About Jan Anderson

I have lived in Kapoho for 35 years, own a landscape and orchid farm, raised a family here and feel grateful to share the beauty of this areas, in a more natural and peaceful atmosphere of simple living.

Jan Anderson purchased this cottage in 2000

Why Jan Anderson chose Pahoa

I watched the 'Pond House' being built in the 80's because I lived across the street. I always liked it because it had a large tidal pond in the front yard and a 300 acre undisturbed property behind it. The house itself was built in a way to have light and air and the beauty of nature be part of every room in the house. I have enjoyed furnishing and decorating the 'Pond House' so it feels like an intimate, easy going, get away.

What makes this cottage unique

My cottage has the feeling of 'old Hawai`i. Sitting or laying down in the screened lanai, you are surrounded by nature, looking out onto a tidal pond, hearing the open ocean waves and watching palm trees catching the wind....very peaceful.

Plus, it is very easy to go from the house, down a trail to the open ocean tidepool area, for snorkeling, catching a sunrise or just exploring!

Perfect for Our Family Vacation!

  • 5 of 5

Our family of five (two parents, three young adult children) had a wonderful stay at the Pond House. It was well supplied with what we needed and the addition of the guest house meant we could get away from each other when necessary. The nearby town of Pahoa has some good restaurants and also a market (we cooked a lot of our own meals) and other services. The Kapoho Tide Pools are only steps away from the house, so you can have an adventure without driving anywhere. The setting of the house is incredibly beautiful and peaceful. The owners obviously take pride in the property and they were also extremely kind to us when we needed some extra help.

Owner's Response: It is always our desire to try and help our guests have a relaxing, enjoyable and memorable stay at our 'Pond House" and learn a little more about Hawaii while they are here. We enjoy talking story about Hawaii and what Hawaii has to offer in it's natural beauty and local culture. Whether it be swimming with the tropical fish in the tide pools a few steps away, a guided trip to our nearby orchid and palm nursery, experiencing Volcano National Park activity or just laying back, on the daybed on the screened lanai feeling the tropical breeze, guests have gone home with a smile. We live five minutes away, therefore close enough to be helpful if needed and yet far enough away to give our guests the privacy they want in a cottage by the ocean. Each guest is special to us and it is our pleasure to be able to share our aloha with them. Mahalo (thank you) for thinking of us.

Great location. However satellite TV did not work the whole week we stayed.

  • 3 of 5

TV was big issue....what if a tropical storm was approaching? Called owner she advised she was not on the island, maybe her son could come and check out problem. Never saw him at property.

Owner's Response: I am sincerely sorry that guests of mine were inconvenienced and unhappy that the satellite TV did not work during their stay. Of coarse any emergency information is always available by radio and our neighborhood watch program. This rare time, I was out of the Burma...with sketchy technical correspondence...resulting in a no show to fix the TV situation. if my guests decided to return for a stay someday...they deserve some credit to come their way

Spacious home, amazing location

  • 5 of 5

The Pond House was the perfect weekend home for our group of 4 during a recent visit to the Big Island. The Pond House met all of our needs; spacious accommodations steps away from the beautiful Wai'opae tide pools and about a 30 minute drive to Kalapana to see the lava flow. We would definitely stay at the Pond House again and would certainly recommend it to friends and family looking for peaceful getaway. Thank you Jan for being so responsive to our questions and for being so accommodating. We hope to stay again in the very near future!

Great location, Cool, Unique, and full of Geckos, their poop, and Millipedes

  • 3 of 5

This house was fun but it was a little run down. It is a fair price, though, given location, and sleeping capacity. The kids LOVED the tide pools, the "pond" and its inhabitants. We loved the location, getting to Hilo or the Volcano park was a cinch. Jan and her husband were out of town, so her daughter opened it up for us. It was hot and stale in there, but we cooled on the comfy lanai. I think my daughter slept there the first night. My wife had a millipede crawl across her and she brushed it in her sleep. Shortly after she woke up in a discomfort and had a blister swelling on her neck. I got one on the face and wrist. It really was a pretty mild blister, looking worse than it felt. The beds were not comfortable, and it was hard to sleep knowing we could be "attacked" by millipedes in our sleep. For the cost, uniqueness, and location, I would give it 4 stars, but have to knock it down one due to bugs and the beds.

This property was perfectly suited for my friend and I. Not too fancy but very comfortable meeting all of our needs. Plus, Wai'opae tide pool was only a few steps from our door...absolutely stunning! Thank you Jan for making our stay truly an unforgettable one!

Owner's Orchid and Palm Nurseries tours.

This whole lower Puna area is abundant with nature at it's finest. It is rural and therefore not crowded, so you can enjoy peaceful, ocean, tropical experiences. Watching the sunrise over the ocean tide pools is a favorite as well as relaxing in the immense naturally heated geothermal hot pond down the road. The old highway from Kapoho to Kalapana is one of the last old roads that lead you through tunnels of tropical trees and foliage while you drive along the coastline of beautiful ocean waves.......truly memorable.
