About Horizons Vacation Rentals

The Surf House is managed by Horizon Vacation Rentals. For information and reservations, call 1-269-469-3771.

The Pokorny Family came to New Buffalo from Chicago in 1932. Gramp's blacksmith shop evolved over the years into a plumbing business. His son, Charles, eventually added a hardware store that grandson, Richard, later converted into The Lookout Landing shops. The Surf House is part of our family history and for many years was home to the "3rd Coast Surf Shop" now located on Whitaker Street downtown.

Why Horizons Vacation Rentals chose Southwest

In 1954, when the Village of New Buffalo Chamber of Commerce first began to improve the harbor, Charles Pokorny proposed the simultaneous development of the beach and park areas. In 1955, an official Park and Recreation Department was established and Charlie was asked to serve as New Buffalo's first Park Commissioner. His team built playground equipment from plumbing pipe, build picnic tables, initiated fireworks at the lake front, and brought about the return of concerts in the park.

What makes this bungalow unique

The Surf House, with the flavor of beach grasses and calm lake colors, carries on our Pokorny family legacy. We welcome you to join with us in the spirit, history, and charm of this lakefront community.

Felt Like Home

As soon as we walked in the door I knew we'd made a great choice. A charming bungalow, beautifully decorated. This place was immaculately clean. Kitchen was stocked with everything you'd need and linens were comfy and clean. Plenty of room for our family of 5. We so enjoyed that cozy front porch. Really unique ice cream shop, Oink's, literally across the street, 3 blocks to a very nice grocery store and a short 15-20 min walk to down town restaurants and the beach. Would love to come back again!

Very lovely place to stay1

We loved the house as soon as we walked in the door. It was very clean, spacious, comfortable, and cozy. We were also concerned about having one bathroom , but it was a nice size and it worked . Really enjoyed hanging out on the front porch too. We would stay again.

Perfect for our group!

  • 5 of 5

This house is in a great location; it's an easy walk to downtown NB. Additionally, we really liked the layout of the house. It's very open and spacious, and the large front porch was great to have as well. We were a little concerned at first about having just the one bathroom, but it is a HUGE bathroom with double sinks so it was just fine. We would definitely rent again.

Just Perfect

A quaint house within walking distance of the shops and the beach. Quiet neighborhood and ample parking space behind the house. We really enjoyed the sitting area on the front porch. The house had a large dining table and cozy living room. The owner was very sweet and we would definitely stay here again!

Love Surf House

  • 5 of 5

This was our second year to stay at surf house. It feels like our home away from home. So comfortable and peaceful. We love to get an ice cream and walk to the beach and watch the sunset. My husband and kids caught fish off of the rocks that we cooked for dinner. With six kids, we needed the kitchen and it was stocked with everything we could think of…
