Three Bedroom Fishing Village Saltbox
This charming little traditional Newfoundland Saltbox home was built around 1850 and is one of the oldest homes in the region. It has been lovingly restored and now offers all the modern conveniences you will need to make your vacation stay both comfortable and memorable.
It was featured on the cover and a seven page article in the 'HOME & CABIN' magazine. You can see this article and view the fantastic slideshow if you visit homeandcabin.ca and type 'Baccalieu cottage' in the search area.
It sits proudly in a meadow in the fishing village of Ochre Pit Cove along the scenic Baccalieu Trail in Conception Bay North, approx. 140 km. from the capital city of St. John's.
This comfortable home is a cozy place to unwind after a long day of hiking and sightseeing. Take a two minute walk to the fishermens wharf and see what todays catch will bring. There is also a whale watching area close to the wharf where you can see the whales breach as they feed on the schools of caplin in the bay.
The cottage has three bedrooms, two on the second floor, and one on the first floor. The master has a queen bed, wing back chair, armchair and desk with chair. The second has a 3/4 (48') bed which can sleep an adult or two children. The third bedroom is located on the first floor has a single bed and would be suitable for a person with limited mobility. Also on the first floor are the fully equipped kitchen, breakfast nook, dining room which seats six and a comfortable living room with an electric fireplace , wing back chairs and a loveseat. There is also a desk and chair if you need to set up your computer. There is a full bathroom with shower on the first floor and half bath with sink and toilet on the second floor.
The cottage has been furnished throughout with country antiques and local art as well as unusual quirky re-purposed decorator items. There is a large deck which wraps around the back and side to sit back and enjoy the ocean breezes. Baccalieu (codfish in Portuguese) Cottage will certainly offer you something more than the usual vacation cottage.
The Baccalieu Trail offers lots to do, you can hike, sightsee, or take a day trip to nearby Trinity Bay where you will discover charming little towns with names like 'Hearts Content, 'Hearts Desire, and 'Hearts Delight'. Photographic opportunities are everywhere. Northern Bay Sands Park is just a few minutes away where you can enjoy a large sandy beach and freshwater swimming hole. If you are brave enough, you can take a dip in the cold Atlantic ocean. Take a day trip to visit the historic towns of Cupids and Brigus where you can take in a live show or sample the tasty goodies offered at the annual Blueberry Festival.
For your entertainment when you just want to sit at home we have wireless internet, cable tv. telephone, stereo, reading material and family board games.
Please note that this region has some of the most beautiful scenery you will find anywhere but it also has a rugged coastline with cliffs. When you are exploring and enjoying the area please use caution and supervise any children in your care.

About Catherine Whalen
I am a retired medical professional who has spent most weekends and all my summers in this area of the Baccalieu Trail for the past number of years. When this property became available in 2001 my husband and I along with a family friend decided to buy it and restore it to its original glory and this year we decided to allow visitors to rent it and enjoy the same newfoundland experience we have been enjoying in this area for many years.
Catherine Whalen purchased this Cottage in 2001
Why Catherine Whalen chose Ochre Pit Cove
This little gem is probably the oldest traditional saltbox home along the Baccalieu Trail and when the opportunity became available to purchase it, we didn't hesitate and it has been a labor of love bringing it back to life. Now it sits proudly in this great little fishing village.
What makes this Cottage unique
We have a large wrap around patio which give great ocean views and the interior is furnished with antiques and vintage, quirky re-purposed furniture.

