The Gatehouse has been completely renovated and fully equipped with quality sheets, towels, furniture, and a complete kitchen. The first floor has 2 single beds in the 4th bedroom, also fitted with a washer & dryer for your convenience. There is also 1/2 bath beside this bedroom and the kitchen. There are 3 bedrooms on the 2nd floor, each with a full bathroom. There is a large porch off the master bedroom overlooking the river, fields, and ocean, with a beautiful mountain backdrop.

A fully equipped kitchen with all new appliances, such as a gas stove, refrigerator, and dishwasher. The kitchen has plenty of counter space with ample dishes and kitchen supplies for gourmet cooking. The dining room, located next to the kitchen, can seat 8 to 12 people. The living space is large, with ample room for relaxation around the fireplace on cool evenings, or for entertaining on the large back porch overlooking the ocean. There is also a porch on the front of the side that is about 4 feet wide and about 16 feet long, another place to relax and enjoy.

The 48 acre Glasseel Farm has rolling fields, and is a beautiful place to walk and enjoy nature. Many birds gather at the confluence of the river and the ocean. The corner or the river and the ocean has been used as an archeological site and some of the findings are in Museums in Bar Harbor and Augusta.

This is a very uniquely situated farm which nurtures animals, birds and plants. An ideal heaven for a naturalist to explore. There are many places to walk, hike, bike, swim and enjoy in this area. There are many local organic farms/farmers markets, where one can buy organic vegetables, meat, and dairy such as fresh farm eggs, milk, and yogurt.

Whether you turn right out of the driveway towards Schoodic Acadia Park in Winter Harbor, (which is part of The Acadia National Park) it is about 30 minutes away from the GateHouse; Or if you turn left out of the driveway and head towards Blackswooods Scenic Byway in Franklin- towards Donnell's Pond, George's Pond, and Tunk lake; among the few of many lakes that are surrounded by mountains for the nature enthusiast.

Whether this is your first time to Maine or you are a returning visitor, the Gatehouse is sure to fit your needs and provide you with lifelong memories and experiences!

About Elizabeth

Elizabeth is our wonderful manager who is handling reservations and manages the GateHouse Vacation Rental for us. We are international travelers with properties is unique places. When we retired few years ago and saw the Glaseel farm, it took only one day to decide to buy and treasure the uniqueness of it's location, natural beauty and amazing wild life and bird life at this place. The confluence of the river and the ocean is rich with history as well as variety of wild life and ocean life. Several digs at the site has produced many artifacts that are in Bar harbor and Augusta museums.

Elizabeth purchased this house in 2008

Why Elizabeth chose Acadia

Maine is a very unique environment; from it's physical topography, to it's ocean exposures, it's wild life and bird life, as well as it's unique and delightful people; We have and do travel the world over (often); we experienced Maine in 1998 and got hooked on Maine. The Farm is a very unique setting with easy access to Flander's River and Atlantic Ocean by Flander's. We have amazing wilderness; many shore birds, water fowls, Bald Eagles, Ospery and more.

What makes this house unique

The Glasseel salt farm is a heaven for nature lovers. In contrast to tourist villages boiling with vacationers and gift shops; at our Salt Farm, one connects with nature, away from all the crowds with ample activities to spend your day. Our unique location allows vacationers to be less than 30 minutes from Ellsworth and around one hour to Acadia National Park in Bar Harbor and all its surrounding towns. We are 1/2 hour from Winter Harbor and Acadia Schoodic National Park via The Schoodic National Scenic Byway.

Wonderful place for a family!

  • 5 of 5

We have a family of 7, with our 5 children all being over the age of 20. This year, we were able to match schedules for all of us, with the exception of our eldest son. :( Gatehouse was perfect for us! The place is well appointed and the bedrooms and bathrooms worked out well for our gang. There was a little road noise, since the house is a bit close to the road, but overall, that wasn't a horrible problem. The views are lovely and the property is great for walks. We really enjoyed using the Lobster Hut for cocktails and for a lobster dinner extravaganza! Liz, the Property Manager, was a great help, suggesting places to go and things to see. We visited Bar Harbor and Acadia, both on Mt. Desert Island and in Winter Harbor, went hiking, rented sea kayaks for a morning and hung out together in the evening with family game nights and lots of catching up! It was a great vacation and Gatehouse was the best venue for it all! We hope to return some time!

Excellent House!! Greatest Vacation Ever!!

  • 5 of 5

We had three families, each with 2 kids/teenagers, so we needed a big property that could accommodate us. This house was perfect for us. It was clean and spacious, and the kids really enjoyed it. We had a great time and we definitely recommend this property!

Highly Recommend

  • 5 of 5

Our multigenerational family was looking for a property in Maine to spend the Fourth of July and celebrate a retirement and 2 graduations. We could not have found a more perfect place. The grandchildren loved having room to explore the wildlife and nature. The hay baling kept them watching for hours. We used the Lobster Hut for grilling on the 4th and s'mores along with fireworks.

The view was incredible. Mr Ross, as the kids called him, made many recommendations for food and activities. LOVED our breakfast at the Franklin Trading Post !!! The kitchen was so well equipped that we cooked most meals at the Gatehouse. Thank You for so many family memories.

Perfectly located to explore Downeast Maine without being in the midst of the tourism. Approximately 30 miles from Bar Harbor you are close enough to enjoy all that Acadia National Park has to offer and yet come home to relax away from the bustle. Further to the north and east is the quiet side of Acadia with Schoodic Point known for its crashing surf and rugged coast.
