About Jan Anderson

I have lived in Kapoho for 35 years, own a landscape and orchid farm, raised a family here and feel grateful to share the beauty of this areas, in a more natural and peaceful atmosphere of simple living.

Jan Anderson purchased this cottage in 2000

Why Jan Anderson chose Kapoho

I watched the 'Pond House' being built in the 80's because I lived across the street. I always liked it because it had a large tidal pond in the front yard and a 300 acre undisturbed property behind it. The house itself was built in a way to have light and air and the beauty of nature be part of every room in the house. I have enjoyed furnishing and decorating the 'Pond House' so it feels like an intimate, easy going, get away.

What makes this cottage unique

My cottage has the feeling of 'old Hawai`i. Sitting or laying down in the screened lanai, you are surrounded by nature, looking out onto a tidal pond, hearing the open ocean waves and watching palm trees catching the wind....very peaceful.

Plus, it is very easy to go from the house, down a trail to the open ocean tidepool area, for snorkeling, catching a sunrise or just exploring!

The home was a reflection of the owner. We all felt the same that we were welcomed there and it was warm and comfortable. We wished we had one more day and night..we plan to return.

Owner's Response: Mahalo for coming to Kapoho, to my 'Pond House', to finding peacefulness in the surroundings and closeness to the ocean...always a refresher for me. I hope you will come stay again...and as you say...give yourself a few days to just relax and enjoy. Aloha, Jan

Perfect for Our Family Vacation!

  • 5 of 5

Our family of five (two parents, three young adult children) had a wonderful stay at the Pond House. It was well supplied with what we needed and the addition of the guest house meant we could get away from each other when necessary. The nearby town of Pahoa has some good restaurants and also a market (we cooked a lot of our own meals) and other services. The Kapoho Tide Pools are only steps away from the house, so you can have an adventure without driving anywhere. The setting of the house is incredibly beautiful and peaceful. The owners obviously take pride in the property and they were also extremely kind to us when we needed some extra help.

Owner's Response: It is always our desire to try and help our guests have a relaxing, enjoyable and memorable stay at our 'Pond House" and learn a little more about Hawaii while they are here. We enjoy talking story about Hawaii and what Hawaii has to offer in it's natural beauty and local culture. Whether it be swimming with the tropical fish in the tide pools a few steps away, a guided trip to our nearby orchid and palm nursery, experiencing Volcano National Park activity or just laying back, on the daybed on the screened lanai feeling the tropical breeze, guests have gone home with a smile. We live five minutes away, therefore close enough to be helpful if needed and yet far enough away to give our guests the privacy they want in a cottage by the ocean. Each guest is special to us and it is our pleasure to be able to share our aloha with them. Mahalo (thank you) for thinking of us.

Darling and peaceful

  • 5 of 5

This is my second stay with friends at the Pond House. We live on the other side of the Big Island and enjoy coming to Kapoho as a "staycation". This adorable house is comfortable and well-appointed, and just steps away from the famous Hot Ponds snorkel area! Jan does a great job with the house. It's nicely decorated, clean, the beds are comfy, and she left us more than enough extra beach and bath towels. The kitchen is large and has everything needed to whip up a fine meal. There was plenty of hot water for showers. There are powerful overhead fans in each room, plus a standing fan in each bedroom We enjoy hanging out on the screened lanai (patio) overlooking the property's private pond. The two kids in our group got a kick out of sleeping here on wicker daybeds. We highly recommend Jan's Pond House and look forward to coming back soon. It's a great base for exploring all of the wonders on this side of the Island.

As a side note, this is the tropics, people! If you've come to Hawaii before and never encountered heat, bugs, or geckos, I will bet that you stayed in a major resort where they spray the grounds and rooms daily with pesticides, blast the AC, and offer fruit infused ice water at the pool. I'm not knocking it. If that's the experience you are going for, then by all means stay at the Marriot, Hilton, etc. THIS IS NOT THAT! This is someone's house, for real.

It was a lovely quaint home in an incredible location. We spent some wonderful time on the lanai reading books and listening to the surf. And time in the tide pools was superb!

Owner's Orchid and Palm Nurseries tours.

This whole lower Puna area is abundant with nature at it's finest. It is rural and therefore not crowded, so you can enjoy peaceful, ocean, tropical experiences. Watching the sunrise over the ocean tide pools is a favorite as well as relaxing in the immense naturally heated geothermal hot pond down the road. The old highway from Kapoho to Kalapana is one of the last old roads that lead you through tunnels of tropical trees and foliage while you drive along the coastline of beautiful ocean waves.......truly memorable.
