Studio with separate sleeping alcove, 1 Bathroom, Sleeps 4
Gorgeous studio/pool house. The studio is adjacent our pool and spa. Guests are welcome to use this area during their stay. The beautiful pool area right outside studio door has a deck with comfortable furniture and is very private from the main house. We do use the pool in the summer. Please inquire about availability and price of booking private use of the pool during your stay. We do not use the spa during guests stay. Since the spa is connected to the pool it is not always hot. We heat the spa for two hours each day guests would like to use it, as available.
WE HAVE A VERY STRICT NO SMOKING POLICY.
There is a fire pit and gas barbecue.
We do not allow parties.
Primary guests must be at least 25 years old and verified by VRBO/HomeAway. Please be ready to show ID upon arrival.
The studio does not have a full kitchen (no sink, stovetop or oven). There is a microwave, toaster oven, coffee maker and a two burner cook top. Do not hesitate to ask for any other cooking items you may need. The sink in the bathroom is a utility sink, making doing dishes easier----think tiny house. We provide guests with paper goods and guests are welcome to leave dirty dishes for us to clean upon check out.
The pool warms up in the summer and is not heated year round. We would consider heating it for an additional fee in the Spring. Since the spa is attached to the pool it is not kept heated. We heat the spa for a two hours per days booked as guests request.
We do not rent the studio for private parties.
The pool is not fenced from the studio so may not be the best fit for young children.
We have a strict no pets policy.
The studio has a very comfortable queen bed which is in an alcove with dark curtains which provides privacy from the living area of the studio (see photos) and darkness for day sleepers. The comfortable couch has a pull out bed, we are happy to provide a blow up queen mattress for guests to use on the pull out couch.
Our property is long and narrow and overlooks Millard Canyon with the main house (our residence) up from the studio providing privacy for guests (and us). It is located in a quiet residential neighborhood (not a business district, as a hotel may be); therefore, we don't allow parties or noise after 10:00 pm.
Home is adjacent to the Angeles National Forest and hiking trails are right out the door. These trails a not crowded as trails on the east side of Altadena are. Many times--especially during the week you may have the whole beautiful mountain to yourself (see photos of hiking trial).
El Prieto Canyon right outside the door which are known as world-class mountain bike riding trails.
Large flat screen TV with cable and internet. The studio has a magnificent view to Catalina on a clear day or twinkly city views and overlooks beautiful Millard Canyon.
Altadena is in the foothills right above Pasadena--a short 15 minute drive, twenty minutes to downtown LA and 45 minutes to Santa Monica beach. You really feel like you are getting away from it all but are very close to anything you might need. Very comfortable for the extended stay traveler.
VRBO does not allow same day bookings. Please contact us directly if you'd like to same day book so we an arrange this.
JPL is 2 miles away, Cal Tech is close. This would be a nice place to stay if you are visiting either of those places. Ask about the availability of our special business traveler rate.
Come for a weekend retreat. A weekend spent in our studio could consist of coffee or tea pool side, hiking or world-class mountain biking on El Prieto trail right outside the studio door, a relaxing massage on the pool deck or inside the roomy studio (additional fee to masseuse) and a swim in the pool or a soak in the spa. Finish the evening with a barbecue and toasting marshmallows at the fire pit. It's a beautiful place to stay for a retreat.
Great option if your coming into town for the Rose Bowl games or parade. It's about a 5 mile drive.

About Dennis and Margaret
I, Margaret was raised in both Southern and Northern California and am a huge fan of California. I was happy to meet and marry Dennis---a good mid-western boy from Chicago in 2000. We cherish this really special property which we have totally remodeled and enjoy sharing the studio with guests. No small children live on the property.
Dennis and Margaret purchased this Studio in 2002
Why Dennis and Margaret chose Altadena
We visited this property at an open house Mother's Day 2001. It was a hot May Day and when we stood on the patio overlooking Millard Canyon and felt the cool breeze and took in the amazing view we found home. The studio is very private from our home and very beautiful.
What makes this Studio unique

