This two-bedroom apartment is located on the top floor of a building in the historic center of Spilamberto, a small town between Modena and Bologna in the Emilia Romagna region of Italy. The town is located about 5 kilometers from the Modena Sud exit of the A1 Autostrada and is about a 30-minute drive from the Bologna International Airport (BLQ). This location offers the charm and convenience of being in the center of a small town, yet is centrally located in the region.
Spilamberto has a lively, well preserved historic center with stone streets, covered walkways, an ancient clock tower and fortress. Shops, restaurants, cafes, banks, bakeries, markets and a pharmacy are all conveniently located in town, within easy walking distance of the apartment. There is a weekly market on Wednesday mornings and numerous festivals throughout the year.
There is free parking in the square with no permit required. Although a car is recommended for getting around the region, there are buses to Modena and other cities and towns from Spilamberto. The closest train stations are Castelfranco Emilia and Bazzano, but the Bologna and Modena stations are better served.
The apartment, which measures about 80 square meters, is bright, fully furnished and has everything necessary for a comfortable stay. There are white walls and characteristic flooring throughout the apartment. It has an open living room with a kitchen, a balcony, two bedrooms and a spacious bathroom. The living room has two sets of French-doors that open to the balcony, which overlooks the square and La Rocca Rangoni, an ancient fortress. One of the bedrooms has a queen bed, while the other has two twin beds. The spacious bathroom has a large shower.
Recently renovated (2012), the apartment offers modern comfort and amenities. The modern, fully equipped kitchen has a dishwasher and there is a washing machine and a hair dryer in the bathroom. There is air-conditioning in the living/kitchen and the larger bedroom (with queen bed) and screens on the windows and French-doors. The owner provides a free “internet key” for your laptop or, as an alternative; the city has free Wi-Fi at various points around town. The apartment is on the third floor with no elevator, but the bright rooms and view from the balcony are worth the climb. English (and Italian) speaking owners are available to assist guests if/as needed during their stay.
I'm Italian born (Modena) but lived in the USA (Seattle) for many years. I'm fluent in English and Italian mother tongue. I work in the travel industry and love to travel !!
Sandro Gilioli purchased this apartment in 2011
Walk to everything! Nice experience of small town living in Italy. The southern exposure and light in the living/kitchen area and the nice view from the balcony.
We booked this appartment very last minute, yet everything was perfectly prepared. We received a very warm welcome from Elisa, a friend of the family and were shown a wonderful, spacious, comfortable, very clean appartment. Elisa gave us some very useful tips about the neighbourhood, how to get there, nice restaurants... we spent 4 beautiful days in and around Spilamberto and hope to return one day!
My husband and I stayed in this apartment for almost a month and found it to be very comfortable, practical and well situated. Views of the historical center were beautiful and the people in town were kind. But more importantly, the kitchen, bathroom and bedroom were well stocked with every convenience you could need and the beds were cozy. Sandro went above and beyond to make us feel at home during our stay, even asking if there was anything he could pick up for us at the grocery store before our late-night arrival. I cannot recommend this apartment enough!
My friend and I were given totally wrong information concerning this apartment. We left the U.S. on February 13th, and this was the 6th apartment we booked for our 3 month tour of Europe, and this was the first time we were seriously misled about the location. We did a search for Bologna, Italy, and this apartment came up. It is NOT in Bologna; it is located in the tiny, unremarkable village of Spilamberto. This town is approximately 17 km from Bologna, and has no public transportation. If we had not rented a car ( which the owner never advised us to do), we would have been totally stuck there after a very, very expensive taxi ride from the Bologna train station. There were a few stores and restaurants, but with those exceptions, there was really nothing to do.
We were very disappointed to believe we were going to Bologna when in fact we were not near the city at all. Even if you want a totally quiet trip with nothing to do, please be aware that this apartment is on the fourth floor with no lift, and very unreliable wi-fi service. The Internet went out the second day we were there, and was never restored. Because of this, one of lost $199.00 that was sent in to take a tour in Parma. The departure meeting place was changed the night before the tour, and since there was no internet to find out this information, the bus left without her.
Again...this was a total misrepresentation of the fact that this apartment is not in Bologna, but in Spilamberto, a town that we could not even find on a map. Be warned
Visit the local (in town) Balsamic Vinegar Museum, a small gem, very informative.
Explore famous car/motorcycle maker's brands museums (Ferrari, Lamborghini, Ducati, Maserati and several private collections) located in within no more then 45 minutes drive from the unit.
