About David Donnenfield

I am a dentist by day and a mom to three teenagers, 19, 18, and 17 years old by night (OK by day too). I am on a quest for knowledge in the area of health. I consider it my job to assist people in becoming healthier, starting of course in the mouth. I have a fabulous husband who is my partner in life. He is as passionate as I am about educating and engaging people, but in his field of media production. He is a nature and animal lover and tells stories with visual video, about restoring the earth amongst many other topics. We love to travel and explore other cultures. We love to learn. I am a learn by doing person and David is an avid reader. We both enjoy yoga. I run and David rides his beloved bike. We have one child in College, one who is a cello player and one who is attempting to go professional in ballet. We are excited to embark on this adventure together of offering a beautiful haven for people (and their horses) to explore this magnificent terrain and reconnect with nature.

David Donnenfield purchased this house in 2001

Why David Donnenfield chose Yosemite Area

Our main home is in the San Francisco Bay Area, but had been coming to North Fork because our meditation center is located there. The more time we spent in the area, the more we loved both the location and the people. It's a very small town, and people are very caring and helpful towards one another. In fact, we thought we might like to bring our children up there, which ultimately didn't happen. But we found this beautiful property and fun, appealing house with a barn, and couldn't resist.

It's in the mountains, but not so high (2800 feet) that we get much snow to speak of during the Winter. It's sort of a gateway to the backcountry and higher elevations. There's lots of wildlife around, like deer, fox, quail, coyote, and hawks. And when it's not as dry, there is a seasonal creek flowing the length of the property. We have several towering Ponderosa pines that I never tire looking up at.

So, it's a beautiful mix of cleared, developed land and natural, wooded land. We love going there for weekends because it's lovely, peaceful, and a complete change of pace from our hectic lives in the city. Soon, we'll put in a fruit tree orchard to add to both its charm and the ability to live more off the land. It's been a joy to improve the structures and landscape while still taking time to enjoy the place. It will be fun to share this special place with others who can appreciate its charms.

What makes this house unique

The two-story log house is very unique, with a wood-burning stove, a balcony overlooking the large living room, and a pine wood cabinet kitchen. Then there is the large covered porch big enough to accommodate two dining tables and chairs. It's a perfect place for outdoor dining and just hanging out. It all makes for very comfortable living.

It also has a barn and corrals within view from the house. This means that we can accommodate horses and their riders. Two local horsewomen have written guide books for taking day rides into the nearby back country. So, our property is the perfect staging place for horse people interested in experiencing the mountains on horseback.

I love walking around on the 11 acres, particularly in the early morning. It's serene and fresh, with birds chirping and maybe a deer or two nibbling the grass. It starts my day feeling inspired.

Guestbook comments from the manager

Thank you for the beautiful experience at your lovely home. Your five bedrooms with lovely living and dining space made for a memorable get together for our group of friends. We were impressed with your collection of games. We enjoyed cooking and gathering around the living room.

You are very kind hosts! Your set of instructions niftily placed around the house gave us hints on how to use the facilities. You've thought through everything vacationers might need.

Thank you for making so many memories.

Notes:

With our barn and corrals, we can comfortably and safely hold as many as 10 horses. Two local riders who have written guidebooks on riding in the central Sierra Nevada range are available for advice and even to accompany on rides. Meanwhile, the house is large and very comfortable, with a rustic ambiance. But, all the amenities are provided, with coffee and popcorn makers, a large flat screen monitor/surround sound/BluRay player, plus Apple TV to stream programming. A large outdoor BBQ allows you to cook up your favorite dishes and share them with everybody out on the veranda that's set up for dining with two tables and plenty of chairs. Everyone loves the character of the log house and the way we have populated it with near-antique furnishings.

Large, peaceful gathering place

  • 5 of 5

Our group of nineteen divided ourselves between this cabin and a small one nearby for a long weekend and family reunion. We enjoyed ourselves immensely in the peaceful and quiet setting at the end of an unpaved road; it was very peaceful. The beds and bedding were very nice, and the gathering areas inside and out were appreciated, though we didn't eat outdoors because of wasps.

Some people played bocce ball, and the children enjoyed the tire swing (can't remember which cabin that was nearest to). The weather was not too hot, so we enjoyed the breezes coming in the many windows, but we did use the swamp cooler one afternoon, too. We made good use of the barbecue and kitchen and even the washer and dryer.

We were in the area to attend a wedding closer to Yosemite, and some of our group spent time in the park, some at Bass Lake. And all of us enjoyed just hanging out at Backcountry Haven.

David was very easy to work with and was quick to respond to queries. This was my first experience renting from HomeAway and it was a good one.

Cozy retreat

  • 5 of 5

Staying at Backcountry Haven was a great retreat for our friends getaway. We all wished we had reserved it longer than 2 nights, way too short. The owner was extremely helpful in giving tons information and suggesting different things to do in the area for the hot summer days. The home was extremely spacious and cozy and provided the perfect getaway close to Yosemite. We only wished we stayed longer to benefit from visiting Yosemite and the near by lake.

sweet cabin for a getaway in the mountains

  • 5 of 5

What a wonderful property! Spacious, very clean and lots of lovely outdoor space to enjoy. Our hosts decorated for Xmas which was great as we were a little sad we weren't able to bring our own cheer - theirs turned out way cuter than we would have done! And the presents left under the tree were so sweet - thank you!!!

