Located just a three block stroll from the WNMU campus on the Northern edge of town (and next to our other vacation rental: Casa Serena)...this roomy, light filled one bedroom, one bathroom vacation home feels like a 'sky house' and was the inspiration for the Spanish name 'Casa Cielo'. Perched on a ridge with great views out to the New Mexico high- country, this quiet neighborhood on the edge of town offers the convenience of 'in town' living with the feel of a mountain retreat. Native plantings surround it and a driveway loops up and around it with an off-street parking. Designed by its architect/owner in the mid-fifties, the simple and efficient plan includes a masonry fireplace with a built in convection heater for winter comfort in the generous living room. The large bedroom is provided with ample built-in storage. A well-lit 'galley' type kitchen is flanked by a separate dining room on one side and a large laundry/craft room on the other.
Casa Cielo is provided with the following amenities:
ONE BEDROOM...provided with a comfortable queen size bed, desk, love seat and ample built in storage for clothes and 'gear'.

We are native Californians smitten by Southern New Mexico and its timeless beauty, history and magic...also its uncanny similarity to parts of California 'Gold Country' and other great places we have lived in or visited. We left California after selling our interest in TEKA-ILLUMINATION', an outdoor lighting manufacturing company in Templeton near San Luis Obispo. We can be found during the day at 'TATIANA MARIA GALLERY and lighting' in our 1884 building on Bullard street in the Historic District of old town Silver City. Tatiana started this business from a porch sale in Rosendale, NY...then known as 'MIDTOWN ANTIQUES'.
Tatiana Kurakin and Jim Druffel purchased this cottage in 2001
After acquiring our 1940's adobe on Mississippi in the late nineties... and then our vacation rental next to it (Casa Serena), we were offered to opportunity to purchase Casa Cielo, a great little home next to our existing properties that we had always admired and now makes a wonderful 'compound' of classic Silver City homes with wonderful native plantings that can only evolve with time and nurturing.
Before us, Casa Cielo was owned by a dear neighbor that gave us first shot at buying her place before moving out of state. We visited her several times and always enjoyed the sense of being above the surrounding homes and concealed by the oaks, junipers and natural plantings just outside the windows. It is unusual to find such a secluded setting with great mountain and city views, near to town and the WNMU campus...and unusual to find a small well-lit, well designed home that feels like a well appointed tree-house...that is what Casa Cielo is all about.
The house was so cozy and the windows had incredible views. We were in town for the bike race and this place was comfortable and perfect for me and my boyfriend while relaxing between races. I can't wait to come to come back next year!
We have just returned from a two week stay at Casa Cielo. Everything was clean and in good working order. The description of the property was accurate. We very much enjoyed the mid century modern efficiency of the cottage. So well thought out in the floor plan and total design. The views and natural lighting were a huge plus for us. If you love to hike, as we do, this will be a perfect location for you. Silver City is surrounded by trails both easy and challenging. Boston Hill, Gomez Peak, The CDT, Mineral Springs, Ft. Bayard, Cherry Creek and Tadpole just to name a few. This part of New Mexico is also rich in history and art. Everyone is friendly and you can't go wrong with having Tatiana and Jim as your hosts. We will definately be back for a longer stay next time.
At a 6000 ft. elevation, Silver City has pleasant high desert summers... rarely hitting the triple digits that our low desert neighbors see for weeks at a time. Expect refreshing 'monsoon' rains in mid to late summer with plenty of sunshine... and nights that are always cool throughout the summer. Winters are mild with occasional snows that melt quickly in the strong sunlight from clear blue New Mexico skies. Located at the Southern end of the Continental Divide high country, a quick trip to the North gets you up into the Spruce, Fir and Ponderosa pine high country...head South and you're in rolling grass-lands and cattle country... complete with 'real deal' working cattle ranches. We are an outdoor enthusiasts paradise with the Gila National Forrest to explore, including the Gila Cliff Dwellings and the Gila River (the last free flowing one in New Mexico). The Glenwood 'Catwalk' is a favorite day trip... and for hikes around town there is the 'Boston Hill' trail system. The historic WNMU campus is a fun evening stroll (don't miss their Mimbres pottery collection at the campus museum) ...and for a great day hike, try the Gomez peak trail at the end of Little Walnut road. Local wines can be tasted at Esperanza Winery in a beautiful Mimbres Valley setting...and a one hour trip to Deming will take you to two great wineries: Luna Rosa and Saint Clair. Another Deming favorite of ours in 'Diaz Produce' near the intersection of Hwy. 26 and Hwy 180...a real working farm with great watermellons and at harvest time is awash with the smell of barrel roasted chilli peppers. Get a copy of 'Hiking the Gila' to plan your hikes and browse events and activities in our area.
