Farmhouse on court yard, 2-4p, village near Atlantic ocean, 40 km NW of Lisbon

Bedrooms 2
Half Baths1
Space 1,184 sq. ft.
Property type farmhouse
Minimum Stay 1 - 6 nights

About the property

End 19th century farmhouse, restored, 4p, 2 bedrooms, 200 sqm private courtyard

The accommodation, a half hour drive from Lisbon, is a restored farm ('quinta') built at the end of the 19th century in the village of Zambujal. Zambujal lies on one of the coastal hills south of the sea-side town of Ericeira, between Carvoeira and the district capital, Mafra. The second picture, taken from the little square in front of the Casa Zambujal, shows (from l to r): the wine house, and behind the gate, the former cows' stable, the two storied main house (Casa Principal, sleeps 4 in two bedrooms) and, half-hidden by the yard wall, the former donkey stable. The 200 sqm yard is paved with Portuguese cobblestones and includes a small garden with a walnut tree, an olive tree, a laurel tree, grapes, roses and herbs. The place offers privacy with free WIFI all over. You can enjoy the quietude of a rural village reading a book or having breakfast outside. It serves perfectly as a base for exploring Lisbon, enjoying the many nearby beaches, visiting the surrounding historical towns, as well as for a surf holiday or trips to the golf courses in the area.

Downstairs is the living room of 20 sqm with a 2p-sofa, two leather fauteuils, TV and a wood stove. The equally sized, fully equipped kitchen contains a dining table and a cupboard and is separated from the living by a staircase leading to the first floor and a small toilet

Upstairs are the two bed rooms. One with a double bed, a wardrobe, a commode and a small bathroom-en-suite with shower, toilet and wash basin. The other bedroom has two 1-p beds and a wardrobe.

Outside, next to the kitchen is a sheltered sun terrace with a shadow. The farm house, Casa Principal, is situated on a court yard on which you are the only tenant and where you still have the disposal of an extra bathroom with shower, toilet, wash basin and washing machine in the Casa do Burro.

Every morning around nine 'o clock you can buy fresh bread at the bakery car that passes/stops in front of the house. In Mafra’s supermarkets (5 km) you find everything, for instance, a big variety of daily-fresh fish.

What follows is general info which might be useful for you:

(a) Lisbon airport has two terminals, the main one, no1, and terminal 2. When you arrive at no 2, a shuttle bus brings you to the main one with the car-rental offices.

(b) Many motor ways in Portugal are toll ways. There are two kind of toll ways:

(1) The 'Ticket' ones. By entering this type of toll way you drive into a toll gate with a bar (avoid the V-gates which are for members only). Press the button of the ticket machine; take the ticket and the gate opens. By leaving the toll way you pay cash or by card at the ticket-window or at the pay-machine.

(2) The 'Electronic' ones. Here you need a toll-card or vignet. Driving on this kind of toll ways (Elec) you pass now and then “electronic gates” which indicates the toll you pay automatically by credit card. The rent-a-car office might want to sell you a vignet which allows you to use these (elec) motorways. You also can buy toll-cards for this purpose at any post office. However, if you have no intention to go to the South or mid and northern parts of Portugal, you don't need a vignet or toll card

Please, have a look at the map on the following website:

It shows you the motorways where you can pay manually (ticket) and the (elec) motorways. The latter ones are concentrated in the South (Algarve) and the mid and northern parts of Portugal.

Along the Atlantic coast near Lisbon, 2500 km southward London or Frankfurt, prevails a pleasant warm marine climate with temperatures around 25 degrees from late spring to early autumn. Through the rest of the year the climate is mild with still a lot of sun hours. Have breakfast, lunch or dinner outside. Garden furniture is available as well as large long armchairs with pillows. At arrival you will check in with D. Rosario. The house will, in general, only be available from 4 o' clock p.m. She will clean the house once a week and provides clean linen and towels weekly as well. At departure you check out with her, and again, in general, not after 10 o' clock a.m.

Une super adresse dans une charmante maison !

  • 5 of 5

Fabulous vacation around Zambujal

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I spent 8 days in this wonderful Casa in the village of Zambujal. From the minute we arrived Willhem was very helpful and accommodating. Ever day we were able to get tips and advice from Willem on places to visit, roads to take and best beaches in area. The Casa was exactly what we wanted and exactly as it was described on the listing. Very quiet and very comfortable. Everything we needed was there; according to Willem we have Maria to thank for that. We enjoyed our touring of the region and especially enjoyed returning to a nice cool and comfortable casa each night. Highly recommended!!!!

perfect holidays

  • 5 of 5

Wynaj?ty domek (Casa Principal) w pe?ni spe?ni? oczekiwania naszej 4-osobowej rodziny. Na miejscu okaza?o si?, ?e przedstawiona w Internecie oferta jest rzetelna i prawdziwa. By?o czysto, przytulnie i stylowo (meble, sprz?ty, naczynia pochodz?ce z domów rodzinnych W?a?cicieli).

W pobli?u znajduje si? równie? kilka ?adnych (piaszczystych) pla?. Dojazd do Lizbony nie zajmuje wi?cej ni? 40 min. W sumie jest to miejsce godne polecenia.

