Please note, the nightly rate varies with the number of people staying this lovely home. Hale Wailani is an elegant home built with handcrafted quality and style, brilliantly designed for maximum outdoor living and gorgeous views of Mauna Kea, Mauna Loa, the Kohala Mountains and Waialea Bay from nearly everywhere in the house. With 3,700-square-feet over two stories (plus an additional 2,000-square-feet of covered lanai), this spacious house has four bedrooms, three baths, and two living rooms, making it ideal for larger gatherings of families or friends.

Situated at the top of a small, very private enclave, Hale Wailani is just a two-minute walk down a nearby foot path to a small, sandy beach decorated by nature with bleached driftwood sculpture against black lava outcroppings. It’s a stunning spot, perfect for snorkeling, sunbathing or enjoying shade and views of Maui and the Kohala Mountains. For the adventurous, you’ll also be just steps from the Ala Kahakai Trail, the pathway of the ali’i (royalty), and now part of the National Park Service Trail System.

Wailani at Waialea Bay is a masterpiece of site planning and house design, providing seamless open-air lifestyle, maximum privacy and spectacular views mauka (mountain) to makai (sea). Upstairs and down, there are breathtaking views of Waialea Bay, Mauna Kea, Mauna Loa and the Kohala Mountains.

On both levels of this two-story home, covered lanai run the full length of the house with multiple sliding doors providing indoor/outdoor living throughout. A graceful pool echoes the shape of the house, while rock walls shelter the grassy yard and the personal gardens of the master bedroom suite and first-floor guest bedroom.

Hale Wailani is just south of Hapuna State Beach, rated one of the best beaches in the world, and just north of the delightful beach community of Puako. Enjoy the peace and privacy of Wailani, along with proximity to world-class golf, dining and resorts.

At the front entrance of the home, you are greeted by Birds of Paradise, cobalt Blue Ginger and colorful Croton plantings, while songbirds lend a musical note to the tropical landscape. Inside, the elegant black-and-white kitchen has granite countertops, Samoan hardwood floors, a large pantry and breakfast table and chairs. Sliding glass doors bring the outdoors in, and inlaid-rock lanai matches the flooring of the full bath/powder room just off the kitchen.

A very spacious living/dining room provides views of the Pacific and the Kohala Mountains. Here, too, sliders open to the lanai, yard and pool, which are sheltered by a rock wall and tall gate. Choose to dine casually outdoors (a grill stands ready nearby) at the patio dining table or more elegantly indoors at the glass dining table. Wicker furniture with glass tops and island-style upholstery are attractive yet comfortable. A television and CD player and CDs provide entertainment. A mirror-backed credenza reflects the outdoors back into the room for an even more spacious feel. Décor includes artwork of Hawaiian culture and flora and fauna, such as the magnificent manta rays and delightful honu (sea turtles). Full-corner windows offer unobstructed views, especially great for wintertime spotting of visiting whales.

The first-floor master bedroom suite, with king-size bed and sumptuous upholstered chaise lounge, is decorated in soothing colors and Asian artwork and offers ocean and mountain views. There is a large walk-in closet. The master bath, privately situated next to a cozy lanai with torch ginger plantings, has high ceilings, a black-tile counter with companion sinks, and a toilet set apart by a pocket door. A huge walk-in shower/tub room is fully tiled with two showerheads—one for the taller person!

The downstairs guest bedroom also has a sliding glass door to a similarly private lanai, cleverly connected to--though separate from--the master lanai. Along with a king-size bed, the room offers rattan furniture and a large closet with a safe.

The second-story suite offers sweeping views of the ocean and mountains and beautiful sunsets. Another covered lanai runs the full length of the house, with sliding glass doors expanding the living areas throughout. Relax outside in lounge chairs or at the dining table for evening cards and board games. Or watch television in the living room, with plenty of seating in the large sectional sofa or on one of the tall queen-sized day beds which double as extra sleeping spots. Bookshelves provide a range of reading, including guidebooks and local culture. A charming secretary desk sits in the book corner for an inspiring spot to write letters and postcards back home. A convenient sink and mini-fridge make this a perfect, convenient suite for your teenage children, young-adult family or other traveling companions.

