A beautiful, lovingly restored 1912 house that we barged to Galiano Island from Victoria, BC. The house 1600 sq ft with 2 bathrooms and four bedrooms - 2 queen beds, 2 single beds, and one queen pullout sofa. The large main bedroom has a claw foot tub and opening skylight. The second main bedroom has its own walkout balcony where you can enjoy your coffee in the morning sun. A third bedroom has its own ensuite with another claw foot tub. The full kitchen is open concept with a bar seating area for 6 and a harvest table for 6, as well as a cozy wood burning fireplace. The living room has a large sectional couch, a gas fireplace, a piano and a door opening onto the large sunny deck, which has an outdoor gas fire pit and comfortable seating, a breakfast bar and barbecue. There is lovely hiking and biking out the back door and a short trail walk to the ocean sandstone beach. Plenty of wildlife including deer, eagles, hummingbirds, sealions, seals and river otters.

About Joanne Young
My husband and I live in North Vancouver but aways wanted a quaint farm house in the country as a retreat from city life. We have found that our busy lives and summers plans take us elsewhere and we decided that we wanted others to be able to enjoy our beautiful heritage home while we are away.
Joanne Young purchased this House in 2004
Why Joanne Young chose Galiano Island
This house has an interesting story. We moved the house by barge from Victoria to Galiano Island and landed it on a lot across the street from our property. In the photos, the other house on the barge is our only next door neighbour who also moved her house at the same time. It was early on a February morning when the barge arrived - what an adventure. As you can see, we have done a huge amount of work to lovingly restore this house, which dates back to 1912, to become a cottage retreat. When you return from your outdoor adventures, enjoy this warm and cozy cottage with a glass of wine around the wood burning fireplace in the kitchen or the gas fireplace in the living room. Two clawfoot tubs and stained glass windows add to the relaxing atmosphere. In the morning, enjoy your cup of coffee in the sun on the front balconies in this lovely tranquil setting. A large sunny deck on the side is the perfect place for a summer barbecue and to watch the eagles that have a nest across the road and the spectacular stars at night. Children and pets always welcome.

Quirky decor and layout.
Pluses: Quiet and large outdoors. Lots of sitting and relaxing space. Kitchen well equipped; laundry facilities; plenty of books, games, puzzles including football and air hockey in basement. Fans provided for all rooms - much needed as we had very hot weather.
Negatives: Desperately need screens on windows and at least one downstairs door. Difficult to keep cool as it was recommended not to leave window or balcony doors open because of the “fury critters” that take up residence if given the opportunity.
Need lock on down stairs bathroom.
Exterior is in need of a really good clean; I.e. back porch sitting area needs a good sweep.
Lack of plentiful water supply due to lack of rainfall made having a shower very difficult, not to mention the “sulphur smell”. In fairness, bottled drinking water was provided and appreciated.
Interior could also do with a more indepth clean, rodent droppings were found on top of fridge, and places like window ledges etc needed a wipe down.
Overall we really enjoyed our stay. There was ample room for our family, plenty of in house opportunities for entertainment; two tv’s with net Felix, although the internet was very slow.
Would definitely rent again, and recommend to others. Glad we were able to experience “Fireside Cottage”.
Great home for larger families.
This is a great character home to stay at if you have a larger family or group. We had plenty of room inside and out with all the household amenities required... bbq, espresso machine, kitchen tools and plenty of towels! Thank you very much.
We loved this beautiful heritage house! The house was fully equipped with everything we needed to make our meals. As a bonus there were puzzles and games, and plenty of comfy chairs both inside and out for reading and visiting. The house was clean and tidy with lovely bedding, fluffy towels and comfortable beds. The directions for everything were clearly laid out. We loved the peace and quiet, plus the hummingbirds were a wonderful treat. There were great trails to explore and the rock beach nearby was spectacular. We were a family of four adults, but we had plenty of room to have our friends over for lunch. I would stay here again if I am ever back in Galiano.
Beautiful location for a writing retreat
Our group (6 women) stayed at Fireside Cottage for four days for an intensive writing retreat. We loved our stay: the host was welcoming, the house was comfortable with all kinds of good indoor and outdoor spaces for us to work together, the kitchen was exceptionally well equipped, and the location near trails and shore was outstanding. We would recommend it to anyone looking for a peaceful (except for the hummingbirds!), expansive place for a group to work, walk, talk, and write.
A cute house close to the road with a busy walking trail behind. The house is well- stocked with dishes, towels, books, games and utensils. On a cold night you will stay warm by the wood fire or gas fire or electric baseboards.
Great Place for a Family Get -Together
This is a great place for a group to get together and just hang out. There are many rooms plus a lovely sunny deck and another outdoor sitting area. It was ideal for our family Thanksgiving dinner. Although there is no sea view, the place offers peace, seclusion and a sense of tranquility and, if your group is the focus, as opposed to sight-seeing or just watching the tide go in, then this cabin is perfect.
The beds were all comfy, lots of heat (propane and wood fire) for the chilly mornings and evenings, bottled water for those who dislike that distinctive Galiano water odour, and a well provisioned kitchen.
We were welcomed by a nice bottle of wine and a vase of lovely flowers - much appreciated!
This is a really nice place!
Galiano Island provides a beautiful peaceful retreat at any time of the year. Staying at the Fireside Cottage, on 5 acres of fields and forests, you will have full privacy, seeing only the occasional neighbour strolling by, and yet a few minutes down the road you will find the corner store, Hummingbird Pub, luxurious spa and high end dining at the Galiano Inn restaurant, as well as a quiet country golf course. There is a wine festival every summer on the island and year round artist tours. Montague Harbour Provincial Park offers beautiful kayaking and a protected harbour. A hike up Mount Galiano affords a spectacular view of the surrounding Gulf Islands.
