About Ann Willis and Fred Willis

Ann and Fred Willis have lived in the Sarah Jane Clifford House (the main house) for 20 years. The Willises renovated the existing houses on the property, which included the main house and a carriage house, and built what is now a third house, the Sarah Clifford Cottage. The Willises have been in the real estate business since 1999 through their privately owned company, and have renovated several of their properties and built a country house on an island near Charleston. The Sarah Clifford Cottage has the distinctive characteristics of a Willis renovation: modern, uncluttered, clean-lined, high quality construction and finishes, and attention to detail.

Ann Willis and Fred Willis purchased this cottage in 1993

A Perfect Place to Stay While Visiting Charleston

  • 5 of 5

We'd planned a trip to Charleston last year, but it was cancelled because of Hurricane Matthew. In the category of "every cloud has a silver lining" (and those are serious clouds!), a benefit of this delay is that we didn't go to our originally booked hotel, but chose instead to stay at the gorgeous place! Situated on a quiet residential street lined with eclectic 19th century architecture, the cottage is a short walk to the great sites, restaurants (!!!), and shopping of Charleston. It is immaculate, comfortable, beautifully designed in a modern style, offers great privacy and quiet, and even has a gourmet-level kitchen equipped with excellent cookware and appliances. (We ate simple breakfasts and lunches here in and then had sensational dinners out.) There is a spaciousness to the property that makes it feel quite luxurious for two -- it's also a nice place just to hang out. Anne and Fred went out of their way to make our stay here easier, providing guidance on what to do and where to go, and could not have been nicer. They even put a delicious chocolate cake in the refrigerator for my wife's birthday, and Ann helped us get a reservation at one of the top restaurants in town! Bottom line: we have stayed at several VRBO or AirBNB properties over the years, and this one goes right to the top of the list.

This property is immaculate-like we were the first ones that had ever stayed. Everything you could ever need is available. Wonderful location for shopping, eating, enjoying all that Charleston has to offer. Ann and Fred are wonderful hosts. Will look forward to a return visit!

Historic Charleston and the Volvo Tennis Open

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I stayed at the Sarah Clifford Cottage during the weekend of the Volvo Tennis Open and we could not have been more pleased with our experience. This well-appointed two-story cottage with its contemporary interior was simply ideal for our stay. For those who enjoy cooking as we do, the kitchen was indeed gourmet. Likewise, the master bedroom suite was furnished with a very comfortable king bed, high quality linens, and ample storage space. Located in a quiet section of Charlotte St., the cottage is within easy walking distance of East Bay, Meeting, and King Streets. Ann and Fred were excellent hosts, responsive to our questions and offering an array of recommendations for enjoying the Charleston experience, including the Volvo Tennis Open on Daniel Island.

Modern elegance downtown

  • 5 of 5

We were extremely pleased with the lodging on this trip to Charleston. Owners are amazingly helpful and friendly, and the cottage is impeccable. Mid-century modern style and totally functional. Everything you need inside and just steps from King street and all that downtown Charleston has to offer. There's plenty of room for two and just a comfortable, beautifully styled cottage. Wonderful value. We happened to be here for the Cooper River Bridge Run and couldn't have pick a more convenient location. Plus the most amazing weather! We enjoyed it tremendously.

Great find and a wonderful stay

  • 5 of 5

This was our first VRBO and I'm worried we were spoiled by such a great experience! The house was impeccably clean and well maintained. The kitchen is well stocked for making meals. (Although Charleston's restaurants are so great it's hard to cook when you're there.) The house is well laid out and great size for two people.

The owners, Ann and Fred, are delightful. They were helpful to point out things to do and places to eat, and available to answer any questions we had about the house and city. They were very quick to respond or return a phone call, email or text. We could not have asked for better hosts.

I would gladly stay here again the next time we're in Charleston!
