Converted historic schoolhouse. Huge great room with sitting area and dining area, TV and wifi. 3 bedrooms (2 full and one queen), two full bathrooms, fully equipped kitchen, central air conditioning, deck overlooking wooded area. Walk to restaurants, shopping (Walmart, Wegmans, Dept Stores), CMAC, Canandaigua Lake. Popular attractions are: many wineries in the area, Sonnenberg Gardens and Mansion, the water park, Canandaigua Lady sightseeing boat and dinner cruise. The city of Canandaigua has many local eateries and neighborhood bars where you will find the locals to be very welcoming. A wonderful farmer's market comes to the city center every Sat morning--find local produce, meats, baked goods and even hand made soaps.

The Schoolhouse is adjacent to Cedar Lodge, student housing, whose laundry room you can use.

This charming old schoolhouse is over 100 years old and has been completely renovated with new electrical, plumbing, central heating and air conditioning. The kitchen has new appliances. There is a gas grill on the deck. As one would expect of a schoolhouse, it is plain but imbues a certain charm. The high ceiling in the living area gives it a spacious and grand feeling. Original doors and moldings add to the historic character. No washer/dryer on the property but there is one next door at the Cedar Lodge and a Laundromat a block away. This is clearly not a boutique hotel, but a plain old house with modest but serviceable furnishings. There is an apartment below with a young couple, but they are quiet and won't disturb you. Their unit sits under your bedroom area and not the living/dining area. Each bedroom has a bed, desk, lamp and chest of drawers. The dining table seats six. The current furniture is a leather sectional and occasional chair, coffee table with two matching end tables, and TV.

The beds are made up with provided linens and sheets and towels are in the bathrooms as well as toilet paper and soap. The kitchen has dishes for 6, mugs, numerous glassware, coffee pot, toaster and microwave. The porch closet has an ironing board and iron, broom and dust pan. If there is anything lacking, the manager can probably help. In fact, we appreciate hearing from you if something is needed.

Why Owner Bob/ Manager Liz chose Canandaigua

I fell in love with the potential of the schoolhouse. It had fine old bones, a slate roof and beautiful original flooring. The location is terrific with walking distance to stores. It's in town but has a nice deck overlooking a creek and wooded area. I had it completely renovated with new heating and air conditioning, insulation, and painted throughout. It has a wonderful atmosphere. It was a Schoolhouse until the 50s and I can visualize the students working away under the tutelage of the school master.

What makes this house unique

Formerly a one room schoolhouse, it has a wonderful historical warmth and feel. It sits on a knoll and feels peaceful, surrounded by old growth hardwoods. Yet it is very close to everything one needs. Truly 'the chosen spot'.

Great place to stay

We stayed at this location for a concert last weekend. It is an easy walk to the show. House was very clean and easy to find. A lot of space inside and out. Checking in and out was quick and the staff was great. If we come to another show we will try to book here again

Perfect location for CMAC concert

We enjoyed our stay at the Schoolhouse. It was very spacious for 6 of us with two great bathrooms. Perfect for a concert CMAC. Very clean and charming. We thought it was a bit on the pricey side, however, and you had to go to a nearby hotel to pick up the key. We had to call to get the WIFI password.

House in the middle of a parking lot

The house itself was clean and comfortable. We didn't mind being by a busy street. The house had charm. Then one night we came back to the house and found it surrounded by cars parked all around the house. A man was holding a sign offering parking for $10 and directing them to park on the grass in the front yard and all around our car and house. We literally couldn't even step out the front door on to the grass because of cars parked there. There was a concert happening down the street at the local college. When we texted the manager she apologized for not letting us know that it was common for that to happen. At midnight when the concert was done, people were right outside my kids bedroom windows talking and laughing which scared them. Car lights were shining in the windows. Water bottles were found on the front steps the next morning. So if there isn't a concert or event happening, you have a decent rental. You are only renting the house and not the yards surrounding it. Apparently that is used to make more money as a parking lot.

