About the property

Near the Santa Rosa Golf & Country Club. Two bedrooms, 1 and 1/2 baths.

Sunset House is a 2 bedroom, 1,800 square foot house in the Russian River Valley AVA.

It sits on nearly 1/2 acre in a semi-rural setting in the Santa Rosa Golf & Country Club subdivision; right off Occidental Road and minutes from downtown Sebastopol and Santa Rosa, Highways 12 and 101.

Vast western sky views paint a different portrait every night as the sun goes down over mountains that grace the Pacific coastline. Sometimes a soft watercolor. Sometimes the bold, thick colors of oil on canvas.

Inside you’ll find unique and inviting open-plan architecture - a balance between public and private spaces. Where arching beams, cathedral ceilings, and golden skylights enfold a mixture of Family Furnishings, Asian Antiques, and Original Art reflective of life in Northern California. The large Great Room provides a comfy gathering place.

During the day, enjoy a meal on the Patio or in the Great Room, overlooking the lush rolling grass and trees that dot the golf course. Listen for and watch the hummingbirds who dine at Sunset House feeders year-round.

As dusk turns to night, listen to Great Horned and Barn owls as darkness deepens under a star-studded sky and the air grows crisp among oak, redwood and cypress trees.

Sunset House is steps away from vineyards and farms, ranches and forests, historic towns and cities with many specialty shops carrying irresistible, locally made food, wine, beer, cider, and incredible art.

With easy access to Highways 12, 116 and 101, it is an ideal spot from which to see what the region has to offer. San Francisco is an hour's drive south down Highway 101, with many interesting stops along the way, including Petaluma, Tiburon, Sausalito, Muir Woods, Stinson Beach and Mill Valley. Kayaks and canoes can be rented at the Monte Rio beach on the Russian River during the summer months. Or take the scenic drive to Bodega Bay. Enjoy its good seafood restaurants, and see where Alfred Hitchcock's 'The Birds' was filmed.

An ideal location for those attending events at the private Santa Rosa Golf and Country Club -- weddings, parties, and tournaments.

“This is the chosen spot of all the earth as far as nature is concerned” wrote Luther Burbank.

Come see why. Come to Sunset House.

About Anne Gray

This is a photo of a female Anna's hummingbird according to Tim Stewart of Wild Birds Unlimited, Santa Rosa.

Anne Gray purchased this house in 1988

Why Anne Gray chose Sonoma County

Sunset House sits on nearly 1/2 acre overlooking the lush greenery, oaks and cypress trees of the Santa Rosa Golf & Country Club surrounded by farms and vineyards. It is an ideal spot for those attending events at the Santa Rosa Golf & Country Club, and for touring the wine country, the Russian River or simply to relax, unwind and regenerate.

What makes this house unique

Stunning western views day and night.

Inspiring open plan architecture with arching beams and cathedral ceilings.

Family furnishings, local art, and antiques.

Centrally located for wine country exploration.

Private and peaceful -- situated on nearly 1/2 acre.

Near the private Santa Rosa Golf & Country Club; the perfect place to stay when attending club events.

Well-tended gardens full of roses and other perennials. They include David Austin's Abraham Darby, Tamora, and Benjamin Britten, in addition to About Face, Distant Drums, Julia Child, Pope John Paul, Marilyn Monroe,

Barbra Streisand, Queen Elizabeth and Hot Cocoa.

Home to hummingbirds year-round who dine at Sunset House feeders. According to Tim Stewart from Wild Birds Unlimited in Santa Rosa, they are most likely 'Anna's Hummingbirds and from their coloring the two photos on this listing indicate that they are female Anna's. Anna's hummingbirds are not migratory, so they live here year-round. When you get familiar with their chirp you will hear them in the trees when feeding time nears. If you are quiet, don't move and are lucky, you will see them feed. They can be a few feet away from you, suspended in mid-air by the fast beating of wings and are facinating to watch.

Sunset House

  • 5 of 5

Our 6 night stay at the Sunset House was absolutely wonderful. The house is so cute and very comfortable. It was so neat and clean. The house was set in a beautiful and quiet neighborhood. I loved sitting on the porch overlooking a golf course and watching all the hummingbirds play. We enjoyed walking through the neighborhood seeing the many farms, beautiful homes and vineyards. The owner was great to work with and provided information about where to go and what to do. We can't wait to go back!

