About the property

3 BR 1.5 BA Sleeps 6

Nestled in the woods in the heart of Harbor Country is the historical Coach House at the Flynn Estate. The Coach House offers privacy and luxury just a short distance from downtown Sawyer & Lake Michigan. Relax on our acre yard with your family and friends around the fire, or explore the beauty of the surrounding woods. Just a short drive to Warren Dunes State Park, and Downtown Three Oaks, and only a quick bike ride to Greenbush Brewery, Infusco Coffee Cafe, Catherine Doll Designs, Go Fish, Scarlett Macaw Art Center, Fitzgeralds, and the Sawyer Garden Center in downtown Sawyer.

The Coach House is a fully renovated second story walk up over our main garage with it's own private entrance and large private deck. Designed with an updated Mid-Century modern theme, the Coach House has everything you need for a quick get away or a relaxing vacation.

The kitchen has been designed with the chef in mind. There is an induction cook top, built in oven, microwave, and all the accessories you will need to create the perfect feast. There is also a large grill on the deck for your quintessential summer time cookouts.

The master bedroom has a king bed with it's own private half bath. The second room has a comfortable queen, and the third bedroom is fitted with two twins.

The main room focus is our modern and inviting fireplace, with a large sectional sofa, and our custom made dining table. Everything ready for all your entertaining needs with a flat screen TV, free WiFi, and a vintage turntable fully stocked with records of the era. We also supply some vintage games and cards for fun.

The Flynn Estate was built in the 1920's by John Flynn. He was the treasurer of the Teamsters in Chicago and this was his summer & weekend getaway. There are stories of boot legging and gangster activity, including history of Al Capone.

The Coach House is a pet friendly and non smoking property.

About Chandra Stubbs

We are a family of three and currently reside in the Bungalow at The Flynn Estate. I am the Executive Administrator at JohnsonRauhoff in St. Joseph, MI. My husband and I own an inventory business in Chicago, and our daughter is about to start her second year at CalArts in Character Animation . The Coach house is actually my former studio. For 12 years I created ceramic works that were shown nationally. We have a true passion for Mid Century antiques, and eclectic design. We also own a 1969 Airstream that we pull around the country exploring and creating memories. We relocated to Sawyer from Evanston in 2000, and have never been sorry. We love the small town feel and our ability to pull out of our drive on our bikes and disappear for miles on the back country roads.

Chandra Stubbs purchased this chateau / country house in 2000

Why Chandra Stubbs chose Sawyer

We love the fact that we fell upon a 'Chicago Bungalow' in the woods! We felt at home almost instantly, and it wasn't until after the fact that we learned the history of the property. Apparently we live in a home built by very characteristic people, who were involved in boot legging and other questionable activities of their time. We love the privacy and seclusion of the house and coach house, and it's connection to downtown Sawyer. We feel we are care takers, and we are trying to bring this marvelous home back to it's glory days.

What makes this chateau / country house unique

The privacy of our acre surrounded by woods gives you the feel that you are alone and secluded. But in reality you are only a short drive to all the fun Harbor Country has to offer. Guests will love the abundance of wineries, breweries, Lake Michigan sunsets, antique malls, hiking trails, biking routes, kayaking, boating, festivals, casinos, and much more.

We are also just a short distance to Notre Dame and Andrews Universities.

Winter wonderland

Our NYE was was absolutely fantastic!. I was so plesantly surprised to see such a clean house. Chandra was super attentive and available whenever we needed something. We were hoping for a lot of snow and our wish came true! It literally snowed the whole time so we truly enjoyed the stay. The scenery was beautiful. We are hoping to come back in the summer when its a little warmer to enjoy to nearby beaches.

Outstanding getaway and host!

  • 5 of 5

My fiance and I could not have loved this place more - nor could our dog, who loved running around the large fenced in yard surrounded by woods. Chandra was fast to respond and made sure we had everything we needed. The house was perfectly clean and the interior decorating was amazing. We have now spent a few weekends in Michigan at different rentals, but this was by far our favorite. We loved the privacy and also the ability to cook and grill our own food on the large deck out back. Can't wait to go back!

The property was well-kept, lovely. For a second floor coach house everything was in good order

  • 5 of 5

Our group of 4 loved our stay. Chandra was easily accessible by phone and very responsive. The inside was comfortable for eating, sleeping and the deck off the living room was a lovely alternative for convening as well as daytime privacy. There were plenty of modern dishes and cookware to allow us to cook a wonderful dinner. The wifi and tv was working well so we could easily communicate and chill. The area is great to relax in. We were blessed with great beach weather and not the beastly hot recent Chicago weather. We'd definitely come back

Loved it!

  • 5 of 5

This was my 2nd visit to this property. It was just as good if not better than my first experience. Great location in the middle of Harbor Country. The home is super clean and wonderfully decorated. Chandra, the host, was very helpful with recommendations and communication. Looking forward to a return visit next summer!

A cool, comfy house with history & a 1960s vibe

  • 5 of 5

What a lovely place! My parents, sister, young daughter & I recently stayed here and we had a great time. Upon arrival, there was a welcome basket on the counter with snacks and local coffee & wines (one cab and one sparkling wine) and more, plus a sweet note, all courtesy of our lovely hostess, Chandra. While we never met Chandra in person, we had a sense of being taken care of during our stay. (She is available for questions via text & is very friendly when she responds.)

The Carriage House is next to Chandra's house, but we didn't see much of anyone else. And the grounds felt very quiet & peaceful, especially while lolling with a book in the hammock on the deck. The house itself has a lot of history (which you can read about in a binder provided) and it had a cool 1960s vibe, complete with mid-century furniture & a vintage record player with the hip records to match (think: Henry Mancini). But the technology was decidedly modern: we were very comfortable despite the 90+ degree heat (thanks to central air!) and we appreciated the LG washer/dryer for keeping our beach towels clean.

This house has a huge master bedroom with a half bath in it, plus a bedroom with a comfy queen-sized bed and another bedroom with two twin beds. The latter seemed like it was more of a children's room because of the small beds, but could easily accommodate two average-sized adults. There is only one shower, in the hall bathroom, but it's a great one (parents of little ones: there is no bath). Because of the central air and the door that blocks off the stairway, you will feel amazingly cool and comfortable.

This is a great place to kick back with a glass of wine after a long day at the lake or exploring Sawyer. Sadly, we didn't spend much time exploring downtown (we were there for a family reunion), but we LOVED Infusco Coffee Roasters' coffee & pastries and there is a huge green market across the street that has everything, including upscale groceries, a beautiful gift shop and one of the best nurseries I've ever come across.

We were extremely happy with our stay here, and you will be, too!
