About the property

2 1/2 Acres Of Grass Hills & Large Evergreen Trees Makes A Beautiful Setting.

This loft is a one bedroom, one bathroom, all on one level guest house.Because it's located on the top of the building it provides plenty of light from large windows all around and great views of the surrounding property with narrow views of the Sooke basin. It is very quiet and private. The space below is strictly storage. The kitchen is spacious with all the equipment to prepare and cook all your meals.

The bedroom is large with a king size bed plus an antique wardrobe for your clothing. Huge windows on two walls make this room cheerful and bright. All the windows have venetian blinds to reduce the direct sunlight if you choose.

The loft has central heating with an oil furnace and a propane fire place in the living area for cozy comfort. A large screen TV is in the living area accompanied by cd/dvd player, dock charger and sound/pvr system.

Going down the back steps takes you to a laundry room that auto lights the second you open the door. Totally equipped with washer, dryer, hanging rod, laundry sink and even a toilet.

On the front, very large deck you'll find a BBQ under cover and table with chairs for out door cocktails and dinning. Great views of the property from this deck and glimpses of the basin. Looking directly over the driveway you can see my workshop and studio. In front of the studio are half round benches and a fire pit you're welcome to use when fire regulations permit.

Studio visits are welcomed whenever I'm there or can be booked with a simple phone call almost anytime. If you find a piece of art you would like to buy I can ship it home for you.

Over to the other side of the loft you'll find a pond and picnic spot with a large, although old picnic table. Also there is another picnic table closer to the loft on the grass over looking the hills and evergreens.

About James Roberts

I am a career artist living on this 2 1/2 acre property way up the hill from the guest loft. Born in Alberta and moved to Vancouver Island in 1972. I have moved around a bit; Victoria, Vancouver, Toronto and finally back to East Sooke on the Island.

James Roberts purchased this apartment in 2005

Why James Roberts chose Sooke

This is the second time we've lived here and it's hard to do better any where else. The property is tree'd and green with views and privacy.

What makes this apartment unique

There are three buildings on this land, very unique for the area. It was grandfathered to us this way. Today you can not build that many structures on this size of land. Thus I have an incredible studio, work shop, guest loft and a very attractive modified A-frame for us to live in. The buildings are all post and beam from logs harvested from the land. One would likely never be able to duplicate all this again. The climate is gentle; never to hot or to cold. Fair amount of rain in the winter months but that's why it remains incredibly green all year. Minimum snow fall in the winter months ( if any), almost welcomed for the beauty it creates in contrast to the vivid green. Here you have ocean, forrest and plenty of wildlife yet never more than an 1/2 to an hour from the city for shopping, entertainment and dinning. It's the perfect place for pets of all kinds, Alpacas to kittens, horses to chickens.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Anne And Bill are the kind of guests everyone who rents, hopes for. Clean, tidy and sociable. They had two very well behaved dogs that I rarely heard a sound from and also were a pleasure to be around. We would very much look forward to having them again in the future.

Stunning location, comfortable charming loft

  • 5 of 5

East Sooke has to be one of the loveliest spots on the planet, and the loft is the perfect place to explore it. It's also a great place to just be. Bunnies and deer frolic on the lawn as you prepare dinner in the well-equipped kitchen, or sip coffee on the deck. The deck is sun-drenched for most of the day, but the loft itself stays quite cool. The attention to detail and comfort is superior, and unusual for vacation rentals: e.g. a Villeroy & Bosch crockery set, a writing desk, treated beams, a really good shower, even a dog bed on the deck and a child/dog gate at the top of the stairs. We so appreciated that we could bring our dog. We loved the tour of James's art studio, too. Thanks so much to James and Lynn for everything, and we'll be back for sure.

Owner's Response: Louisa, Virginia and Sofie (puppy) are just the tenants every vacation rental owner hopes to get. Spotlessly clean and respectful of the rental unit and the surrounding property. They were so very quiet we never knew when they came or went. They were such a delight to have we wish they could have stayed longer and we look forward to their return one day soon.

A beautiful vacation spot.

  • 5 of 5

This is a beautiful vacation spot. James is a perfect host. The loft is well equipped and spotless. On cool mornings the fireplace is great, later in the day the deck is drenched in sun and a perfect spot to relax. Great view of the Sooke basin and of course deer are often grazing on the grass near the loft. Wonderful walking trails near by or with a 20 minute drive you can be in Sooke on the other side of the basin walking Whiffin Spit, a narrow 1.5 km strip of land separating Sooke Basin and Juan De Fuca Strait.

This spot is a real gem. Thanks James.

Absolutely Ideal!

  • 5 of 5

Had a fantastic time, was exactly what we were looking for, the loft itself is in a wonderful setting, well taken care off and fully equipped with everything you would need, a true home from home. The host James was fantastic, made himself open and available for any questions or information required but did not at all impeded on your space. East Sooke itself is magnificent area to explore as well.

We definitely will be returning.

Thank you!

Owner's Response: The perfect guests. Showed the utmost respect for the loft and property and left it in perfect condition. Housekeepers delight. They came and went on adventures every day and I hardly knew they were there. Their puppy was well cared for and was absolutely no problem whatsoever. I welcome William and family anytime.

Secluded in Sooke

  • 5 of 5

Pleasantly off the beaten path, this well appointed one bedroom offers everything you need and more - interesting library and art pieces throughout. Comfortable and homey with a location that is a great jumping off point for touring Sooke's sights and places of interest. The loft also has, the Tashi dog seal of approval. Owners are gracious hosts. Looking forward to returning soon.

Great place for a family getaway!

  • 5 of 5

We truly enjoyed our week long holidays at Covey Run. The place was perfect for our family including a toddler and a dog. The owners are very accommodating and installed the safety gate on the deck for us. The location is convenient for exploring the southeast Island. I would recommend this vacation rental and we hope to come back.

Peaceful, with all the comforts of home..

  • 5 of 5

This loft is very well-equipped and has everything you need for a great stay. The king bed is very comfortable. The location is very private and quiet. The owners are great...very friendly, and they ensured that we had everything we needed during our stay. The awesome deck provided a wonderful spot for afternoon cocktails and to review the activities of the day. The washer and dryer came in handy after a successful day of fishing. All in all, a perfect five-star getaway.