Owner's Response: We do our best to make every guest feel special and create a wonderful experience for those visiting Sonoma County. This includes keeping the place as spotless as we can, and fully equipped. The Patio, Kitchen and Great Room are ideal places to view the garden and golf course greenery, sunsets, and our other "tenants" - the Annabelle Hummingbirds. Sunset House is a quiet semi-rural retreat, within walking distance to vineyards, Laguna de Santa Rosa walking trails, and key roads to the Russian River, wineries, Healdsburg, Sebastopol, Occidential, the Sonoma Coastline, and all that Santa Rosa itself has to offer. Thank you for your five star review! Please stay with us again. Anne.

Sunset House

  • 5 of 5

Sunset house is a beautiful, quiet retreat. It is set in a quiet neighborhood where you can enjoy walking and getting away from it all. The artwork and furnishings inside are beautiful. The back patio is comfortable and the garden is very well kept. There is plenty of seating to enjoy hummingbirds, squirrels, and other birds outside. It was immaculate inside and very well kept. The owner is very responsive to your requests and will help you with any questions you have. I would highly recommend this property to friends, family or anyone looking for a great place. I plan to return with my own friends and family when I can.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your wonderful review! We do whatever we can to ensure our guests have a memorable experience at Sunset House. The large patio overlooking the garden and golf course greenery is a favorite spot to watch hummingbirds and sunsets. Most of the interior furnishings and artwork have been in our family for a long time and we enjoy sharing this feature with our cherished guests. Hurry back!

This is a great place to stay while in Sonoma. It is in a quiet neighborhood overlooking the golf course with a nice view, plenty of room to stretch out and Anne and Laurie have thought of everything to make your stay comfortable. Easy access (short drive) to great wineries, restaurants, Sebastopol, Santa Rosa, roughly 20 ish minutes to Healdsburg. Loved it- hopefully we will be back.

Owner's Response: We're so glad your family enjoyed Sunset House. The large, covered Patio is a favorite spot with its private and quiet western view over golf course greenery. And with over 1,800 square feet, cathedral ceilings, an open floor plan and both a Living Room and Great Room, there is ample room to relax. Sunset House has is fully equipped with the basics one needs, especially in the kitchen. We also added important things that were missing from our own VRBO and B&B experiences. Yes, we have tried to think of everything! Laurie and I take great pride in providing our guests with the best experience possible. Vacations aren't cheap and we all get too few of them. We also do this because of our passion for Sunset House and Sonoma County. And the money we take in is greatly appreciated. Thank you for letting us host your visit. Anne

Clean, beautiful patio, great kitchen to cook meals. Very restful.

  • 5 of 5

We had an outstanding time at Sunset House. It was very clean, had all the cooking supplies that you would need and it is perfectly located.

Our stayed with a beautiful sunset and the next morning we took a wonderful walk in the neighborhood. We live in the Central Valley, so waking up to a chilly morning was incredible.

We tell my friends if they a little getaway I know a great place to stay!

Thank you again Anne,

Owner's Response: I am so glad you had the chance to enjoy the western sunset overlooking the sprawling greenery of the golf course from the patio; and walk around our lovely neighborhood which sits in a semi-rural area surrounded by vineyards, dairy and horse farms. Sunset House has a fully equiped kitchen so its easy to cook or BBQ. It's a perfect spot to call "home" for a few days of relaxing and enjoying all that Sonoma County and it's coastline has to offer. With easy access to Highways 101 and 12, Downtown Santa Rosa, Sebastopol, and other lovely nearby towns its location is a definite "plus". Thank you so much for your booking and 5 star review!

Very nice and comfortable property - great location

We enjoyed our stay and are going back for another one. Nice and quiet, attractive neighborhood. You have the entire house, so it's as if you live there while you are there. The only extra noise you hear is the occasional beating of the wings of the hummingbirds.

