About the property

3 bedroom, 2 bath, 2000 square foot mountain home

Red Fox House

This house sits at over 11,000 feet in elevation on one acre in Valley of the Sun with a beautiful view of the sunrise and Pikes Peak in the distance. The secluded location is a perfect place to relax, yet it is within 15 minutes of both Alma and Fairplay in Park County. Breckenridge ski area and the many shops, restaurants and hiking/biking trails it offers is only 25 minutes away over scenic Hoosier Pass.

The home has an open concept kitchen, living room and dining room with a large deck on the upper floor. There are two bedrooms and one bath on this level. One bedroom has a queen bed and the other has two twin beds. The lower level is a walkout with large windows open to the east and lots of light. There is a large living area, bedroom, and bath with large shower on the lower level. The bedroom has a king size bed and there is a day bed with trundle in the living area. No bunk beds here.

Amenities in the home include a well equipped kitchen, gas fireplace, telephone with free US and Canada long-distance service, wireless internet connection and a detached, oversize 2-car garage. There is Direct TV service with DVR connected to the TV in the living room and one bedroom on the upper level. The lower level living area has a TV ready for watching VHS tapes or DVDs. The home is heated with a forced air gas furnace plus electric baseboard heat in the lower level to keep you toasty warm.

Park, Summit and Chaffee Counties offer a wide variety of outdoor activities just minutes from the house including skiing, snowboarding, cross-county skiing, snow shoeing, sledding, tubing, ice climbing, camping, hiking, fishing, hunting, white water rafting, golf, mountain biking, mountain climbing, 4-wheel and ATV trails. There are several fourteen thousand foot peaks to climb an easy drive from this location including four near Alma and Fairplay. The town of Fairplay has a recreation center, skate board park and BMX track. The National Forest Service office in Fairplay can also help to point you in the right direction for many of the available activities in the area.

This central location give you easy access to the many outdoor activities Colorado has to offer. During your stay you may even be visited by moose, elk, red fox, rabbits, various squirrels and chipmunks. But if you long for the city lights, Denver is only a two hour drive away.

A 4-wheel drive vehicle is recommended for winter travel since the home is at over 11,000 feet and has a steep driveway. The driveway is plowed during the winter months but may still be icy or snow packed. Please be aware that high altitude sickness can occur at this altitude if you or your guests are not properly acclimated. This is alpine living and even in the summer the nights are quite chilly so pack accordingly.

 Alma – Lincoln Falls (ice climbing), Mosquito Pass (4 wheeling) – 15 minutes N

About Paula Scanland

Born in Indiana I moved to Colorado in 1968 and fell in love with the beautiful mountains. I simply had to stay and enjoy all they had to offer. Work kept me in the Denver area until 2006 when I finally purchased this home and moved to the mountains full time.

Paula Scanland purchased this cabin in 2006

Why Paula Scanland chose Fairplay

This beautiful mountain location is too wonderful not to share.

True Mountain House!

  • 5 of 5

We Are Glad We Picked This House, Many Choices But The Owner Is On Top Of Everything, She Does Care About Her House And The People

Who Come To Visit, She Was Very Helpful ----WE ARE SORRY IF WE DROVE HER CRAZY !!! We Called Her A lot, Like A lot ! But She Was Totally Sweet About it, Very Cool About Dealing With Different People On The Phone. The House Is Lovely, My Friends Got To See Some Bears Resting On Each Other Like Hugging Each Other, Even The Bears Were Enjoying The Cabin, There Were Moose (Moose Was Bathing In Pond) , Hundreds Of Elks, Wild Turkeys, Skunks (Babies!), Foxes, Huge

Jack Rabbits (A Couple Of Them Chasing Our Truck, Trying To Race It!), Blue Js, Deers, Chipmunks, Porcupines, Dogs (Friendly), Horses, Lots Of Wild Animals But Very Few People (GOOD THING). The Cabin Has Everything, I'm A Professional Chef ( Briar Rose & Ritz Carlton Spago) And I Didn't Have A Problem Finding Good Tools To Cook Gourmet Dishes. We Had Great Laughs, I Hope Paula Did too, We Would Love To Have You For Dinner When Our Home Is Build, Thank You For Everything, We Can't Wait To Do It Again.!!

Owner's Response: Thanks for all the kind words. You did not drive me crazy at all. You were great guests! I am happy you had such a great experience. The wildlife in the area really gave you quite a show. It seems like all you missed seeing was a mountain lion. Maybe next time! I would love to come for dinner. Let me know when your house is complete and ring the dinner bell. I'll be there.

Peaceful Place

  • 4 of 5

This is a great home on mountain property. The views are amazing! Very peaceful. Fairly close to town if you needed anything. We enjoyed our stay, but did not take full advantage of the mountains or fire pit due to weather.

We had a wonderful time at Red Fox House. Very relaxing after spending the days exploring the area.

  • 4 of 5

This place is big enough that everyone could have their own space at the end of the day and small enough that you don't lose each other. The view from the huge deck is beautiful. You can see a lake shimmering through the trees of an evening. Morning coffee out there is a great, serene way to start the day. The owner was easy to communicate with and had everything ready for a relaxing week in the mountains.

Quiet, Clean, Comfortable

  • 5 of 5

My family and I had a wonderful vacation in Colorado and coming home to this lovely cabin in the woods was the perfect way to end our day of traveling. It was very clean, with a well-stocked kitchen, tons of board games, blankets to stay cozy in the chilly evenings and amazing views from the deck.

We did have to drive on gravel roads to get there, but it was worth it for the views and seclusion and we even spotted an elk along the meandering route, which was a highlight for us!

The cabin is located near Fairplay and although it is a small town, we spent several hours going through the South Park City/Museum (highly recommend!), played bumper ball, ate lunch at the Park Bar, bought chocolate and ice cream, ate supper at the brewery and picked up groceries at Prathers.

We had a great vacation and this cabin was just the icing on the cake for our family. We would definitely recommend it to others and are beginning plans for our trip next year!

Nice cabin.

  • 5 of 5

This is a very nice and well maintained property.

A bit far from Breck and could easily become a 1-1.5hr drive if any snow on the road.

CR1 is poorly maintained by the county so you have to be really careful there as well. I cant believe they don't ever sprinkle some gravel or sand at all.

Water level is pretty low during the winter months, we were told. So if you have 6-7 adults, you will most likely run out of water from time to time.

Views are awesome and this cabin is probably great in the summer.

Thanks.

Owner's Response: Thank you for the kind words about the house and for sharing your experiences. Hoosier Pass is open between Fairplay and Beckenridge all year, and the road is paved, but there are hairpin turns and it can be slow going when it's icy that's for sure. County Road 1 up to the house is a dirt road that spends the entire winter under packed snow. The county uses a road grader to clear the snow, but it gets icy in the shaded parts. At least an AWD vehicle is recommended, but even with that, if the curves are taken too fast you will find yourself mired in the deep snow piled in the ditch. Even the most seasoned residents make that mistake from time to time. We all help dig each other out with good-natured ribbing when it does. Since the house is on a well and septic tank, it is rural living at its finest. Very little snow melts at over 11,000 feet during the winter months so water conservation measures are very important to stretch the available water in the well as far as possible. Thank you for coming and for your comments.
