Why Mildred Siminoff chose St Maarten

My family fell in love with St. Maarten on our first visit more almost 30 years ago. The beaches, the shopping, the restaurants, the casinos, the nightlight, the water sports, over the years, we've done it all and after only a few short visits, we decided to purchase a winter home on the island. This was the first and only home we looked at, we fell in love with the villa and its location.

What makes this house unique

I have traveled extensively across Europe, North American and even Australia. I still love coming 'home' to St. Maarten.

Guestbook comments from the manager

My wife and I stayed here in July. The location is perfect, close to numerous beaches and restaurants yet in a very quiet, secure neighborhood. The communication with the owner and local property manager was very easy. The villa has a spectacular view and very nice pool with a large deck. The owner has a very useful notebook filled with insider information about the island and how to get around like a local that we very much appreciated. We would highly recommend this villa.

BEACHES: Dutch Side: Mullet Bay - Only two minutes from the house! Cupecoy Beach - Very pretty. French Side: Orient - There are a lot of water sports, places to eat, activities, etc. It is a beautiful beach. Pinel Island a tiny spit of sand off the St. Martin coast is nice too. CASINOS: Atlantis World Casino in Cupecoy and Casino Royal in Maho are 5 minutes from the house. SAILING/BOATING: There are numerous sailing and sailing/snorkeling excursions. The following are very reputable and have been around for a long time and are not far from the house (all on the Dutch side). Very popular are the snorkeling expeditions to Prickly Pear. Beautiful Vacation Retreat, Close to Airport, Amenities and Beaches

  • 5 of 5

My family and I stayed in the home for the week between Christmas and New Years this past year and we only have wonderful things to say about both the house and the host! The house is conveniently located within 10 minutes (driving) from the airport and is only a few minute drive to Mullet Bay, one of the island's most beautiful beaches on the Dutch side.

The house is extremely spacious and looks exactly like the pictures. There were 5 of us who stayed together in the house and it was more than enough space. There are three full baths and two bedrooms, one with a king bed, and the other with two twins, as well as a queen pull-out couch. The house has it's own private pool, which is big enough for lounging in or swimming a few laps. The house is also in a fully gated community, with a full-time security guard, so we never felt unsafe.

In addition to the house, the host/renter of the house is extremely responsive and helpful when it comes to planning your vacation. She will send you a guide to the island with tips that include the best beaches, restaurants, supermarkets, excursions, tips for driving on the island, etc. We had several questions before traveling to the island and she was always extremely prompt and helpful with the information she provided to us.

- A car is absolutely necessary to get to the house and to explore the island. One of the most beautiful parts of St. Martin is the selection of beaches, all are different and beautiful in their own way. I would recommend a car to anyone traveling to the island.

-The food is great all over the island, we really didn't have a bad meal. I would suggest bringing a small amount of cash to most beaches because they usually have beach bars and cafes that do not accept credit card and you will want to try the grilled chicken and ribs with rice. Plan at least one meal in Grand Case for some delicious French food.

-Plan a snorkeling trip the water is beautiful! Otherwise, you can entertain yourself by going to a different beach everyday!

Some of our favorite beaches

All the magazines in the house will describe the many wonderful beaches. Here are some of our favorites:

Dutch Side

Mullet Bay A very pretty crescent beach only two minutes from the house and you can rent or bring chairs. Don’t bother with the food there as it’s not that good and they take forever to prepare anything. Bring your own instead.

Cupecoy A string of small, narrow beaches backed against the cliffs. Very pretty. Many nudists like to use this beach.

Warning: We advise against going to Guana Beach. The surf is extremely rough and dangerous and cars are often broken into there.

French Side

Orient on the French side is a long stretch of beach set up French style- meaning you rent chairs and so it is divided up by the different names of the concessions renting these. There are a lot of water sports, places to eat etc. It is a beautiful beach. We particularly like going to the concession called Palm Beach– it is less crowded and the restaurant is really nice for lunch, but no water sports. If you buy lunch you don’t pay for chairs and umbrellas. However, there are many other areas along this long, beautiful stretch of beach and they are all good.

Pinel Island a tiny spit of sand off the St. Martin coast is nice too. Go to Cul de Sac (past Grand Case) and you park your car at the informal marina where you take a small boat to get there ($7.00 round trip for a 5 minute ride). You can rent chairs and the water is crystal clear and very calm. The restaurant on Pinel provides a very nice lunch or stop in Marigot at Serafina or Le Sucrier and pick up some sandwiches to bring or make them at home!

Le Gallion A calm peaceful bay- very shallow- protected by a reef. This is a nice, laid-back beach. Chair and beach umbrella rental is also available as are inexpensive burgers, sandwiches or a full lunch along with a full range of water sports are also available. The snorkeling is also quite good there. Huge variety of fish in the “grassy areas” in the water and these areas are pretty shallow as well so this is one of the safest and nicest places to snorkel.

Friar’s Bay – Is the same deal as Le Galion- though I tend to like Le Galion better.

Rouge Is a very beautiful beach- the water is deeper and can be a bit rougher but this is very, very pretty beach. About $10 for 2 chairs and an umbrella and the “restaurant” serves great ribs and chicken. This place, unlike at Orient or Galion, is run by locals. (10 minutes from the house)

Plum Bay (Baie aux Prunes) I love this beach. There are no concessions or amenities. It is within 10 minutes of the house. Easiest way to get there is turn right on the main road and go through Mullet Bay (where the golf course is) and through Coupecoy. After you have passed Portocupecoy you go up and around a hill and look for the sign for Baie Long or Long Beach. Turn left down the road towards La Semana and follow the road past La Semana and keep going. The first parking area for a Beach is for Long Beach and the second will be for Plum Beach. Park and walk down to beach. The water and beach are lovely.

Pinel Island: Go to Cul de Sac and follow road to the harbor where you will find boats to Pinel- a lovely tiny island with chairs, restaurants and lovely, clear water. Great for snorkeling.

Many other beaches abound- explore and find the ones that suit you!

Tip for a better beach day: Our island winds generally come out of the east. This means that the eastern side of the island is always a bit windier. When the winds are above 10 mph the surf on the eastern side (particularly at Orient) gets rough. If this is not for you check out the wind rates on the Weather Channel (channel 21), “Local on the 8s” segment.
