About Robert and Cathleen Olson

'German Haus' was built in 1975. The design came from a picture of a German house taken by my brother while he was stationed in Germany. Being of German heritage, I was interested in visiting the 'Old Country' and did so on three occasions. To my delight, I found many homes that resembled the one we had built in Fredenberg.

Robert and Cathleen Olson purchased this house in 1975

Why Robert and Cathleen Olson chose Northeast

This home is nestled between two lakes-one that is part of a large reservoir and a much smaller one that is perfect for canoeing or kayaking. The home sits atop a hill that allows the occupant to see across the marsh and out to the lakes on either side.

The long, private driveway leaves the road sounds behind and deer, grouse, and other wildlife can be seen meandering throughout the day.

What makes this house unique

Walking, hiking, biking, fishing, boating, and swimming are all accessible from the property, and in the winter months, snowmobiling, ice skating, ice fishing and cross-country skiing are the sports of choice.

The warmth of the fireplace on a cold winter's night brings comfort and joy to the residents as they look out the many windows to see a host of tall standing birch trees.

Feel a sense of times past as you sit by the old wood cook stove and sip your freshly brewed cup of coffee.

A small country store is just a mile away and can supply your basic food, gas, and miscellaneous item needs including the minnows for the day's fishing!

Excellent place for an extended family get-together.

  • 5 of 5

We stayed here with 7 adults and one baby, and it fit us perfectly. The house is really well furnished and stocked with the necessities. Plenty of common area for good discussion and fun. Take a spin around the property, it's really nice and large. The morning was spent on the expansive deck. There is no A/C, so if you are there on a hot day like we were, just open the upper level windows and use the box fans they provide to circulate the air; odds are it will cool down in the evening.

This is a place I'd definitely stay again, for a longer period (we only stayed one night), if we have a larger family function.

fully enjoyed our 2 days and 3 nights stay

  • 4 of 5

The house was beautiful, spacious and very well maintained. It had all the basic amenities. we had a great time. the owners were very helpful and easy to reach. The only reason of taking out one star out of 5 is the mosquitoes . There were so many mosquitoes that it got very hard for us to go outside at the patio for grilling but i would definitely recommend this beautiful house to enjoy vacation at Duluth.

Beautiful place that slept the 10 of us quite comfortably. Close enough to town to make it easy for us to make it to the marathon on time!

Great house for a family vacation.

  • 3 of 5

We had great time at German Haus. House has basic amenities and only 20 minutes from Duluth. Access to lake was limited by a fallen tree so no water activities.

Owner's Response: Thank you Folks, I apologize for the downed tree. A huge wind and rain storm went through the area and we actually lost 20 trees overall. The tree across the dock is being removed. Thank you, Cathleen
