About Marianne Buehler

I have lived most of my life near or on the water in Maine. There are many special places to visit and spend time, such as on the Sheepscot River where there is rejuvenating quietude and opportunities to be on the water.

Marianne Buehler purchased this house in 2014

Why Marianne Buehler chose Mount Desert Island

My sons completed building the River Cottage in 2014 as a legacy home for us and travelers to enjoy a special environment surrounded by engaging nature and quietude. The property is central to the areas of Augusta, Rockland, Belfast, and Camden.

What makes this house unique

We are in love with our home because it is immersed in nature with unique vegetation, a natural setting, and opportunities to spend time in and on the water. Wildlife such as deer, beavers, birds, moose, and other critters may be seen in the neighborhood. Relax on the chairs, porch, lawn, or picnic table!

Quiet Winter Retreat

  • 5 of 5

Set in a beautiful location, off the beaten track and yet with all the mod-cons, this cottage wowed us as we opened the door and stepped into the warmth from the cold.

The views from every window were perfect, we watched squirrels climb the leaf-less trees, chunks of ice flow down the river, the sunset over the lake, and sunrise over the woods, and of course, a full moon shining in every window. It was all very breathtaking!

The cottage is ideally located to visit the bigger towns along the coast if one wishes, but offers enough solitude for those, like us, looking to get away from the hubbub.

The owner was extremely friendly and accommodating and we felt right at home.

We hope to have the chance to visit again in the future.

Delightful Cottage In The Woods

  • 5 of 5

My family and I have stayed several times in this delightful cottage in the woods. It's is clean, well stocked, nicely designed and a wonderful place to get away. However, if you want to not stay too far away from sights, you are close to Augusta or the coast. Marianne (the owner) is close by if needed, and attentive to a renters comfort or needs. Highly recommended as a spot to rest, read, explore, create art and slow down from a hectic pace. The porch is THE best spot! Was not interested nor needed internet. Was happy to leave that daily contact behind and get back to nature. The location is gorgeous!

Wonderful Week!

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I just spent one of the most relaxing weeks ever at this cottage. What a beautiful, peaceful setting. We watched the sun rise in the morning over the river and the sun set over the lake. We traveled 2 days to the coast and explored Camden and Rockland. We hiked Camden Hills which is a must see. You can also drive to the top if the hike is too much. The scenery from the top is spectacular. Owls Head lighthouse is worth the trip as well. The highlight of our trip, however, was relaxing at the house. The house is adorable. Very clean and comfortable and completely stocked with everything you would need. We canoed and fished. The foliage was breathtaking. We sat in the chairs by the water and talked. It is so peaceful and quiet, the only sounds heard were the acorns falling from the trees. The owner, Marianne and her son Nate could not have been more accommodating! Thank you! We would highly recommend this home and hope to come back next summer!

Little Cabin in the Woods

  • 3 of 5

A little cabin just right for 2 adults. Beware of your internet use, we were socked with a $215 overage bill at checkout. (Claimed that we used 18 Gigabytes during 3 weeks.) Surprising for us because we did not stream music or videos, just checked email and surfed the web in the evening. We were not given any warnings that we had gone over our allotment. We actually disconnected the modern the last 2 days of our 3 week stay when Marianne told us that we were getting close to the limit. The documentation provided to support this charge looked like a word document. A request for an invoice from the internet provider that showed the property address was ignored. No other entertainment opportunities were given for evenings save 2 decks of cards and a pile of old magazines. The closest town is a 30 minute drive.

The kitchen is fairly well equipped although there is no microwave and only one lid for pots and pans. The fire pit by the river is rusted through in spots and has holes in the bottom. There is no outdoor grill for cooking.

The river is supposed to lead to a lake but two large beaver dams prohibited us from doing more than a 20 minute paddle back and forth on the small stream that runs through the property.

The beds are thin mattresses on slatted frames - no boxsprings. The master bed has a bit thicker mattress but the twins are simply futon mattresses. In addition, and perhaps most important, is that the skylights do not have any shades or covers. Be prepared to wake up during a full moon and when the sun rises early in the morning.

Owner's Response: Response from owner: The renters’ son came to my house in February of this year to give his parents an iphone tour of my cottage. I was also asked many questions from his mother before they booked. The River Cottage is a beautiful home on the banks of the Sheepscot River with an Internet that is expensive due to the currently limited options available. I provide 1 gigabyte per week, Verizon charges by the gigabyte for overages. Renters are informed of this in writing before they arrive. This information is also on my VRBO website. When I greet my guests I reiterate the Internet situation. In this case I was told, “no worries, we will pay whatever the bill is.” I offered to let her know when each gigabyte was used—I was told that the bill would be paid. Adult children also stayed at the cottage (not listed on the contract) and the Internet documentation showed heavy usage at all hours of the day and night. The renters were provided detailed and multiple documentation from Verizon. *The good news is that a better Internet option will be in Somerville soon! Regarding the professional custom-made kitchen amenities, all pots have lids and there is a full spectrum of cooking equipment that renters have appreciated. The fire pit has multiple metal layers and is located directly on the river with comfortable chairs. The river levels below the beaver dam have been affected by drought conditions. My summer renters rallied and enjoyed the challenge of getting around the lower water near the beaver dam. After my renters left the cottage, I scanned the interior. One of the couch’s arm was broken off and all of my nice dish towels had disappeared. I asked the renter to make good on the couch—she told me “it was old and like that when we arrived.“ The contemporary couch is a few years old. If anyone reads my 5 star VRBO or Airbnb reviews, it is obvious that I care about my property and want my guests to be happy and enjoy their stay.

Quiet Riverside Cottage in Maine Woods

  • 5 of 5

Well designed and simply furnished 2 bedroom cottage is perfect for some quiet time. Very complete kitchen allows for easy meal prep and dining. Washer and dryer great for longer stays. Variety of water craft for exploring the river. Fabulous large covered porch with view of the river is perfect for reading, meals or just watching the river. Would love to come back in the fall when the leaves turn. Very clean and all was in good working order, plus Marianne is available and very accommodating with suggestions, directions and a friendly dog. Highly recommended!
