About David Berg
4th generation Yooper with a love of the Hiawatha National Forest and the surrounding outdoors. I spend as much time possible exploring out my back door and find new and wonderful places every year. The Au Train River is one of the places we always take company for a relaxing paddle. It's a great summer tradition.
David Berg purchased this Cottage in 2014
Why David Berg chose Au Train
I live close by on Lake Superior and chose to purchase a rental property in Au Train because it is centrally located to many excellent outdoor activities and provides a serene experience with a touch of the old resort area feel.
What makes this Cottage unique
The river is at your doorstep and Au Train Lake and Lake Superior are only a mile away. Lake Superior is not popular for swimming since it is so cold, but the beach in Au Train is a very popular swimming area. When my dad was a kid in the 1930's he would hitch rides with his friends, standing on the car's running boards, to get to this favorite beach. This area also provides great paddling opportunities in the bay, river, or dozens of nearby inland lakes. Of course the big draws are pictured rocks and grand island, but there are so many things to do in any direction. Great hiking and biking (Marquette and Munising have many miles of great mountain biking trails), boating, fishing, birding, sightseeing, and in the winter skiing, snowshoeing, and snowmobiling. Never get tired of adventure here. On the other hand, it's also a great place to kick up your feet and relax.

Quiet well kept cottage
The cottage was not what I expected. It is was larger than I thought and the view was great. It was quiet and peaceful. the house was very well kept and very clean. It was not far from any of the things we wanted to do.
This was, without a doubt, one of the best places we have ever stayed. If you are looking for a place that provides peace in a beautiful and natural setting ... this is the place for you. The cabin had everything we needed, was clean and comfortable, and also very pleasing to the eye. The deck and small yard provided great views of the river and both were areas to sit comfortably while relaxing. We were able to rent a canoe just down the road and enjoyed the canoe trip immensely. I would definitely stay again and would recommend this cabin to anyone who is looking for a place to relax in nature.
This cabin is absolutely beautiful and in an amazing location. We loved our stay and would definitely visit again!
Great little house with access to a lovely river for kayaking
The property is as advertised. It was very pleasantly decorated and clean. And my favorite part -the two kayaks that come with the rental.
You can tell this property has been managed well and is cared for. The owner stopped by briefly and was friendly and helpful as well as responded to questions quickly by phone or messages within the VBRO site.
First the overall house set up. It is a little closer to the small two lane road then I would prefer but during the weekday it is quiet so not a problem. The front of the house looks quite plain - but the back of the house where it counts is set up great. Big wrap around type deck over looking the river (seating for 4 +) with stairs down to a small dock and additional seating area for 2 at the waters edge. Windows and sliding glass doors dominate the wall space overlooking the river - you can look outside through ceiling to floor windows all along the back - this includes the living room, master bedroom and the diningroom (set behind the livingroom but woods still viewable). The smaller second bedroom does not have a view.
The home is well set up and utilizes space well. Kitchen was stocked fine for us. Furniture in good condition and and met our needs. Seating for four throughout the house - 4 kitchen chairs, 4 deck chairs, 4 lounge/couch seats. The home has a wonderful master bedroom and a basic second bedroom. Two couples could vacation here together - but there would be a fight over the master bedroom. Parking easily for two cars or a car towing a boat.
Two kayaks are on the property. Life jackets provided. The catch is it would be really difficult to get them down the stairs. Once you get them down they fit on the dock - just tie them up in case a wind comes along. Two people could walk them the two blocks to the bridge but we put them in our van and drove them the two blocks. The river is an ideal kayaking river - clean, clear, cool, steady current but not fast, and a clear pathway so no getting lost. Mostly its all remote - the only homes were where we started and ended. There are spots for take out along the way at small beaches and at what appears to be a remote county park just for the kayaks. We also saw two rope swings and our kids tested one out. It's about a 3 hour leisurely paddle to the next take out (only a mile down the road). It can get busy on the weekends but on a Tuesday we only saw people a few people.
Kayak rental place next door if you need more kayaks/canoes.
Great place to stay close enough to waterfalls, and pictured rock yet far enough away from business of Munising. Very nice house with anything you should need. Back deck view, and river amazing. Owner very nice deposit refunded super quickly. Would Love to stay again.
Wonderful place to stay
My family and I had a wonderful time in the Au Train Area. This cottage was the perfect place to call home during our stay. Our boys enjoyed the Kayaks and even caught a few fish off the dock.
Au Train is a great base camp for the many regional activities available to tourists.