Loved: Quiet spot with trees, comfortably sleeps 2 to a bed + 2 bunks. Easy directions on how to use everything and keep it working well - loved the recycling area too. Lots of general supplies in case you forget something - nice touch! Apple TV was perfect for the tech-starved (HA!) kids and there was room for the adults to relax. Bedrooms had dark shutters which was great as the snow outside makes everything real bright in the morning! Wood fireplace was toasty (but it does get a wee bit chilly in other parts of the house). Fluffy towels (YAY) were splendid! We called our hosts once and they were totally available to answer our question about the wifi. Lovely time, with meticulous foresight to all details by the hosts!

Only thing that was a bit tricky was sharing 2 bathrooms between 9 people (7 guys) - the downstairs has a stand alone clawfoot tub without a curtain. It does have a spray nozzle if you are a careful bather but most in our party preferred to wait for the upstairs enclosed shower which took more time. I only mention it as a minor detail to plan around in what was an overwhelmingly great time. I'll certainly be booking in here again - it was top notch! Thanks a million!

Awesome big home

  • 5 of 5

We loved the big house. Very well equipped with everything you need from utensils to spices. The rooms were just too comfortable with everything, just too clean and perfect. There were lot many board games to play. The fire place was just too great, though we didn't get a chance to use to as it was a pleasant weather. Our dog loved to go out and roam around, it was just too safe. The area was well fenced with plenty of room for the dog to play around. We were able to spot one dear. :) The owner was just too nice and felt us at home. On our welcome we received a small basket full of chocolates. We loved the place, it was just too clean and big enough. We would certainly like to come back and spend some more nights here..

Amazing family vacation

  • 5 of 5

We had a fantastic vacation with our adult children and their significant others, 10 in all. The house and the location were perfect. Close enough to Bass Lake and Yosemite for frequent day trips, yet nicely private. The little town of North Fork is very friendly. Be sure to visit The Buckhorn Lounge! The home is beautiful with plenty of space to allow for some privacy with large common areas to "hang out" together. The kitchen and dining area are large and allowed for everyone to help out as needed and to sit together at dinner or later for our many crazy card games. The deck is great as well and we all enjoyed the amazing sky at night with more stars than can be imagined, away from the city lights.

Both the property manager and the property owner went out of their way to make sure our stay was great!

Owner's Response: Kathryn, Thanks for your gracious review. You and your group were a most unflappable bunch. Even in the face of some unforeseen adversity, you displayed great patience and good humor, and we appreciate that very much. We're so glad that you and your family were able to spend quality time at our place and enjoy one another in this very special setting. Please plan to come back again.

Excellent stay!

  • 5 of 5

If you're looking for a warm, comfortable place to stay during your trip to the Yosemite area, Backcountry HEAVEN has everything you need. Nature and animal lovers who enjoy privacy will fall in love with the property. Our family of 12 loved our stay and already began to entertain the idea of coming back after just the first night. Walking from room to room, we were continually impressed by the owners' smart attention to detail. We were so comforted by all the thoughtful and earth/health conscious touches. Everything from the placement of instructions to the provision of board games and activity guides put us at total ease which made our time together all the more special. Thank you, David and Suzan for such a wonderful stay in your beautiful home.

P.S. Prior to booking, we were looking at several options. The easy communication with David who promptly and kindly answered all my questions made it easy to make our decision. In the weeks leading up to our stay, David even sent along a guest packet with directions, instructions, and activity guides. Needless to stay, the hospitality was felt from the very beginning.

45 minutes from the south entrance to Yosemite National Park, our home is an authentic 5-bedroom log house that can sleep as many as 14 people. There is a wood-burning stove and claw-foot tub that adds to the rustic ambiance. Relax with our large flat screen and surround sound entertainment system that features BluRay and Apple TV. Cook up your favorite dishes on the outdoor BBQ and enjoy the warm evenings on the covered deck/veranda.

There is also a barn and six corrals for horses. Although the structures sit on eleven lovely acres of pine and oak, the best riding is in the nearby Sierra National Forest. There is ample parking for horse trailers and trucks. Two guidebooks by local horsewomen provide lots of advice on specific rides and how to enjoy them.

There are many other activities and sights in the area beginning with Yosemite National Park. The south entrance to the park is only forty minutes away, while the Valley itself is only an hour and a half away. There is golfing at Wawona, hiking throughout the park, birding and wildlife observation, and skiing at Badger Pass in the Winter months. And be sure to bring your camera.

Nearby Bass Lake (15 minutes away) has water sports including boating, kayaking, jet skis, swimming, etc. There are also fine restaurants and shops, with full services in nearby Oakhurst. Oakhurst also has terrific antique stores.

If you enjoy cycling, there are wonderful road rides, including the Scenic Byway. And of course a never-ending supply of off-road opportunities for mountain bikers. Local streams and lakes offer fishing, while hiking trails can take you into the wilderness within minutes from our place. Maps are available through the U.S. Forest Service. The Bass Lake Ranger District Office is located in North Fork.

The National Scenic Byway passes within a mile of our property. This is a one-hundred-mile road trip that takes you past spectacular views of the central Sierra Nevada mountains range. It begins right at the turn-off to our property. Mammoth Pools is one of several campgrounds and picnic areas along the By-way.

North Fork is home to the Sierra Mono Museum, a local Native American museum and cultural center. There are exhibits, language preservation, a large collection of exquisite basketry, artwork and artifacts. It hosts a Pow Wow and fair in early August.