Our Time at Baccalieu
We stayed at Baccalieu Cottage for 4 nights and it was a dream come true! We could see whales from the cottage deck and had many wonderful walking/hiking excursions in the area.
The cottage was perfect. Tom and Kitty, the owners, were very hospitable and had even put a bottle of wine and fresh codfish in the cottage for us upon our arrival. We would definitely recommend the cottage to anyone considering it. We'd love to come back again.
Maureen.....thank-you so much for taking the time to write a review of your stay at Baccalieu Cottage. It was so nice to meet your husband and daughter and I'm happy that you all enjoyed your experience in our little corner of the world. We would be delighted to host you again if you find yourself back on the Rock. Kitty
Beautiful Seaside Cottage
Our family of four stayed at Baccalieu Cottage for three nights in July 2017. We were greeted by the owner," Kitty" Whalen, upon arrival and she gave us a tour of the home and provided many necessities for our stay. She also arranged for a local fisherman to bring fresh lobsters for our first dinner there-- a great a way to kick off our time at Ochre Pit Cove! The cottage is beautifully decorated and comfortable. It was the perfect place to relax and soak in Newfoundland coastal living.
Rhonda & Marcel....thank-you for taking the time to review your stay at Baccalieu Cottage. I'm happy you and the kids enjoyed the cottage and our great Newfoundland lobsters...they're the best! You are all most welcome to come back anytime. Kitty
A gem for just about any group!
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Baccalieu Cottage. For those who love history, stories, antiques, and lovely decor...this is the place for you. The cottage is beautiful and well kept. A lot of detail has gone into considering people's needs during their stay. The fridge and cupboard have many convenience items, and the kitchen has all the necessary tools to make meals at home. We loved walking less than five minutes to the water, and having a spectacular beach a mere five minute drive away. Our hosts were very considerate and accommodating of our needs...they went above and beyond what most would do for us. Excellent service.
Kim, Dan, Leona & kids.....thank-you so much for the lovely review of your stay at Baccalieu Cottage. I know it must have been challenging for you and Dan on vacation with three small children so I'm happy that Baccalieu Cottage provided your home away from home and it fit all your needs for your family. I would be more than happy to have you all back anytime! Love to all....Kitty

What a charming, beautiful Cottage. We wish we had spent more time here. Kitty did everything to make us enjoy our holidays. The area around is also beautiful with many nice trails with breathtaking views over the ocean.

It was great to be a part of your first vacation to Newfoundland and I hope you made lots of nice memories together in our special little corner of the world. Come back anytime! Kitty
Perfect
After 2 weeks of touring NL our stay at this cottage has been the highlight of our vacation. The cottage is just beautiful; the owners certainly did an amazing job in restoring and decorating it. We loved it. Thank you Kitty for your kind attentions and your warm welcome.

Fantastic Newfoundland Cottage!
We were lucky enough to spend three days in this wonderful Ochre Pit Cove home. We would highly recommend you stay here when visiting Newfoundland. A "stickler" for cleanliness I can tell you the cottage was spotless. Everything and more that was needed for meal preparation was there. The beds were comfortable and quality linens were fresh, just lovely. We came to spend time with our daughter who has recently moved to St. John's and were not disappointed. We spent the days hiking the many trails with breathtaking views in the area. How lovely it was to come back to Baccalieu Cottage in the afternoon and relax on the deck to plan our next day adventure. Thank you Kitty and Tom for all your help and allowing us to make our happy Newfoundland memories. We would love to come back and spend more time at this amazing cottage.

Location
Baccalieu Cottage is located in a small fishing village on the north shore of Conception Bay, Nl. The home is a refurbished mid nineteenth century fishermans home with all the modern conveniences. The area offers fantastic views along both Trinity and Conception Bays. There are icebergs in the spring and whale-watching is a favourite activity of guests at the cottage. There are also lots of opportunities to explore the rugged coastline and photographic opportunities are everywhere. Trinity Bay is just a short drive away and you can visit little coastal communities with names like 'Hearts Content, 'Hearts Desire' and 'Hearts Delight' to name a few. Northern Bay Sands Park is just a few minutes drive away where you can spend the day just relaxing on the beach or if you are brave enough, you can take a dip in the cold Atlantic ocean. Hiking trails are close to the cottage and the village of Grates Cove offers a great place to spend the day exploring. The nearby active fishing town of Bay D' Verde has a museum which will give you an idea of the way of life experienced by Newfoundlanders in days gone by. Just two minutes walk from the cottage you can watch the activity of the friendly local fishermen as they return from the fishing grounds with their catch. Carbonear is a larger town just 20 minutes drive away where you will find supermarkets, shopping and boat tours of the coastline.
