Pictures do not do this rental justice - Absolutely perfect for our family

  • 5 of 5

When we booked this property, I though of a 'splurge' over our budget to be right on the ocean. Honestly, this has to be one of the best places we have ever stayed. The house itself isn't anything fancy, but well laid out with bedrooms at the back of the house, with a bath in-between, and the kitchen, dining and living areas in one big room, facing the ocean. Beds were very comfortable, and water pressure and temperature was good.

For us, (2 adults, 1-11yo) the house was all about the ocean. It turns out the natural pool is between the house and the open bay and much larger than the pictures. Water levels change with the tides, but during high tides, we were in there snorkeling with the fishes!! During lower tides, we would feed the fish and resident moray eel! All with the sounds of the waves and a spectacular open water view of the bay and ocean.

With a dining table and chairs, a BBQ (didn't use), lounge chairs, outdoor shower, we ended up skipping the Kapoho Tidepools and other local field trips, and just hanging at the house. The layout of the property is also very private, so you can't see your neighbors.

Perfect for the two of us. But, know what you are buying!

Very private. We could be outside any time of day in any manner we wished. The tide pool was even more private.

The house is simple, clean and well maintained. There are two bedrooms, but it would be tight for four people. For us as a couple it was perfect.

This is not a resort, it is a private cottage. It is 9 miles from Pahoa which has a couple of grocery stores and a couple of restaurants. It is 30 miles from Hilo. If you want to go out every night and have maid service clean up after you, this will not meet your needs. If you want to savor your solitude: sun, swim in the tide pool and just be with the one(s) you came with, this is perfect. It is quiet all the time, and the sounds of the waves will lull you to sleep at night.

The bay beyond the tide pool is very shallow. While we were there, the seas were rough and it appeared that they may have been a rip current just outside the tide pool. We did not try to go beyond the pool, but had no need to do so.

The fish in the pool wanted to be fed. There are instructions about how to do that. Someone wrote an earlier review claiming that the fish were bothering their children. I am bluntly skeptical. We were in the pool a lot, and the fish either moved away or simply ignored us. They will come over to the edge when someone is standing there, thinking that they will be fed, but as soon as you start to enter the water, they move away. If you bring food into the tide pool with you, the fish will probably come right up to you, but no food - the fish ignore you.

Another review objected to dishes that didn’t match. Very true, but they all worked fine and were in good condition. It’s a vacation cottage, not a Hilton. We give it a "barefoot 5 star" rating!

We loved this place. It was perfect for us. We will likely be back soon.

What a fantastic hideaway

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I arrived extremely late, well after dark, so we were a bit worried about finding our way into the unit. Yet, with the wonderfully detailed entry directions, we had no problems whatsoever. We were welcomed by Hawaiian music as we entered the door, and enjoyed the view and sounds of the waves during our entire stay. The ocean breezes cooled the home well, and we slept comfortably each night. I would strongly recommend this oceanfront getaway to anyone searching for a private and cozy vacation spot.

Reviewer Comments:

The house was perfect for our family of four. It has the most amazing location!, right on the ocean! The private tidal pool with outdoor shower is incredible and our boys couldn't get enough of it. High tide is a sight to see as the waves crash up over the wall of the tide pool. We snorkeled in the near by Waiopae Tide Pools and saw the most beautiful fish and huge coral. We would definitely stay at Sunrise House again. It is an affordable piece of paradise!

Reviewer Comments:

Sunrise House was the perfect get away place for my husband and I to relax and unwind from our chaotic busy lives. The place was great for watching the sunrise and sunsets. The only thing we didn't like is the fact that the pond water doesn't circulate enough with the ocean flow, so the water gets really mucky with the sediment on the bottom. So, we climbed the wall and jumped into some fresh ocean water on the left side of the wall which was so refreshing and clean. The pond also felt weird on the bottom--like we were walking on carpet or something. However, I believe the pond is great if you have kids and you don't want to worry about them being pulled out by the current of the ocean. Loved the shower down by the walkway with the rocks sticking out to hang your towel, that was cool. And speaking of cool, the house was very cool with the open screens, and the ceiling fans---loved that as well.

Attractions: caves, pond, volcano, rain forests, nude beach, waterfalls

Golf: A bastion of Hawaiian history and culture, Hilo is home to museums, botanical gardens and cultural centers. Each April Hilo hosts the Merrie Monarch Festival; often called the “Olympics of Hula.” Hilo also offers supermarkets and shops, golf courses, state of the art movie theaters, many fine restaurants and a laid back Aloha atmosphere that is treasured by locals and visitors alike.

Hilo is the gateway to many of the Big Island’s main attractions. At Hawaii Volcanoes National Park you’ll get up close and personal with the planet when you stand on the rim of awesome Kilauea, the world’s most active volcano. Explore our galactic neighborhood from the Visitor Station on the slopes of Mauna Kea, the world’s tallest mountain and home of the mightiest terrestrial telescopes ever built, and see Saturn’s rings and Jupiter’s moons with your own eyes.

Ski: If you’re looking for adventure, discovery, black sand, blue water, humpback whales, tropical rainforests, the cleanest air on earth and the true spirit of Aloha, you can find all of them here. But what sets this area apart from most island vacation spots is what you won’t find: tourist traps, huge crowds and resort prices. We hope you'll visit us soon here in “Old Hawaii” and discover our little Piece of Paradise!

For me its balmy airs are always blowing, its summer seas flashing in the sun; the pulsing of its surf is in my ear; I can see its garlanded crags, its leaping cascades, its plumy palms drowsing by the shore, its remote summits floating like islands above the cloud-rack; I can feel the spirit of its woody solitudes, I hear the plashing of the brooks; in my nostrils still lives the breath of flowers that perished twenty years ago.
