Overview

About the property

House, 2 Bedrooms + Loft + Den, 1 Bath, (Sleeps 6)

This is a very unique property. It is a converted ice house (originally built in 1840s and converted in 1940s) complete with thick oak-paneled walls, fieldstone fireplace and lofts. It sits on an acre of wooded property and is very private. It is a short walk to the waterfront on the East Side of third bay of Highland Lake just down the road. The waterfront area is a peaceful little piece of forested land right on the water with a dock and swimming area. If you have a motorboat, you can tie it up safely at the dock. You can also launch our canoe or row boat from there.

It's the best of both worlds - you can swim and paddle all day but then unplug from the lakeside hubub, return to the woods in the evening and relax with the sound of crickets and toads.

About Mary Ann Marino

I am a producer working in NY and Los Angeles. I grew up in CT and spent my summers on Highland Lake. My family is still on the lake and I get back home every chance I get. It is my favorite place in the world.

Mary Ann Marino purchased this house in 2006

Why Mary Ann Marino chose Connecticut

Because I spent all my childhood summers on Highland Lake and I love it there! I am a fan of the Northwestern corner of CT, Western Mass. and Eastern upstate NY. There are so many artists in nearby Duchess County, music and theatre and art in the Great Barrington/Lenox area. CT has such beautiful hikes (The Appalachian Trail runs along the nearby Houstatonic River), fly fishing, great roads for motorcycle rides. And the pizza is unparalleled!!!

What makes this house unique

It's SO CLOSE to NY but feels SO FAR! It's a great balance of access to water sports and access to pristine nature. I get such a sense of peace and enjoy the nature and the community when I'm there. Tanglewood nights are so fantastic. The bike path along the Farmington River is exquisite. The weather is always so great there - even when it's unbearably hot everywhere else.

Loved the Ice House and Highland Lake

  • 4 of 5

So many beautiful moments in our week at the Ice House. Our dogs were so content and peaceful with none of the suburban distractions. And Mary Ann's home was well equipped with everything we thought we needed to pack for our vacation at a lake house. So glad it included all sorts of amenities. And what a wonderful time to spend sailing on the lake and getting acquainted with the other renters and homeowners. Happened upon Patrick at the local watering hole and had a great day with a renter Stephanie who helped us sail our boat down the length of Higland Lake and out of the water on the last day. We'll treasure our time spent there.

House in the woods

  • 3 of 5

We found the Ice House to be rustic with all the modern conveniences. The steep approach to the house and the dock were uncomfortable for older folks. Very private and a great place to walk the dog on the unpaved road.

Solace and Celebration

  • 5 of 5

I loved this space. It's a beautiful kind of funky... and clean. Every morning I drank hot tea on the deck, wrapped in a blanket in the brisk cold. In the evenings I lit a fire in the wood stove. The location of this house is both private and quiet, which was perfect for what I needed the space for... to prepare to defend my dissertation at the University of Connecticut. The lake is in walking distance and you can rent kayaks and bicycles along the Farmington River in the nearby town of Collinsville. In addition, the house is close to some of my favorite hiking in and around People's State Forest. I was out there for a couple of nights before my two sisters arrived and I felt completely safe and comfortable being on my own. If I needed any assistance, which I/we did on occasion, both Mary Ann, the owner, and John, who helps manage the place, were available to assist me asap! I never had to wait for a response, they were both very supportive and on top of everything. The space was equally spacious and enjoyable to share when my sisters arrived. The place has a desk upstairs, which was perfect for working, but it also has an impressive CD and DVD collection as well as an electric piano, which I played when taking needed breaks from studying. I will definitely return when I get the chance. Thank you for providing a lovely home and experience!