The studio is perfectly acomodated. It’s has everything you need. Really clean. The outside is a small paradise the breathtaking view of the canyon. The view at night of the city lights! Couldn’t ask for more. My wife and I thank you guys for making this an awesome stay. Wouldn’t think about it if we decide to go back to LA to stay at your place.
For the record, I would give this rental 4.5 stars but that is not an option. Lisa and I have stayed at more vacation properties than I can count. We also rarely, if ever have stayed at a rental that was next to the owner (except for the property in Auburn, CA). Our experience has generally been one where the home was separate from the rental. Additionally, swimming pool or spas are always private. In this case, the pool is not private but Margaret and Dennis were extremely accommodating! The only reason I would not give this 5 stars is that the rental seems to have been converted from a garage or workshop. The lack of a sink in the kitchen can be frustrating... but it is doable. We were able to cook using the outdoor grill, but the grill was very difficult to light. Once lit though, it works fantastic. This rental is advertised as being in a quiet neighborhood and I would say that is true to a point. The neighbors were loud until pretty late on a weekday, so this put a bit of a damper on what we thought would be a quiet time by the pool. The following nights however were much quieter. Margaret and Dennis allow renters to keep to themselves but are very accessible with quick responses to questions. We were able to easily negotiate times when we had the pool to ourselves. The waterfall into the pool is a nice backdrop and the canyon below the property made us feel like we were definitely out of the city! I guess I am grading on the curve here because we have stayed at so many rentals. Sometimes it is the little things that make a place a 5 star for us and there were just so many little things that I would change to make this place feel more welcoming. But as I said, we are pretty particular and have stayed at rentals that I wanted to give 6 stars to. That being said, this rental is an amazing value compared to other rentals near LA at twice the price. If the price remains at $150 a night, I would highly recommend. Just be sure to note some of the details like sharing the pool with the owners, the concrete floors stained with paint, the lank of a stove or sink in the bathroom, etc.
Once again we really encourage guests to read the details of the listing prior to booking. In one of the first paragraphs we state that the studio does not have a full kitchen and the utility sink in the bathroom is the only sink. Yes, the studio was originally a garage but was drywalled and had no door when we bought the property. We've subsequently made a lot of improvements to it, including just recently painting it. The concrete floors are a cool feature to most of the people we know and our designer friend advised us not to finish them...everyone has their own aesthetics. I wish this guest would have let me know that a neighbor's noise was disturbing him, I would have asked them to quiet down. And yes a private pool for 150-175 is pretty cheap. We don't use the pool much when we have guests and only in the summer. So guests typically have the whole pool area to themselves during there stay.
My husband and I stayed at this lovely property. The owners were very gracious during our stay, making sure we were comfortable and had everything we needed. They provided a lot of information for the area, including recreational, dining, and shopping. It was a very quite and peaceful stay for us.... exactly what we were looking for and needed!!!
Great Environment provided by Outstanding Hosts
My home away from home gets better with each visit.
An Oasis for the Rose Bowl
We loved this place. It was a perfect spot for the Rose Bowl. You’re close to everything. Dennis and Margaret were very helpful and gave us great Rose Bowl tips. We even found a Pre-Rose Bowl magazine in the studio when we got there.
It was a very relaxing time and so tranquil. It’s in a nice quiet neighborhood. It was great to not to have to be in the hustle-bustle of the city during our stay.
The Jacuzzi time was hot and perfect. We cooked out on the grill a couple of nights. Clean up was not a problem at all. The kitchen had everything we needed.
The views are incredible. They have done a great job on the landscape. You’re literally in the mountains. We walked out the back door and hiked in the mountains on a beautiful day.
The studio had tons of information and directions for the local areas. We had great sushi and saki at Ichiban. And spent New Year’s Eve at Bacchus having a fabulous meal listening to Jazz.
It was a perfect time. We highly recommend this place and will be coming back for sure.
Great hilltop studio
The studio has absolutely amazing pool, hot tub and gas fire pit. The trees around the pool are wonderful day or night. We enjoyed soaking in the sun on the balcony in the morning. The owners were very accommodating and accessible. Overall, a wonderful stay!
Amazing hiking and mountain bike trails right outside the door. Lounging by this pool makes you feel like you really are 'away from it all ' but your 15 minutes from Pasadena and 20 minutes from downtown LA. Very comfortable for business travelers.

This home overlooks a canyon and the pool does not have a security gate from the studio but is gated. There is no fence on the canyon side so this might not be the right spot for young children. The home is in a wonderful neighborhood, no loud music/noise after 10:00. Please check with owners if you'd like to have additional day guests. No parties.
