Coronado’s Beach was recently rated as the best beach in America, and the number one family beach in America. Soft clean sand provides a beachfront oasis for the world famous Hotel Del Coronado, enjoyed by celebrities and US Presidents since the days of Howard Taft and Teddy Roosevelt, including the author of the Wizard of OZ, the Price of Wales and those who found that “Some Like It Hot!” The film was shot at the Del and rated by the AFI as the best comedy ever made. Such high praise for the Del and the Beach have come not only because of the beach itself, but because of the numerous water related activities available within a short distance. Coronado itself boasts two olympic size swimming pools, numerous tennis courts, a golf course rated as the best value in America and two live theater venues. With over 70 places to relax and have something to eat inside the city limits, from sumptuous to simple, from the now world famous Coronado Brew Co to McPees the Navy Seals hangout frequented by Prince Harry when he was in town, Coronado boasts a friendly atmosphere and a delightful climate year round to sit back and enjoy or let it all hang out on the waves of the Pacific.
Our house is situated away from most of the busy parts of Coronado but close enough to enjoy a walk to town to catch a movie in the newly renovated Village Theater and a quick burger at Burger Lounge or an exquisite meal at Primavera with one of the best wine lists in San Diego. Slip on over to Tent City for a quick and delicious salad and check out the Historical Museum where you can read and see the story of the birth of US Naval Aviation. A block away is Lamb’s Theater where live performances of major national productions can be enjoyed is a small intimate setting with not a bad seat in the house.
Our house is also situated close to San Diego Bay where you can catch the sailing regattas every Wednesday late afternoon known as the “Beer Can Races” named for the prize of an empty beer can to the winner of over 15 different classes of sail boat races. San Diego was the site of the America’s Cup, the most famous sailing regatta in the world. Watch the laziness of the boats on Bay pass by from waterfront restaurants such as the famous Peohe’s, or Candelas where happy hour in the bar lasts from 11am to 11pm, or Il Fornaio’s to enjoy the finest Italian antipasti and vino on the water. And when your day is done at whatever hour you can still spend an evening walk home, 10 minutes from the restaurants on the Bay or 20 minutes from the Del on the other side of town. Then it’s just settle in to watch a movie on HBO, Showtime, Starz, or catch your favorite series on Apple TV. But listen, because if you hear the fireworks going off, just press pause and go up to the top deck to watch the show.
The best part is you get to repeat as often as necessary the very next day, or the next, or the next. Or change your routine and head over to the San Diego Zoo less than 10 minutes away, or Sea World inside 20 minutes. Or take the ferry to San Diego to see the USS Midway, a carrier museum with close up views of the Navy jets and helicopters that were used in Vietnam, Korea, the Gulf and other conflicts, or the Star of India, the merchant vessel from the 19th century, or the replica of the San Salvador, the ship sailed by Juan Cabrillo when he entered San Diego Bay in the 16th century. While at the Embarcadero enjoy a delicious array of fish entrees at Anthony’s Fish Grotto, The Fish Market or walk across the street for steak at Ruth’s Chris. Or take the kids to the brand new water garden park near the County Administration Bldg.
With no shortage of things to do (or not) in Coronado, it is just five miles across the bridge to downtown San Diego, the Gaslamp Quarter or Petco Park, home of the San Diego Padres.
Our house provides a central location for a great vacation experience.
