About Jim and Jan Eitzen

This is our family home. We have enjoyed numerous summers at the lake together. The large property is joined as a duplex where the owners currently live.

Jim and Jan Eitzen purchased this house in 2001

Why Jim and Jan Eitzen chose Clitherall

Clitherall is a nice sized lake. Not so large that it is busy with boat traffic, but not so small that you can't enjoy a spin on the jet ski or long runs with the ski boat. Just the right size. Not a lot of traffic. We think the lake shore of this home is among the best in that it is so private you don't see neighbors. As you walk the path to the lake and break through the trees to the beautiful expanse of water, you feel like you have just stepped away from the world into your own peaceful retreat.

Company Retreat

  • 5 of 5

We stayed there for a company retreat and had a really good time. The house was bigger and had more space than we anticipated. There was 14 people there and there was plenty of space for everyone. When we first got there Jan was there to give a tour and explained how things worked. She was always available via text for any questions when we had them and responded very promptly. She was very friendly and helpful. The scenery was amazing. They had a nice fire pit and patio tables down by the lake for people to enjoy. The beach was very private and secluded from the other houses. Everyone had a great time while we were there.

Wonderful Family Vacation!

  • 5 of 5

We had a very large group (20 people), and finding accommodations for that sized group can be difficult to say the least. We arrived at the house, and could not believe how spacious it was! There was ample room for everyone, and we didn't feel like we were on top of each other at all. There was no lack of things to do either. We rented jet skis and a pontoon, so between the house and lake, we were always occupied! The lake was perfect, as the water is about waist high for 150 feet or so. We had some younger kids, so it was perfect for them...and us, since we didn't have to worry about the water being too deep for them. The owners were great, and addressed any needs very quickly. They were even kind enough to bring us fresh eggs!

My only critique would be to have a few more extra blankets since it was a bit chilly at night, and to have detailed instructions for using the television. (We really only used it for the kids to watch movies when they were too tired to play anymore) Overall, we really enjoyed our stay, and would recommend it!

Lots lacking for >$7000.a week

  • 2 of 5

Clitherall Lake is beautiful! Clean and clear, with good fishing. The large house we rented was good sized, with very comfortable beds, however lacked many basic amenities and considerations. The owners did not disclose that they live on the property, pretty much attached to the big house. It was sometimes awkward. Jan (owner) was out mowing the first day we were there, even though the grass was already mowed. I'm unsure why she felt the need to do this. The kitchen lacked decent knives, none were sharp. The coffee machine had to be unplugged and plugged back in between pots. We forgot a hairdryer and when asked if there was one available, Jan said "no, not to lend out". The TV and entertainment system were fine, but no instructions were available on how to operate the system. There was what appeared to be a pretty impressive home speaker system throughout, but we had no idea how to work it. When asked if the TV was equipped so we could play our birthday video for our brother, Jan was unsure. We asked if there were games at the house, and Jan replied yes, but could not guarantee that all pieces were there. The sandy beach was small, and the ladder for the dock was found in the weeds unattached. The lawn furniture at the beach was dirty, and had to be cleaned/dusted of bugs and dirt prior to using it all. We had spotty internet the whole week, and Jan came to replace the router a few days before we left. A/C shut off upstairs and it was determined that it was a battery, which was fixed. Doorknobs/locks on some rooms were stripped. All guest beds had a set of towels, but only one wash cloth. Jan eventually brought 2 more wash cloths over for our large group. My husband and I shared a large room on the second floor that included a huge closet and a King bed. There was a child's desk with no chair on one wall, and one bedside nightstand. The rooms (with the exception of the downstairs living room and dining room) generally lacked furniture. I don't normally write negative reviews, and I waited on this one until I got feedback from the rest of the gang. We flew in from all corners of the country, and yes we did enjoy ourselves, however for the cost, we were disappointed.

Owner's Response: I am sorry that you found our home to be less than your expectations. We will be sure to look at your review for ways that we can improve. However, for the benefit of others that may be evaluating our home we would like to be sure to be informative. Our Lease Agreement that is sent with every quote prior to booking, including yours, specifically points out the smaller attached house. I reviewed our correspondence and see that I even stated that you should be sure to have “read the lease agreement prior to renting the home” for 24 people during the prime 4th of July week. It is also mentioned on the VRBO site. We do not share the grounds and take every measure to ensure privacy of our guests. The comment about mowing is odd as Jan does not mow. We hire that out and I verified our records that the lawn was mowed on Thursday of your week, not check in day. I am unsure who you saw mowing and where, but I can assure you it was not the home owner. We want our guests to have an amazing week, so when they ask us about something specific our response is similar to the one I gave you regarding the board games. This is my specific response, “There are some board games. As we are never sure how previous guests have treated the games, if you have a family favorite you may want to bring it along. There are plenty of spaces for game play in the house.” We have over 200 people through the home in a season. That response was intended to be helpful to your group having a good week. With only 6 hours to turn over such a large home to have it ready for the next guests, we do review standard maintenance items each week. Any additional maintenance items we ask in our lease agreement to be notified immediately so that we can address them. We are disappointed that this either did not happen or was not satisfactory for you and your group. This is the first we have heard of the unresolved maintenance items.

Wonderful Home for Large Family

  • 5 of 5

We had a fabulous family experience at this home. It is very spacious and could easily accommodate our group of 14 adults and 15 children. The kids had enough space to run around and really enjoyed the beach and lake. The lake is a gorgeous clear lake that is not very busy, and we had a lot of success catching fish. The owners, Jim and Jan were very friendly and easy to work with. We would definitely stay here again!

Space!!

  • 5 of 5

Nineteen of us celebrated our family Christmas here and if you are looking for a home with LOTS of room this is it! The pictures do not show how spacious the home is. Only problem we had was having younger children who did not want to sleep far away from their parents. It would be a great place for older kids to sleep on the lowest level. Jan was great to work with and we had everything we needed- lots of dishes! The sledding down the hill was great!
