About Jennifer Rice

Craig and Jennifer have been in Hawaii for many years and on the Hamakua Coast for the past 5 years. We truly enjoy hosting people in our home from all over the world.

Jennifer Rice purchased this house in 2014

Why Jennifer Rice chose Hamakua Coast

Honokaa is a wonderful town filled with amazing history and lovely people. Waipio is an incredibly spiritual place and one of the most beautiful locations in the world.

What makes this house unique

We fell in love with this house because of its surrounding beauty and tranquility. It is a great location for a vacation as it is set back from the road and still very close and within walking distance to everything Honokaa (dining, shopping, movie theatre, etc.)

Notes:
Waipio's Piko Hale is a one minute walk to the quaint downtown area where you will find great restaurants and shopping; our small town even has a historic movie theatre. Piko Hale is situated in a more rural part of Hawaii and you may experience natural noises from coqui frogs and sometimes roosters in the neighborhood.

Welcoming Spot in a Walkable Town

  • 5 of 5

You immediately feel at home here. The owner has generously supplied cooking oils, many herbs and spices, and other pantry items that aid meal preparation. The house is quiet and attractive, and very comfortable. The back deck looks over a green yard and foliage to the water far down the slope. A movie theater, the library (with a shelf of second-hand books for 25 cents each), and grocery stores are within a short walking distance. Within a short drive one can reach the Waipi'o Valley. Waimea is a bit further. We liked choosing Honokaa as one of the three places we stayed during our visit, to minimize driving time and maximize our exploration of different environments.

Enjoyed our time in Honokaa

  • 5 of 5

This was a great little place to spend our vacation. A very comfy place that the owner has provided many extras to make the place as close to the amenities of home as possible. Like the description says, if the attached studio is rented then you will hear your neighbors but this was a small downside outweighed by everything else the place has to offer. The owner is incredibly accommodating and quick to respond to anything you may need, you won't find a more responsive and accommodating owner. Thank you Jennifer for such a great place to stay!

The house was perfect for our needs. It is in a beautiful private setting in the midst of a quaint town. The back porch was especially wonderful. Jennifer is very friendly and accommodating. We enjoyed our time here.

Comfy in a weathered and webbed sort of way

  • 3 of 5

Nice to have a VRBO where we could relax, cook and do our laundry. Beds were comfortable.

House is rather worn throughout. But we felt comfortable and at home there.

Being in town was nice (Not loud)

Just a walk across street to the grocery store and 2 minutes more to quaint down town with some nice shops and Grandma's Cafe! yum.!

Rustic, spacious cottage with the most wonderful screened in sitting room and a full kitchen

  • 5 of 5

If you are looking for a rustic, spacious cottage with the most wonderful screened in sitting room and a full kitchen, you have come to the right place. It could easily sleep 6. The super market and downtown are 1 block away. Café il Mondo had great pizza and salads with a local flair. The theater is run by the ER doc from the hospital—a labor of love. The Hamakua Jodo Buddhist Temple is up the hill. The memorial to Katsu Goto who was killed for advocating for sugar cane workers is at the beginning of the town. The Northern Hawaiian Education and Research Center is in town with a highly informed anthropology woman professor and a photo collection of cowboy families. Waipio Valley is a short drive. Take a wonderful day trip to Kapa’au, Kamehamela’s statue, Pololu Valley Lookout, and great local fish meals (at Gill’s Lanai). Don’t miss the incredible Hawaii Tropical Botanical Garden on your drive up from Hilo.
