About Betty and John Bonadeo

We are a family of six with four young children. We have enjoyed working on the cottage and making it a haven from our busy lives. We hope families will enjoy the cottage as much as we do.

Betty and John Bonadeo purchased this cottage in 2014

Why Betty and John Bonadeo chose La Jolla

We bought the property with hopes of expanding the cottage in the future. We have plans to add a second floor with observation deck, a roof top deck and maybe even a basement. In the meantime, we hope others will enjoy and relax!

What makes this cottage unique

The cottage is a restful escape after a day at the beach. Some of our favorite restaurants are nearby, many of them have great happy hours. A list of the best places with our reviews can be found in the cottage. If you'd rather stay back and cook in our well-stocked kitchen, the gas range is brand new.

We stayed at this lovely cottage for nine days over Christmas, 2014. The cottage was perfect for us and seemed much larger than what we had expected. It is decorated and furnished very tastefully, and the owners have done a great job emphasizing an at the beach/nautical theme. There are water views from the living room, bedroom and front porch. The two door access to the bathroom helps "traffic" flow and makes the place seem larger. The kitchen is perfect for "preparing" take out meals or meals from scratch. In fact, on Christmas Day, we cooked a turkey dinner with all the trimmings, just as if we had been at home.

The best thing about the cottage is its location, right in the heart of the village of La Jolla. It's a five minute walk down to the waterfront walkway and five minutes to the Valencia Hotel for a drink in its beautiful lobby lounge. Restaurants and retail shops are minutes away and Vons Grocery is just ten minutes up the street. You definitely do not need a car during your stay in the cottage. We even walked over the bluffs to La Jolla Shores. That walk has some of the most beautiful views of the Pacific anywhere in California.

The owners of the cottage, Betty and John, are wonderful, and responsive to all of your needs before and during your stay. Our Christmas in La Jolla was certainly memorable, thanks to having chosen to stay in their cottage.

Location!!!

  • 5 of 5

We had an amazing experience staying at this beach cottage. We had two adults and two small children so there was plenty of room. Betty and her husband even brought in a full crib and high chair for our youngest which was so convenient and thoughtful. It was a little warm when we arrived so on the second day, they installed a brand new AC unit. There is no need for a car with this location because you are right in the middle of everything, but if you need one, there is an assigned spot in a lot nearby. We will be back!!!!!

This is the perfect location.

Thank you for the wonderful memories. My family and I vacationed during Easter break from the East Coast and had the best time. The cottage was quaint and ample space for our 12 and 9 year old sons. We really enjoyed opening the windows to see and listen to the ocean each day. Right in the heart of the village, we were steps away for the beautiful shoreline and cones with the seals and then steps away from great restaurants and shops. Would love to return someday and highly recommend to all!

The cottage has all the amenities you could ask for and is very well maintained. It is in a perfect location to both enjoy the ocean and the town as it is just a few steps from each. The owners are very accommodating. We highly recommend staying in this cottage.

Perfect and snug little nest for two!

  • 5 of 5

It looked JUST like the picture, the view, the cottage, everything. It is a small apartment and I think we would have been stressed had there been more than two of us--but then that's a reflection on us. Everything worked. Everything we could need was supplied. We were comfortable in bed (and I loved waking to the sound of the Pacific), relaxed in front of the television in the evenings, and cooked entirely satisfactory meals. The washing machine was a big convenience and the dryer a bonus. So was the dishwasher. And John and Betty could not be more helpful or congenial hosts, from first email contact to final farewells.

The location is simply perfect. While one is only a couple steps from Prospect at the intersection of Girard and a minute uphill from the ocean, it's quiet and peaceful, in January at any rate. The parking space provided behind the bank is entirely convenient--and we often found free parking on Ocean just a block away. La Jolla hasn't changed much since I lived there in the 1980s. Surfers wait for waves, joggers jog by, and families stroll with children. The Vons moved a block and now fronts on Girard. Restaurants, bars, shops, boutiques, a plethora of ways to spend money abound. The sea lions are new. Yes, they are a little rank close up, but provide lots of photographic opportunities. As does the setting sun.

We had a daily routine in the village. I'm the earlier riser, would shower, dress, start the coffee and walk up to Von's (maybe half a mile?) to buy papers. I'd stop at the Girard Gourmet and Bakery on the way back to get raisin pastries and walnut buns. (If you're more a muffin kind of person, stop by the Brick and Bell on Silverado just off Girard. They looked amazing! We stocked essentials in the fridge and loved picking up vegetables, fruit and locally made cheese and sausage and the Farmer's Market that runs 9-1 Sunday mornings. During the days we strolled the cliffs, visited gardens and art museums in SD and LA, tried out a few restaurants. Oh, and we took photos. Lots and lots of them. Evenings I poured a glass of wine and cooked.

We have favorite places in LJ now. Along with Girard Gourmet we love Gelato Frizzante (worth a daily visit) and We Olive (both store and wine bar). We miss the old French Bakery that was in Bird Rock--a real bakery, a boulangerie, and a cheese shop would be an idea addition to the village.

Would we come back? In a heartbeat!

Mixed Experience

  • 1 of 5

Our nine day stay was a very mixed experience. The pluses were very responsive owners who immediately answered all questions and queries and a terrific location with respect to the town and the ocean.

This property is listed as being capable of handling four adults but I would caution anyone considering such a rental that four adults sharing the small, cramped bathroom would be taxing. We were two adults and that was more than enough. Two adults with young children would probably be OK. Also, while near the ocean, the beaches in La Jolla Cove are small and tend to be invaded in the early AM by sea lions. Some of these beaches are submerged by the tides at various times of day. If you are traveling to this destination with the intention of spending a lot of time on the beach each day there are, frankly, many other beaches we saw along the coast that are better. The beaches in the Cove are reported to be excellent for snorkeling, but I would not describe them as desirable for spending hours on end on the beach sitting.

The cottage sits along a pathway that leads down to the beach. As such, there is a fair amount of foot traffic going by at various times.

If renting a car, the RESERVED space (at least in our case) is a few blocks away. This was not a problem at all for us, but prospective renters should be aware of this.

The biggest problem with this property is noise. The cottage is backed by a restaurant whose garbage is picked up early and noisily in the early morning. Dumpsters banging. The worst noise problem, however, is the music coming from a club/restaurant nearby. On Friday and Saturday evenings the music plays until 2AM and my wife and I heard every piano note and drum beat! We tried closing the windows but that did not help. We donwloaded a white noise/sound app to our phone and played it at full volume but that did not help either. We would not stay at this location again given this serious issue. During our stay the weather was fine the first seven nights and near record high temperatures the final two. We had the windows open every night for circulation and fresh air. To stay at this cottage in the summer months without opening the windows would be unimaginable so any thought of trying to shut out the noise that way would not be acceptable...at least to us!! (And closing the windows would not help with the noise anyway.)

In the end, the experience was seriously marred by the problems cited.

Owner's Response: We have installed an air conditioner to allow guests to close the windows if they wish. We seldom have "hot spells" so close to the ocean, but we want our guests to be comfortable and free of any disturbances.
