House was great but not a private beach

  • 3 of 5

The house was awesome-plenty of room and great location on Scenic 98-right across from Camille's, an adorable quaint cafe that we got to know and love by the end of the week. However, I was VERY disappointed (and I must say a bit anxious) about the beach. I have stayed in several homes along the street and have never experienced the headache of having to ask people to leave my backyard everyday. The public beach access is to the right of it and touches the property....people would set up tents and belongings all over and we couldn't even see the beach from our home due to the high volume of beachgoers blocking our view. We even had to call the police one day because people would not get off our property! I guess if you want to trade having a nice home for no private beach, then I would recommend the stay at this property.

Owner's Response: Hi Kristi, We are sorry that having others on the beach created anxiety. As we mentioned to you, the public can access the beach 7ft from the waterline. Beach goers cannot infringe on the beach beyond that, so when that happens we can get the sheriff involved. We make a point not to promote as a private beach at this home so not to mislead. The home rests pretty high above the water line so has ample beach and view even if someone is on that 7ft section. We also provide complimentary beach chair service during the summer which no one else can sit in except the home's guests. Again, we are sorry, but glad you found the home awesome. The new owners are making nice upgrades!

We rented this for a family reunion in October. We have had great experiences with all of the homes that we have found here on VRBO except for this one. We needed something with MANY bedrooms and this fit the bill as my selection was limited but after I booked, I began to see all the negative reviews. I thought that some people are never happy, well until we experienced the house for a week and I became one of the unhappy renters. Here is a quick review of the rental:

-on the beach

-lots of bedrooms

-staff from Southern Resorts was awesome to our requests and complaints

-very rundown needs updating ( furniture very worn)

-bathroom on main floor had no lights or electricity that worked

-not enough silverware ( only for 11- the house is meant for more than that - this was corrected a few days after our complaint and thanksgiving meal that we needed these)

-gate to the beach was broken

-third floor door to outside was broke and had to be rigged to be used

-the bedroom on the third floor has a nest of pigeons living above it ( yes we heard everything including ruffling of feathers)

-third floor bedroom ceiling looked to be losing a few of the wood beams on it

-all bathrooms need renovated

-the carriage house garage doors ( 2) were locked and had no access to them- we thought there might be beach stuff there as the majority of the rental houses provide some sort- this was not the case

-the carriage house bathroom is awkward as the door hits the toilet

-it is right next to a beach access ( i didn't think this would bother me but it was an issue) noises at all hours, crowded beach ( and people will plop their stuff right in front of yours while you are sitting there)

-very overpriced for what you get ( i have rented just as big for nicer and cheaper)

So my recommendation.......stay away. There are better places to rent in destin for better prices.

Royal Beach Palace

This house has the potential to be very nice, but the upkeep of it is lacking. While everyone we dealt with was very friendly and responsive to our needs, the house overall was not as we expected. While the house was comfortable overall and fit our group of 14 nicely, the wear and tear of the property was evident and glaring at times. For the price that it costs to rent it, we were expecting a bit more. Writing and scratches/gouges on the walls, large scratches and tears on cabinets and damage to the inside of the refrigerator, with missing shelves/bins, were noticeable upon arrival. Refrigerator space and ice machines is lacking for a house that sleeps this many (although there is the apartment garage refrigerator, but that requires a hike outside and back in). Also upon arrival there was a lack of utensils and bowls for this size group - houses that we've stayed in previously always had enough of both for the amount of people it sleeps. There were also *minimal* (to none) measuring devices, making it difficult to cook at times. The grill had an empty gas tank which we had to request to be exchanged, and the grill itself was spotty in it's performance. All of these things were brought to the managers attention and were promptly responded to (except the grill performance which we just dealt with), but we expected those things to be ready upon check in. Finally, the pool ladder was broken and we were told it would be replaced midweek at check in, only to be told later near the end of our stay it couldn't be replaced while we were there (after having to ask about it first). The children in our group were able to still use the pool, but it made it difficult for the older adults in our groups to utilize it as well.

The pro to this house is the free beach set up each day, and of course the beach proximity itself. The house is right by the public beach access, but that wasn't ever an issue for our group. The chair and umbrella set up each day made our beach time really enjoyable, and ensured we had a spot on a crowded beach. Our group has rented several houses through VRBO in various locations and we've never had a complaint; several houses we'd go back to again. While overall our stay was pleasant, this is not a house we'd rent year after year. I understand now that if there's no reviews, it's hard to determine if you'll get the property that's equal to the amount of money you're paying.
