Hyggelig (Hoo-ga-lee), A Cozy Retreat in a Peaceful Fishing Village

Bedrooms 2
Space 1,700 sq ft
Property type cottage

About the property

2 Bedrooms, 2 Bathrooms, Sleeps 8

Hyggelig (hoo-ga-lee) is a Danish word expressing an atmosphere of well-being, comfort, and togetherness: a grand coziness found right here in Marshallberg, NC!

Marshallberg is a peaceful little fishing village on Core Sound with a sense of place and permanence. Marshallberg streets are perfect for dog-walking and biking. Its shallow shores are ideal for clamming, birding, and kayaking. Cape Lookout, Harker's Island and Shackleford Banks are a short boat ride from the Marshallberg boat ramp.

Hyggelig is a 5 minute walk from the harbor, a waterfront park and a boat ramp. With spacious rooms, large windows and wooden floors, the home brings the outside in. Large windows facing the enclosed back porch make the living room feel even larger. The living room features large plank pine floors, a tuned piano, sitting area, game table, and a wood stove.

The kitchen and dining room overlook azaleas and large pines in the front yard. The main bedroom is a suite, sleeping 2 to 6. It has two sleeping areas, a walk-in closet, a large bathroom with garden tub and shower, and access to a large deck shaded by wisteria.

The second bedroom sleeps two and has a full bath and access to the backyard through a sweet little stoop. The fenced backyard is your own private park shaded by pecan, maple, and fig trees.

Come home to yourself in Hyggelig!

Proximity to conveniences and nearby attractions

We are located midway between Atlantic Beach and the Cedar Island-Ocracoke ferry and less than 30 minutes from Beaufort and the ferry at Harker's Island.

About Anna Hilting

The house was my home for more than 12 years and it has been a labor of love to renovate it. I enjoy caring for it and I'm happy to share it with you.

Anna Hilting purchased this cottage in 1998

Why Anna Hilting chose Marshallberg

Marshallberg has a great sense of place. It has the old-timey feel of Grand Junction, the small town in west Tennessee where my mother was raised, and where I came home to as a child.

I hope you'll enjoy the small town atmosphere.

What makes this cottage unique

The open layout offers areas to settle in for reading, eating, or visiting that feel cozy while retaining a connection to rest of the house.

Nicer than the pictures reflect. It actually is very cozy and dog friendly.

Anna, the host, could not be more attentive and helpful. The house was very clean when we arrived and Anna had placed fresh flowers in several rooms. She left detailed instructions about the property as well as nearby places of interest. The sun room in the back of the house was especially nice in the afternoon. The house has a clean, Scandiavian feel to it, consistent with its Danish name. The kitchen is well stocked with everything you need. When we had one problem with the house, Anna responded promptly and solved the problem over the phone. The fenced yard is large enough for dogs to get good exercise. The community is small, out of the way and quiet. If that appeals to you, I could not recommend Anna and the house more.

We rented this house for my daughter and her bridesmaids to stay at as it was convenient to the wedding venue. The house itself was beautiful and comfortable (even better than the pictures). When I visited the girls there, there was the added touch of fresh flowers from the owner. All of the girls had very positive comments about their stay there!

Relaxing and comfortable

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I took our granddaughter from Louisiana to the Outer Banks. It was our first visit for all of us even though I am an NC native. We found the horses! We relaxed in Beaufort along the dock and enjoyed our visit. The home is nicely situated in close proximity to Harker's Island where we loaded the boat and traveled to the lighthouse and Shackleford. Will return again!

Wonderful place to stay!

  • 4 of 5

The house is much much cuter than the pictures make it look! Owner is super helpful and super sweet. We were there just for weekend for a bachelorette party and there were beautiful flowers all throughout the house (real ones). We had a great time here and would recommend to anyone.

This is an amazing place!

  • 5 of 5

Our whole family had a great time in this rental. Anna was amazing. She has really thought of everything. And this house is a short walk to a little area that has awesome shells! I would definitely rent from Anna again. And the drive from the house to Atlantic beach is beautiful. There are lots to do in this area! I highly recommend this property! Thank you for all the new family memories!
