About Jan Anderson

I have lived in Kapoho for 35 years, own a landscape and orchid farm, raised a family here and feel grateful to share the beauty of this areas, in a more natural and peaceful atmosphere of simple living.

Jan Anderson purchased this Cottage in 2000

Why Jan Anderson chose Kapoho

I watched the 'Pond House' being built in the 80's because I lived across the street. I always liked it because it had a large tidal pond in the front yard and a 300 acre undisturbed property behind it. The house itself was built in a way to have light and air and the beauty of nature be part of every room in the house. I have enjoyed furnishing and decorating the 'Pond House' so it feels like an intimate, easy going, get away.

What makes this Cottage unique

My cottage has the feeling of 'old Hawai`i. Sitting or laying down in the screened lanai, you are surrounded by nature, looking out onto a tidal pond, hearing the open ocean waves and watching palm trees catching the wind....very peaceful. Plus, it is very easy to go from the house, down a trail to the open ocean tidepool area, for snorkeling, catching a sunrise or just exploring!

                                                        Paul G.Canada

50 feet from the tide pools which were the best snorkeling we had on the island by far (including the captain cook snorkeling tour). The house was way more room than we needed for three and could easily host 6 which would have been fun. Our host Jan was great and a long time resident. she shared a little of the history of the house and the area which we liked. We only stayed 2 nights, but would have been a great place to chill for a couple more. Loved sitting on the porch after a snorkel with a beer. Watching the gekos. Hilo and the Kalapana Lava hike were not that far and could be driven easily. Thanks!

                                                        Loved it

                                                        Theresa L.

Although the weather didn’t cooperate for getting into the tide pools, we didn’t mind. We walked around. We should have stayed longer! Nice location, pretty private. The bed wasn’t too comfortable but the rest of the cottage was geeat

                                                        Perfect spot for a family

                                                        Sarah

This was a perfect spot for our family. The tide pools were just about 100 ft from the house with easy access. The kitchen was stocked with all the dishes, pots and pans for us to make great meals. There was a washer, dryer and clothesline- a must with a toddler! The porch was a favorite gathering spot. It was a perfect place for a family, because it was easy to go to the tide pools for even a small amount of time- and others could stay back. Took about an hr to get to the caldura at Volcanoes. Nice back yard for BBQ and relaxing. We loved our visit and would stay again.

Clean and comfortable, perfect location right by the tidepools. The kitchen was well equipped.

We had a lovely time exploring the area (it didn’t hurt that the weather cooperated).

                                                        Great location

                                                        Shannon H.

Jan was very helpful prior to our trip and during our stay. She was available for any questions we had. Great location. Beds were comfortable. We didn't have problems with anything. There are geckos, as you see everywhere on the island, but they don't bother you. I definitely recommend you use bug spray with deet when you are outside. The attached cottage is more "rugged" than the house but is a great value so you cannot complain. We spent most of our time on the lanai.

                                                        Owner's Response:

Hey...mahalo for coming to stay at my Pond House and lovin' nature. Those gechos can be so entertaining. The tropics are all about living with nature...but I know sometimes, for some people the 'mossies' can be pesty .Getting into the ocean tidepools, a couple hundred feet away, is a reason to be there...its all good...aloha

                                                        Quiet and secluded

I treated my teenage grandchildren to a stay at the house. We had a great time and they had a blast snorkeling. Jan was very accommodating and friendly. mahalo!

                                                        Location

                                                        Kapoho, Puna District, HI, USA

Owner's Orchid and Palm Nurseries tours. This whole lower Puna area is abundant with nature at it's finest. It is rural and therefore not crowded, so you can enjoy peaceful, ocean, tropical experiences. Watching the sunrise over the ocean tide pools is a favorite as well as relaxing in the immense naturally heated geothermal hot pond down the road. The old highway from Kapoho to Kalapana is one of the last old roads that lead you through tunnels of tropical trees and foliage while you drive along the coastline of beautiful ocean waves.......truly memorable.
