Attractions: caves, pond, volcano, rain forests, nude beach, waterfalls

Golf: A bastion of Hawaiian history and culture, Hilo is home to museums, botanical gardens and cultural centers. Each April Hilo hosts the Merrie Monarch Festival; often called the “Olympics of Hula.” Hilo also offers supermarkets and shops, golf courses, state of the art movie theaters, many fine restaurants and a laid back Aloha atmosphere that is treasured by locals and visitors alike.

Hilo is the gateway to many of the Big Island’s main attractions. At Hawaii Volcanoes National Park you’ll get up close and personal with the planet when you stand on the rim of awesome Kilauea, the world’s most active volcano. Explore our galactic neighborhood from the Visitor Station on the slopes of Mauna Kea, the world’s tallest mountain and home of the mightiest terrestrial telescopes ever built, and see Saturn’s rings and Jupiter’s moons with your own eyes.

Ski: If you’re looking for adventure, discovery, black sand, blue water, humpback whales, tropical rainforests, the cleanest air on earth and the true spirit of Aloha, you can find all of them here. But what sets this area apart from most island vacation spots is what you won’t find: tourist traps, huge crowds and resort prices. We hope you'll visit us soon here in “Old Hawaii” and discover our little Piece of Paradise!

For me its balmy airs are always blowing, its summer seas flashing in the sun; the pulsing of its surf is in my ear; I can see its garlanded crags, its leaping cascades, its plumy palms drowsing by the shore, its remote summits floating like islands above the cloud-rack; I can feel the spirit of its woody solitudes, I hear the plashing of the brooks; in my nostrils still lives the breath of flowers that perished twenty years ago.

What a fantastic hideaway

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I arrived extremely late, well after dark, so we were a bit worried about finding our way into the unit. Yet, with the wonderfully detailed entry directions, we had no problems whatsoever. We were welcomed by Hawaiian music as we entered the door, and enjoyed the view and sounds of the waves during our entire stay. The ocean breezes cooled the home well, and we slept comfortably each night. I would strongly recommend this oceanfront getaway to anyone searching for a private and cozy vacation spot.

Reviewer Comments:

The house was perfect for our family of four. It has the most amazing location!, right on the ocean! The private tidal pool with outdoor shower is incredible and our boys couldn't get enough of it. High tide is a sight to see as the waves crash up over the wall of the tide pool. We snorkeled in the near by Waiopae Tide Pools and saw the most beautiful fish and huge coral. We would definitely stay at Sunrise House again. It is an affordable piece of paradise!

Reviewer Comments:

Sunrise House was the perfect get away place for my husband and I to relax and unwind from our chaotic busy lives. The place was great for watching the sunrise and sunsets. The only thing we didn't like is the fact that the pond water doesn't circulate enough with the ocean flow, so the water gets really mucky with the sediment on the bottom. So, we climbed the wall and jumped into some fresh ocean water on the left side of the wall which was so refreshing and clean. The pond also felt weird on the bottom--like we were walking on carpet or something. However, I believe the pond is great if you have kids and you don't want to worry about them being pulled out by the current of the ocean. Loved the shower down by the walkway with the rocks sticking out to hang your towel, that was cool. And speaking of cool, the house was very cool with the open screens, and the ceiling fans---loved that as well.

Reviewer Comments:

You can feel the love that is poured into this home. It is amazing that a house built in the sixties, sitting on the edge of the Pacific is in such wonderful condition. Is it tiny? Yes. Is it a perfect taste of Hawaiian life? I'd like to think so. We thoroughly enjoyed seeing the ocean from almost every room from the house. Waking up in my bed and looking out to see the sunrise over the ocean every day made me smile. Washing dishes looking at the ocean made me smile. Swimming in our own tide pool and meeting the variety of fish that reside there, made me smile. It is a wonderful place on the coast of the Big Island!

The one and only wish we had was that there wasn't SO much warning about break-ins. They can happen, we get it, it happens in our own suburban neighborhood in Atlanta. However, the warnings were so excessive they made us feel like we should fear for our safety while in the house. Is there really that much danger?

That would be the only complaint. Everything else from the flowers and music upon entry, to the wonderful seating by the ocean was amazing.