Owner's Response: Thank you for the wonderful five star review. We enjoyed having your family as our guests and look forward to your return. Sunset House is in a lovely neighborhood where the houses are on large lots and it's peaceful and quiet, yet centrally located and surrounded by vineyards. The Anna's hummingbirds are amazing to watch, as are the lovely western sunsets. With two bedrooms and 1,800 square feet it's perfect for up to four guests. We appreciate your second booking greatly!

Respite from real life!

  • 5 of 5

This was our second visit to the area, having visited one year prior for the same local race and some fun. We had previously stayed in a hotel but decided to try the local rentals. Of course we poured over a large amount of rentals and this one stuck out to us due the location and pictures. I must say, it was an absolutely perfect choice! The owner gave great communication throughout and all instructions were clear and helpful. Upon arrival, we were impressed with the curb appeal, privacy, and peacefulness. When we entered the home, again, we were impressed with how beautiful the home is and how well maintained it is. We were also greeted with freshly cut roses from the garden in the back as well as a wonderful basket filled with fruit, candy, bread, etc. It was truly welcoming and made us feel right at home. Having stayed at a number of rental homes through VRBO, I loved that this home allows you to leave whatever groceries or supplies you have bought while there instead of just throwing away everything. In my opinion, this allows new guests the opportunity to have access to things like water or whatever upon arrival instead of running right out to get items as well as not being wasteful of perfectly good items. Love this! The home itself, well let me just say, the pictures, although lovely, simply don't do justice to the actual home. All amenities we could need were there including towels, toiletries, linens, etc. The beds were comfortable and each room was inviting. I had a tiny bit of concern about no central air being from south Texas but I needn't have worried. We followed the instructions of opening the windows in the evening around 6 or so and utilized the provided fans and found ourselves chilly at night and in the mornings and quite comfortable during the day with everything closed up. Although I must admit to not spending a lot of time in the home during the day since there were so many activities to do nearby including the numerous wineries. It was nice to return after a day of activity and find ourselves in such a comfortable and peaceful environment without the hustle and bustle of a hotel or any exterior noise to disturb us. Although it seems to sit in its own little oasis, it is like 5 miles from the 101 with easy access to all of the activities. We enjoyed the back patio. The hummingbird feeder, view, flowers, and fresh tomatoes were a bonus. Love this place! You can't go wrong staying here! I recommended it highly!

Owner's Response: Thank you for such a stunning five star review! We are so flattered that you picked Sunset House after comparing it against so many options. Your review encompasses so much of what we strive to provide our guests. Laurie is an artist who has a gift for flower arranging. As long as there are fresh flowers in the garden, especially roses and fuchsias, she leaves beautiful bouquets. Lovely welcome baskets too. We haven't had much luck with our tomatoes but are glad you found some. We grow them for our guests. The property has about 50 rose bushes, including some of my favorite fragrant David Austin English roses and hybrid teas like Pristine, Distant Drums, About Face, Hot Chocolate and Queen Elizabeth. Like so many homes in Sonoma County, Sunset House was built to be cooled by the breezes that roll in from the Pacific Ocean early in the morning and evening when temperatures typically drop dramatically. We also have an automatic air circulation system that you may not have noticed. It too brings the cool air in and takes the hot air out during these times. With the central yet semi-rural wine country location and private, peaceful setting, Sunset House has a lot to offer.

Access to Laguna de Santa Rosa walking trails is nearby. Or you can start a great bike ride right from the house. If you want to do some mall shopping try Santa Rosa Plaza. Macy's and Sear's are located there along with a wide array of smaller stores and a Food Court (try a 'Hot Dog on a Stick' with fresh lemonade and you'll be hooked!). Oliver's Market is ideal for groceries, hot meals, it's salad bar and excellent produce, meats, breads and other local items. Try their Gravenstein Applesauce and Juice and pay tribute to the area's heritage as 'apple country', where flavorful Gravenstein Apples reigned before vineyards became prominent. I love Oliver's! 'Cheap eats' -- my favorite is Mombo Pizza on Hwy 116. It's near Pacific Market and Sebastopol Hardware, the best hardware store I know! Try their Greek Pizza adorned with artichoke hearts, olives and feta cheese or their basic cheese pizza which is awesome value. And don't forget to tip the hard-working, friendly staff.