One of the two upstairs bedrooms has a queen-size bed plus two twin beds and a double closet. The other bedroom has a king-size bed, privacy from the living area, double closets and ocean and Mauna Kea views. These bedrooms share a bathroom with two sinks, shower/tub and toilet.

The views are lovely. The whole house worked very well for a family of 10. Plenty of towels for the beach and bath time. The home is excellent and very well stocked, especially the kitchen dishes, pans etc.

Amazing Family Vacation

Great sandy beach access. Nice, big, clean, quiet, beautiful home. The bedrooms were air-conditioned, which made the nights very comfortable. The rest of the house was a bit hot, but in a way that almost added to the charm of being in Hawaii. The ladies at 2 Papaya's were wonderful. It would be very hard to top this vacation.

Wonderful, spacious home in a fabulous location. The outdoor living space is so perfect you almost don't use the two indoor living spaces. Fully equipped kitchen and two refrigerators. Tons of beach towels and toys. 2 Papayas makes sure you are happy and have everything you need. Thanks for the recommendation of Lat 20 for paddleboards, made our fun complete. Close to one of the best beaches on the Big Island. We loved our vacation and hope to do again.

Perfect for a Extended Family Vacation

Hale Wailani was the perfect house for us! The location within a short walk of the beach was ideal. Beach 69 was the best beach on the Big Island for our grandchildren, and the abundant shade makes it great for grandparents as well. As an added attraction, the house has a pool which was an added attraction for the kids. Beautiful views and a comfortable home, what more could you ask for, and the Two Papayas staff is always available if needed.

Hale Wailani on Waialea Bay near Puako is a great house for a big or extended family. The beach, a short walk from the house, is perfect for little kids and snorkelers. Mary and the other Papayas are always there to help if needed.

Sunny beach, plus swimming pool, at luxury home.

This was our second year at Beach 69 near Puako, staying 8 nights over Labor Day weekend. Mary Fox and her staff at Two Papayas are the managers and are extremely helpful. This year we went a little more luxurious and it was worth it. The upstairs views of the Bay are gorgeous, with wide lanai running around the house for relaxing in the Island breezes. This coastal area is almost always hot and sunny. There is huge array of beach equipment: umbrellas, beach chairs, water shoes, snorkels, masks, children sand toys, kayaks. The house is on a fantastic beach with very light surf and perfect for small children. The beach is downhill on a paved path, about 5 minute walk -- very private during Labor Day period. It is smooth sandy walk into the water in most places. The beach is about 1/2 mile long around the small bay. Also, there are a lot of snorkeling options around rock formations in the Bay and around the ends of the beach. The house is a wonderful place for our family of eight, including two small grandchildren ages 8 and 2. It was especially nice to have the pool for the two year old to practice his newly developed dog-paddling skills (not possible at the beach). Also, the eight-year old had a ball getting in the pool water after and before the trips to the beach. The pool area is usually shaded and therefore comfortable after a sunny day on the beach. The house was perfect for us, very large bedrooms and baths; and spacious living rooms upstairs and down; and large kitchen and eating areas. The house is perfectly equipped with all the most modern appliances, including electrically lowered shades when sun was too strong in the late afternoon. Beautiful teak floors and large dining room and patio tables for sumptuous meals. There are many nice restaurants in the north coast, including the family-friendly Blue Dragon which has live music 4 nights a week and is not to be missed. We also hired an excellent private chef recommended by the property manager's concierge for two of our nights eating-in. Everyone appreciated not having cooking duties. In our previous year at this dream-beach, we nevertheless sought adventure by driving all the way over to the Kilauea volcano in Volcano National Park, to hike around a rare active volcano. This year we drove up to the top of Mauna Kea (13K feet) to see the sunrise and it was only 40 minute trip. That's right: from beach to 13,000 feet in 40 minute drive. Breath deeply!