The rented house (Casa Principal) fully met the expectations of our four-person family. After arrival it turned out that the online offer is fair and true. It was clean, cozy and stylish (furniture, appliances, dishes from owners’ family houses). The hosts were friendly and kind (they offered advice and assistance) while being unobtrusively. We will warmly remember farewell meeting with them - they invited us to his home.

Zambujal is a small quiet town, which advantage is in its location - it is a few kilometers away from Mafra, where there are restaurants, cafes (delicious coffee and cookies) and supermarkets. The main attraction in Mafra is the monumental Palácio Nacional de Mafra, built in the eighteenth century, which includes the monastery, cathedral, the royal palace and a library. Nearby the village there are also few nice, sandy beaches. Getting to Lisbon does not take more than 40 minutes. In summary, a place worth recommending.

Wonderful Relaxing Week

  • 5 of 5

From the start a warm welcome from Willem & Maria, they where so helpful and nice to a wondeful home the whole stay was perfect.

The farm house was very clean and well set out with every amenity that you would need,as an aspiaring chef (in my eyes) there was all you would need for a good evening meal, although the owners where on site the where unintrusive during your stay but willing to help at an instant if requested.

All in all a very nice stay with a very nice couple in a quite sleepy town but not to far away from nice beaches and sites of interest, Loved the mozzy net! sleep with windows open and not a bite EXCELLENT!! so book your stay you will not be disapointed at all.

Character farmhouse rental in Zambujal

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful two week stay at his character farmhouse rental in Zambujal. The accommodation was spacious, tidy and clean. Our host Willem and Maria were very friendly and really couldn't do enough to ensure are stay went perfectly. We had had access to Wi-Fi, which are 3 boys loved as they could keep in contact with their friends on Facebook and YouTube. We were only 10 mins drive from 2 fantastic beaches. Wonderful surf, fine soft sand, blue seas and fantastic scenery with picture book sunsets every evening. Mafra palace and Sintra are well worth visiting, lots of history to marvel at. If you want a quiet peaceful place to relax and recharge then this is the place to go.

Summertime early May

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed a great week in May 2011. Overall a very nice location with friendly and caring owners next door, who are always Open to help and support in any case. The house is tastefully renovated and furnished, without the "Burro" sufficient for a family with 2 children. For chilly days, 2 movable heaters are available. The Ocean is just some 5 Minutes away and we could even go into the water early May. To Lisbon center, its just 30-45 min by car (which you need in this remote place), a selection of big Supermarkets (open on Sunday!) within 2 minutes towards Mafra. We definitively recommend this place and would come again.

To Maria and Willem: Thanks a lot for this nice and relaxing week!

Foz de Lizandro,
Car: recommended

The village of Zambujal itself is very quiet. The house and courtyard face a little square, Largo Principal, where neighbours, some local cars and the mailman on motorbike pass. Within a 50 m you are in the hilly countryside with numerous hiking tracks. The nearest beaches are at10 minutes by car.

Nearby the house, along the local road that passes the village you find a small coffee-shop/snack-bar named FAGULHA. Most (little) shops in Mafra (4 km) are concentrated around the village square just in front of the Convento, a very large old monastery/palace. In the outskirts are several supermarkets (Continente, Pingo Doce, Modelo, Intermarche, Lidl), most of them open at night and on Sundays.

The village Zambujal is along the local road N549 between the town of Mafra and Carvoeira, another village at the coast. The new A21 connecting Malveira and Ericeira lies in the valley north of Zambujal and is neither visible nor audible from the courtyard.

Numerous hiking trails offer the possibility to explore the coastal landscape on foot.

Country roads connect to the Lizandro and Sao Juliao beaches (surf-schools) 3-5 km away and Ericeira (beaches, fish restaurants) is at 5 km. Excellent motorways will lead you for example, from Mafra to Lisbon-centre; by car in half an hour, Downtown Lisbon you could leave your car in one of the (underground) parking lots and continue on public transport (day ticket). You also can park your car next to one of the metro stations away from the city centre.

Another possibility is to take the bus In Mafra, in front of the Palace (every 50 minutes). In less than an hour you are in Lisbon centre.

The Sintra area (25 km to the south) is a world heritage site within a micro-climate zone with a famous Moor's castle build on top of an old volcanic rock formation. Here and further south you find 18-holes golfcourses and the more fashionable Estoril-Cascais beaches (35 km). To the north lies the centuries-old village of Obidos (50 km, as well a world heritage site worth visiting.

Apart from visiting nearby beaches, surrounding historical towns and Lisbon, other activities to consider:

(-) Horseback-riding centre in Gorcinhos (3 km), fully equipped, with possibility of instruction and out-riding

(-) Surfing is practiced all year round at nearby beaches as São Julião, Lizandro and Ribeira d' Ilhas (worldcup-tournament) and trips could include the beaches Lourenço, Santa Cruz further north. In Ericeira you find many surf shops.

(-) Explore the geology of creteaceous and jurassic formations along the beachcliffs in large outcrops rich in fossils and pay a visit the Dinosaur museum in Lourinha.

(-) 9 superb 16 hole golf courses are concentrated in the region around Sintra and north of Estoril and Cascais.

(-) South of Lisbon, on the other side of the river Tejo, you can visit national parks and nature reserves along the Costa Azul, such as Arrabida and the Sado estuary with its dolphins, flamingos and characteristic vegetation and landscapes.
