About the property

2 bedroom, 1 1/2 bathroom newly renovated cabin in quiet neighborhood

This newly renovated mountain cabin on a three-quarter acre lot is only 1 mile from downtown Highlands, peaceful yet convenient! Come enjoy the cool breezes of this popular resort— at an elevation of over 4000 feet, with an average high temperature in July of 78 degrees. It’s a welcome refuge from the flatland summer heat and humidity. This wonderful cabin in the secluded Mirror Lake area is also perfect for year-round use, with air conditioning and gas heat.

It features a large great room with a French door opening onto a serene deck surrounded by rhododendrons. In front of the stone fireplace is a cozy sitting area, which is underneath the gem of a loft for sleeping, reading, or working. A custom modern kitchen is handsomely equipped for serious cooks as well as those who just want easy entertaining. The kitchen includes granite counter tops, stainless steel appliances, and a convection range. You can choose to eat in the dining area or on the convenient deck with gas grill.

There are two bedrooms with queen size beds, a full bathroom with a claw foot tub and shower, and a half bath on the main floor. The loft above the great room has a day bed suitable for sitting or sleeping and a desk. Guests can park off the street on the driveway, as well as on the street.

Additional amenities include WiFi, flat screen TV with cable service, and a laundry room with washer and dryer.

About Lisa B. Townsend

We are three sisters, who cherish the cabin that our parents adored. We hope that you will enjoy this wonderful refuge as much as we have! It’s not perfect, it’s not modern, but it IS fun! We live in different areas of the country: near Chapel Hill, NC and outside Boston, MA. As military brats, we grew up all over: NC, NJ, KS, CO, TX, Germany, and GA.

Lisa B. Townsend purchased this cabin in 1974

Why Lisa B. Townsend chose Highlands

Thistle Dew is a lovingly restored cabin that has been in our family for nearly 40 years. After 30+ years in the Army, our dad retired. Our parents moved around constantly and were finally able to return to NC and fix up this cabin to spend the summers. We remember how happy they were, to be in this cool refuge and walk with neighbors nightly down to Mirror Lake or to go golfing with friends. The heat in the coastal plains of NC was (and is!) unbearable, especially as our parents aged. This cabin has been a family refuge for many years—beloved and adored.

What makes this cabin unique

This cabin is perfect for private getaways. Only one mile from downtown, it feels so private and secluded, thanks to the many native rhododendrons and mountain laurels. The deck is perfect for outdoor dining, grilling, and relaxing. The original cabin was built entirely of wormy chestnut (American chestnut trees were mostly destroyed by the chestnut blight in the early 1900s). According to grandchildren of the doctor who sold the house to OUR parents, it was built in the late 1930s. Our recent renovations have attempted to retain that flavor—with nightstands built from the old kitchen table, deck consoles built from the old dining table, and closets utilizing old interior chestnut doors.

Living in a storybook

  • 5 of 5

Beautiful cottage set in a private but not isolated setting very close to Highlands downtown area. The charming cottage has had a beautiful renovation, but kept its historic charm. Having an Old World European style was just the ticket for us. Details included wonderful stemware, everything you could hope for in a pantry (seasonings, zip lock bags, olive oil, toilet paper, paper towels), high quality linens, and gorgeous stainless steel appliances. The attention to detail was evident. We had such a wonderful stay. Our only complaint was that the coffee maker seems to be defunct.

Beautiful place

  • 5 of 5

we had a wonderful time and it was a beautiful cottage. it could not have been more pleasant and comfortable. everything was there and even the little, tiny chipmunk that i named Al. he was peeping out from under the propane tank and squeaking at me. We will be back when we can.

Quaint , beautifully remodeled 1930's cabin.

Loved this cabin for a getaway. A little disappointed that we couldn't use the wood fireplace. Was still a little chilly there .

Cozy cabin near the heart of town

  • 4 of 5

My husband and I really enjoyed our time in the Highlands! This cabin was the perfect retreat. The location was great in relation to Main Street. The bathroom would be a little small if you were sharing it with more than one couple but worked great for us. I would definitely recommend this property to a friend!

Cozy Cabin

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I just spent three nights at Thistle Dew and had a wonderful stay at this warm and cozy cabin. The very clean cabin is recently remodeled with all amenities and is nicely decorated. Just a short walk to downtown Highlands and in a beautiful wilderness setting. Definitely a cabin we will want to visit again.

Highlands, NC, is a wonderfully cool mountain resort, with nearby gem mining, zip line parks, numerous waterfalls, hiking trails, local auction houses, craft stores, and antique stores. Plus, lots of shopping!

Have you ever been to an antique auction? It’s an event to be experienced. Dry Falls and Glen Falls must be seen, as well as Sunset Rock—all well worth the hike! The Great Smoky Mountain Railroad is especially wonderful for children (my kids LOVED the ice cream stop!). Asheville is a mere 85 miles away, the site of the Thomas Wolfe house, Craft Fair of the Southern Highlands, some 18 craft breweries, and many more award winning restaurants.