Owner's Response: We are terribly sorry about the distress caused by the concert parking. We neglected to tell you about the popular CMAC concerts which are so important to our community and the fact that cars are parked all over the area for big concerts. Also we should have advised you that we only use the side door, never the front door. This year's parking was made more difficult due to loss of space incurred by the new sidewalk construction. This caused the parking to be pushed closer to the house. Most concert goers are respectful of others. We are sorry that you were disturbed by the exiting concert goers. in-town bedrooms, sparsely furnished

We stayed three nights, two of them with our son, daughter-in-law, and their two small children.

Positives: The bedrooms are quiet and well-separated from each other, and the shared dining and family room are excellent. The manager was very knowledgeable about events, places, and restaurants in town and made some good suggestions. It is a short and easy walk to the CMAC, where we attended a concert. Smoking Hot is a good barbecue place in town, with friendly service for families.

Things we wished we had known: It is very much in-town, and is not secluded at all. The parking lot is next to student housing at the community college. There is a Walmart and Lowes in a shopping center across the road. That actually was an advantage since the furnishings are quite sparse and very inexpensive. We brought our own towels and bed linens, but there were other things we assumed would be there and were not-- a broom and dust pan, dish towels, and a table to sit and eat on the deck. There was another family staying in the level below us, which surprised us when they came home late-- our noise probably kept them awake too.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your comments. I will revise the description to ensure that it is clear that is is an in town location. We have in the past not included linens to keep the costs down - we give renters the choice to bring their own. However, this coming season we will include them. I realize that the furnishings are not top quality, but we try to provide a clean and comfortable place to stay. I also will provide brooms, etc. We usually provide a complete kitchen, including tea towels, etc. The cleaning staff must have overlooked those items when checking that it was ready for rental. Schoolhouse stay in Canandaigua

We stayed here for a long weekend Thursday to Sunday. The positives are the fact that it's a private home that has 3 bedrooms and 2 baths with a large outside deck. It is not on the lake but very close and it is right across the road from a shopping complex where we bought supplies. The negatives are that it is very basic. I would have appreciated a night stand next to the bed and some kind of overhead light in our bedroom. All of the bedroom doors stuck so none of us could close our doors. If we did, it was extremely loud to open them and we woke everyone up. There were very cheap plastic blinds on the windows but no other coverings, so as soon as it was light out, it was too bright to sleep. We have rented many homes and condos and this one was just not what we are used to. Also, the living room furniture is so bad that it really needs to be replaced. My husband tried to sit in the recliner and it has absolutely no support. The foot rest got stuck in the up position and they had to work on it to put it back. I wondered about the quality of things and then found out that the house is rented to students in the winter, so it all made more sense. It is perfect if you are there for a short amount of time to sight see and don't plan on spending much time at the Schoolhouse. Liz is very friendly and easy to work with, though.

Walk to park along lake and bath house at swimming area. Schoolhouse located adjacent to Cedar Lodge student housing whose laundromat you can use. The quaint downtown area has many interesting shops. My favorites are: T Olivers for wonderful infused oils and vinegars & Uncle Sam's for beautiful antiques. Every Saturday there is a Farmer's Market one block off the main street. On first Sat of the month there is a Wine Walk to sample wine at downtown shops. Google downtowncanandaigua for current list of events.

Refundable Damage Deposit $300

All reservations require a $300 deposit which is in addition to the rent. After final inspection if the premises are not left in the original condition the required cleaning and/or repairs will be deducted from the $300 deposit. Linens (sheets and towels) are provided for 1 queen and 2 double beds. Pillows and blankets are provided. There is a $75 cleaning fee payable by cash or credit card upon arrival.

Owner's Cancellation Policy

  • 50% refund if canceled at least 7 days before arrival date.
  • 100% refund if canceled at least 14 days before arrival date.
  • Service Fee fully refunded on cancellations that qualify for 100% refund.
