Overview

About the property

8 bed/3.5 bath Queen Anne Victorian estate on 1.5 acres - IN THE CITY

The perfect venue for a family gathering, wedding, reunion or any festive Atlanta occasion! This lovingly restored, Queen Anne Victorian sits on over an acre in the heart of ATL's trendy Kirkwood neighborhood. THE quintessential classic southern home. A breathtaking and fully-appointed grand mansion in the city limits! The house has huge scale in every way, making it a fantastic meeting point for a large family holiday get-together or friend's reunion.

With nearly 7,000 square feet of interior space, a massive wrap-around front porch, back deck and all the yard a kid can run in, there is plenty of room for the whole extended family, company team-building retreat, or just plain old enriching experience.

This house is located on the premier street of Atlanta's trendy, historic Kirkwood neighborhood, the 2013 winner of the Curbed Cup City's Best Neighborhood honor. When it comes to getting everyone together for a formal sit down, this amazing home features a world-class chef's kitchen with a farm table seating 8 as well as an adjacent banquet-sized formal dining room with a 10' long mahogany table, original stained glass window and an exquisite crystal chandelier. The kitchen windows overlook the back deck, patio (complete with Weber gas grill and Big Green Egg) and over an acre of private and enclosed pecan grove.

Every year when we would visit my in-laws, or go up north to visit my parents we have to cram awkwardly into an under-sized space or stay in a sterile hotel, away from the people we traveled hours to be with. This does *not* need to be your memory! There are but a very small handful of properties that offer such an amazing blend of historic charm, generous interior space and appointments, expansive exterior space and proximity to all of the attractions and conveniences of the great city of Atlanta!

The property is also regularly used for large events and parties, and makes for a fantastic wedding venue. Contact me for event rates, photos from previous formal occasions and more information.

Every effort is made to ensure the home is ready for our guests. We intend to interact with guests minimally, however we look forward to personally greeting visitors upon check-in and offering a quick tour of the space to help familiarize guests with their new temporary home. There is a comprehensive 'how-to'/instructions guide to further assist you. We try to remain reachable by cell phone as much as is feasible as well. When the space will be used for weddings and larger events, I play an active role in the facilitation of logistics.

Kirkwood has a little something for everyone! Having lived here for close to 10 years, we have enjoyed watching the neighborhood evolve into a very trendy in-town spot. There is incredible access to dozens of great restaurants, down town Decatur, and naturally all the sights and destinations of the city of Atlanta. Kirkwood is an extremely walkable neighborhood with charming turn-of-the-century homes on tree-lined streets. From this grand home you can reach MARTA, city parks, restaurants, shops and art galleries all within a 5-10 minute walk. An afternoon escape to a movie theater or museum is a five or ten minute cab ride away so you will never feel like you are isolated in the suburbs (or beyond!).

When it comes to flying in or out, the convenience of this location is hard to beat, Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport is less than a 20 minute drive with moderate traffic. The property has lot's of on and off street parking and due to it's very central location, accessing all the city's major freeways and surface streets is done with ease. The East Lake MARTA rail station is less than a mile from the property. This is also a very bicycle-friendly part of town and because the neighborhood dates back to the 19th century there are sidewalks on just about every street.

Other Things to Note

Unlike most older homes, this house was very carefully sealed and insulated and set up with state-of-the-art heating and cooling and plumbing. Translation: indoor air quality is very good, the heating and cooling systems are robust and can maintain a very comfortable temperature in all but the most extreme circumstances. Hot water is 'instant-on' at every fixture, with great pressure. The home has free wi-fi, things like that..

While it is our goal to provide our guests with the utmost of quiet and privacy, The Howard House is an actively managed estate. It is therefore not uncommon for the property owner or maintenance staff to use the driveway for ingress and egress.

About Jake Plancon

I am a single father of two amazing young boys, a seasoned real estate broker, landlord, entrepreneur and a big fan of classic cars, live music, and most of all travel! I genuinely enjoy meeting new people and entertaining friends and family has been a passion for most of my life.

Jake Plancon purchased this estate in 2005

Why Jake Plancon chose Atlanta

I stumbled upon this formerly dilapidated 1800's home many years ago and was just enchanted by it. Simply put, there are pretty much no other properties like this within the greater Atlanta metropolitan area, period. This one might have been the last of Atlanta's unrestored, magnificent grand homes. Only a small handful of mansions of this scale remain in the city, and none to my knowledge offer such a wonderful balance of location, privacy, space, comfort and amenities. Back in 2004, when I became more aware of the property, I learned that the building was about to be sold to developers who intended to tear it down, build a street through the middle of the lot and erect over two dozen town-homes on it. Long story short, through a lot of luck and perseverance the property was saved.

What makes this estate unique

There were three primary aspects of this house that made me fall in love with it. First thing you notice about it is the breath-taking way the house exudes a prominence and stature - it is like nothing else on the block. You walk along a quaint and lovely tree-lined street dotted with charming turn-of-the-century homes, then suddenly, there it is, massive! Twice as far back from the street as typical houses in the city, the lot is nearly perfectly flat with the slightest elevation planting this massive structure on the lot like a crown jewel.

Classic old southern charm

  • 5 of 5

Perfect home for our weekend family reunion. Spacious enough to accommodate my group of 10. Played football and frisbee in the large backyard. Beds were comfortable. Nicola greeted and oriented us to the home. She or Jake were gracious and helpful hosts. Would definitely stay there again

Very good

  • 4 of 5

We were a party of 12 from 8 different countries, Brazil, Uruguay, Malaysia, Philippines, U.K. Australia, Czech Republic and the USA.

All adults, 3 couples and 6 singles, 2 females and 4 males.

The only drawback for us was only 3 bathrooms, for a smaller group, 4 couples or 8 Howard house would be brilliant.

Andre and Jake were both fantastic and did everything to make our stay perfect.

We had a Board Meeting on one day with an additional 5 people attending and the house was perfect.

Excellent accommodation only drawback for our group was only 3 bathrooms, apart from that it was perfect and the location was brilliant, only 15-20 minutes from down town

This is a gorgeous house inside and out on a big private property. You get the feeling of being in Atlanta in an era gone by. The house is kept in top notch condition and is great for big families and entertaining.

Beautiful home with so much character!

  • 5 of 5

Andre and Jake were so helpful and great during this whole experience! We had never rented a VRBO before, and we look forward to doing it again if everyone is as wonderful as these guys.

Andre lives right on the property, in a separate house, so it was convenient and nice to see him around, in case of any questions or issues (which we had no issues!).

The home is so beautiful, full of character (built in the 1820's), but renovated and is amazing for entertaining space (the 10 of us found ourselves hanging out in the kitchen area most of the stay.

They had all the amenities necessary for you to pack your clothes, and move right in. We had 2 little toddlers with us, and they had a blast just running from room to room (its a huge home with so much space!); the kids were in heaven!

Thanks so much for such a great experience for my entire family guys! Looking forward to next time!!!

What an amazing experience!!

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at this fantastic home for 4 nights and it was a top notch experience. From start to finish of the transaction it was professional, personal and met my every expectation! Not only was the property everything it is in the pictures, the professionalism of the owner and his assistant Mary Anne, was exceptional! I highly recommend this property - and if you get the opportunity to stay there, breakfast on the veranda will be a memory that will live with you forever!

We booked this house for a retirement dinner and overnight stay. Great experience as Andre was very accommodating and pleasant to deal with. Beautiful old home in central Atlanta with updated kitchen and large bedrooms. Perfect for events or stays with large families. The large wrap-around porch is ideal for gatherings. We would stay here again!
