Overview

About the property

kitchen, dining table, queen bed, full bath, living room, patio, solitude

If you are seeking solitude, natural beauty, peace, tranquility, starry night skies, and easy access to the best that Door County has to offer, you have found what you are looking for. Welcome to Fernwood Farm. We offer two suites for rent on the first floor of our house, surrounded by acres of untouched northern Door County hardwood forest and meadows full of bright wildflowers, towering maples, white birches, swaying evergreens, singing birds, quiet deer, and curious raccoons.

Fernwood Farm is a unique place that lets you escape to a peaceful country setting and still be only minutes away from hundreds of fun-filled places, activities, shops, forests, beaches, water sports, antiquing, and much more.

We offer two cozy suites (the Apple Suite and the Cherry Suite) for rent in northern Door County, Wisconsin. Each suite includes a kitchen with dining table, bedroom, bathroom, living room, and amenities like a microwave, refrigerator, wifi, and satellite TV. The open floorplan works best for 2 adults per suite. A couch in the living room can sleep 2 more adults or children.

A patio door in each suite faces our meadow, our neighbor's meadow, our neighbor's neighbor's meadow, etc. You'll also have easy access to our woods that border our meadow a few yards away from the suites.

We're dog friendly. Our golden retriever, Buddy, welcomes friends (human and canine) to visit and stay with us.

Feel like a campfire? If the weather cooperates, you can watch the trees sway in the moonlight while you roast marshmallows. And you won't believe the stars at night. Watch for shooting stars and satellites, and see the Milky Way in all its brilliance.

When you're here, you feel worlds away from the life you temporarily left behind. Watch birds fly and wildflowers sway, hike our trails, see more stars than you've ever imagined. Read. Eat. Take a nap. Jog or bike. Take a short drive and see the sun rise over Lake Michigan on a secluded beach. While you're there, fish, swim, explore. Then go shopping and antiquing. Play mini golf. Start a puzzle. Take another nap. Finish the puzzle. Go to the candy store. Visit the original Door County fish boil (in our town). Ride the ferry to Washington Island. You get the idea.

You can hike in the forest or in the meadow at Fernwood Farm. Both the meadow and the woods offer miles of private hiking trails. Some trails are paved gravel, some are mowed grass, and others are rugged terrain. The low-traffic backroads in our area are great for bicycle rides. The Nature Conservancy's Mink River Estuary is a half mile away on County Road NP. And Newport State Park, home of some of Wisconsin's most natural, unblemished land, is about two miles away. Newport includes miles of trails, beaches on Lake Michigan, camping, and terrific sunrises over Lake Michigan at Europe Bay Beach.

If you are seeking solitude, natural beauty, peace, tranquility, starry night skies, and easy access to the best that Door County has to offer, you have found what you are looking for. Welcome to Fernwood Farm.

About Bill & Linda Kelly

We vacationed in Door County for 25 years. Every visit to this magic place provided us with the strength and renewal of spirit to face each day of the year. In 1997 we were gifted with the opportunity of a lifetime: we found and purchased the 37 acres that we named Fernwood Farm. It was our beginning.... again. We rebuilt and refurbished the suites. The Apple Suite and the Cherry Suite are tastefully decorated. They feature modern conveniences, yet provide you with the feeling of days gone by in the remote heartland of Door County. We look forward to sharing Fernwood Farm and the Door County Experience with you on your next visit. Bill & Linda Kelly

cozy, quiet and pieceful

  • 5 of 5

A beautiful old farmhouse, a cozy suite with everything we needed, surrounded by woods and meadows very well taken care of. We, that is me and my German Shepherd Anna enjoyed our time on the wonderful farm so very much. It is only a short ride to the beach and to the Marina in Sister Bay as well, were we went sailing. In the morning we took long walks in the woods and the dog of the hosts, Buddy, a very friendly Golden Retriever, came with us. The hosts, Bill and Linda Kelly made us feel very welcome and we left with the impression that at this place the world is still in order.

Comfortable, great for kids. Enjoyed campfire. Loved Buddy, the dog. Host provided excellent cherry jam. Would suggest replacing mattress but I'm spoiled

Peaceful

  • 4 of 5

We enjoyed our time at Fernwood Farms. Bill & Linda are wonderful & very informative. Buddy is a joy. We loved looking at all the stars; we live in the country but are close to town so we don't get to see the stars like you can at their place.

Affordable for a reason

  • 2 of 5

Let's start with the good. Friendly hosts, lovely piece of property, quiet, close to a great beach at Europe Bay, all the necessities to rest your head and make a few meals, dog friendly and a very affordable price for Door County. Now the not so good, the actual accommodations are run down and it was clear only the linens/towels got changed between guests. I really wasn't expecting fancy, but reasonably maintained and cleaned is something every accommodation should have. I regret I can't rave about Fernwood, but I want to be honest. Last comment, the shower head was meant for someone about 5'2" or shorter (was nose level for 5'7"). If you are tall, forget it.

Quaint, Inexpensive & Lovely Getaway Home

  • 4 of 5

Chose this home for our first trip to Door County. Price was our number one factor and the main reason we chose this home for our four day vacation. It's located in Ellison Bay so you need to plan accordingly if you plan on exploring the entire County and want to spend as little time as possible driving! We stayed in the apple suite (there is also a cherry suite next door) and the owners live above the suites. Quaint is the best way to describe the suite! It's nothing fancy, very homey and somewhat small (but not in comparison to a hotel) and what we expected for the price and perfect for the amount of time we actually spent there as we explored sun up to sun down most days. A full kitchen is included, DISH network TV and an open floor plan which were all very nice. We loved the location and how secluded it was! It was really nice to be away from the hustle and bustle of the touristy towns like Fish Creek. We were also able to meet Linda and Buddy who were fantastic and very accommodating. Only downside was the short shower head which was at about eye level and I'm 5'7" and the lighting over by the dresser/vanity that I got ready at. Definitely not deal breakers for us though! I would definitely stay again and we were happy we chose this location for our first visit to Door County! 😊?

Sweet spot: Linda and Bill are wonderful! Loved the land and area. Our dogs were in heaven!

  • 4 of 5

Linda and Bill (and Buddy) were so very nice! The land at Fernwood Farm is magnificent and we enjoyed the area immensely. Our dogs were in heaven. The kitchen is lovely and oven worked well. We enjoyed Bill's heritage pieces in the display. As mentioned before, the bathroom is older and you will want to bring a portable DVD if you watch movies. We would DEFINITELY stay there again as the amenities are wonderful and the price is very reasonable. Love the area! So dog friendly.
