Why Janet Weinstein chose Windham
We have vacationed in Maine for most of the last 30 years. We rented this house in the summer of 2013 and fell in love with it! The setting on the lake, the peace and quiet, yet so close to Portland and the coast are a hard-to-beat combination. And we fell in love with the house itself. We have renovated a lot of properties and recognized the great workmanship and quality of materials used in this house.
What makes this House unique
The wall of windows in the living room/dining room area just brings the lake inside. On a visit in October it was breathtaking! Being so close to the water allows such easy access to the house and dock. If you forget something, it's no big deal to go back and get it. And the mini-refrigerator on the lower level is such an added bonus. When we are there we keep it full of water bottles--no need to traipse through the whole house to refill. It's an easy in and out from the dock. As past renters, we have tried to think of the "little things" that make a rental special and convenient. For that reason, we provide sheets and towels, basic bathroom products (shampoo, conditioner, soap, tissues, etc.), kitchen basics (salt, pepper, mustard, ketchup, flour, napkins, paper towels, dish soap), laundry detergent, etc.

A truly serene place
Pictures were accurate. Enjoyed the location
Great Vacation on Little Duck Pond
Overall, the cottage was the perfect lakefront property. We enjoyed all the amenities from the fireplace to the dock to the kayaks and canoe. The upper deck was the ideal location to view the peaceful pond throughout the day. The sunsets were particularly beautiful. We also enjoyed the outdoor living space along with a large outdoor table, gas grill and hammock. There were a couple of times uninvited mosquitos came to visit. ;-) The cottage easily accommodated our large family of 6 adults and 9-month-old baby. BTW A pack and play crib was provided. Nice option. We stayed at the cottage for a week and made many side trips to Portland. We took a cruise on Casco Bay, went to the Portland Art Museum and enjoyed the local cuisine (Portland Lobster, The Highroller Lobster Co. and Lobster Shack at Two Lights). Also, we visited a variety of microbreweries such as Shipyard, Allagash, and The Lone Pine. On our one rainy day, we went to L.L. Bean to snag some sales and then ate at James Tavern (i.e., eat more lobster and clams). For shopping convenience, Windham is close by and provided lots of options for grocery shopping such as Shaws and Hannaford. There is one caution when going in and out of the cottage. The road is particularly bumping on the paved portions. No issue on our end as we had an SUV. Before and during our stay, the property manager was available and very helpful in providing a variety of information. We were all very sad to leave and would love to return. :-)
Went up for a Bachelor Party, the location was amazing. House was everything we expected and more.
Nice weekend getaway
Overall we had a great time; the place was clean and fit us all comfortably. The area is beautiful if you like the outdoors. We had a slight issue checking in as a key was not left initially for us to lock up. Other than that I would recommend the place for anyone who enjoys relaxing in the outdoors
Family visit st little duck pond
We had a wonderful time staying at little duck pond. The house was clean and as shown in photos. Thanks for a great visit with our new little one!
So glad you had a good time.
Complete serenity, yet so close to Portland
This home was everything we had hoped and MORE! Don't be fooled by the location so close to Portland, this property is IN the woods of Maine. You travel down a long dirt road (glad we arrived at daylight), to find not a "camp", but a true HOME on the pond. The house is fully stocked with all that you need and clean, clean, clean! I always worry about basement living quarters when renting, but the basement is full daylight and with absolutely zero "basement" feel (no must, no bugs, totally clean!). The property manager, Pam, was laid back, and welcoming, yet not intrusive. We felt fortunate that our stay was pre-season, as we basically had the pond to ourselves. Talk about serenity! Love listening to the wind and birds, and even got an amazing thunderstorm one night. The screened porch was lovely. I had expected tons of black flies, but didn't have any. We used the kayaks during our stay and enjoyed the complete quiet in the Adirondack chairs at the end of the dock. We also took a few trips into Portland for wonderful meals and shopping. An easy 15-20 minutes to the heart of the Old Port. This trip it was just my husband and me for a quick get-away, but we discussed visiting again with our son and possibly another couple. Our few days was NOT long enough. We'll be back!!
The house would be wonderful for a family with school-aged children. The upstairs king master would allow for adult space, and then the full bed and twin room are on the basement level with a full living room (where the only TV is) and bathroom. Could easily accommodate the "max capacity". One note: due to the stairs and natural setting, I would be concerned about a toddler/early walker in the space. Overall, wonderful spot and so appreciate that these owners willing to share their paradise with the rest of us! THANK YOU!
When at the lake house you feel secluded and in the woods, yet Portland and all it has to offer (great restaurants, art museum, ferry trips, whale-watching, shopping) is less than 30 minutes away. There is a fun center with mini-golf and zip-lining 15 mins from the house. The beaches, light houses, and state parks of the Maine coast are a short drive as well. LL Bean and the Freeport outlets are an easy drive.
