The beaches of Isla have two different characters. The North and West beaches are shallow with white coral sand and very safe for bathing. The eastern coastline is more rugged with curling Caribbean swells and are ideal for walking and shelling.
Isla is known for it's laid back approach to life. Visitors to the island are independent and individual and making new friends is one of the joys of the island.
Michelle and I 'stumbled' upon Isla Mujeres in February of 2005. Well, it was 'love at first sight'. Upon our return to our home town of Madison, WI we began a search for our vacation home. Within a few weeks we returned with our 3 week daughter, Bella, and bought our Island home. Over the last few years we have become immersed in the wonderful culture of the island and made many new friends. We've become active with the La Gloria English school that helps local people learn functional English, to help them obtain better paying work and to improve their standard of living. Having Isla as a second home has become one of the most enjoyable aspects of our lives. We hope if you choose to share our home, you enjoy the Island as much as we do.
Dan and Michelle Gillette purchased this villa in 2005
Islas wonderful local people and their exceptional culture make this a wonderful place to spend our 'down time'. International cuisine and top notch local food offer so many choices for relaxing meals. Being a few steps from the ocean no matter where you are on Isla makes for a unique experience for ocean lovers.
Over the years I have stayed in many places on Isla. The casa was the most americanized and up to date yet. lights every where, fans and A/C worked great. It was really nice to open up from your bedroom to the beautiful pool. The bedrooms are separated by the entry way giving complete privacy. Feel secure and private with the eight foot wall all the way around the place. Mexico is always noisy....not at the house of the butterfly....not a sound to be heard except for, would you bring me another beer...please? You must say please or she will not get out of her hammock to do it and she lost her place in her book. I'm sorry. Oh, clean you talk about clean, hospital clean. Sun rise, oh yes from the east patio, a great view of the sun and the full moon coming over the Caribe. You must plan your trip during the full moon. West patio was great in the afternoon, cool breeze and over looking the pool. Sunset, yes! Bring your marg and mohito to the third story...fantastic.
Excellent location for us. We were looking for a nice, safe, quiet retreat without the hustle n' bustle. House was clean, comfortable with all the amenities...hot showers, comfortable beds, cold AC-DC, full kitchen, nice pool and several decks. Very close to "The Joint", Garrafon de castielle and an awesome private beach at Maria's Kan Kin...it was our 6th trip to Isla and we have stayed somewhere different each time...would definitely stay here again!
My family loved this place! We have 2, 10-year-olds who really enjoyed the pool and the bedroom that they shared. Our bedrooms all had more than enough space for us.
The swimming pool is well cared for, the water was always sparkling clean, the property was well-kept and fun to hang out in.
The kitchen, family room and 3rd bathroom (and drinking water) are all located on the 2nd floor. This can be tiring to climb the stairs each time you want a drink but we had water bottles.
The views were simply amazing out of the back of the house. We love being able to see the ocean from the kitchen although in the morning you may need sunglasses to cook breakfast!
There were birds nesting also right outside the front of the house, in the bamboo trees. The kids loved watching them and the iguanas outside.
All of the appliances worked. My kids loved making smoothies. We were spoiled with maid service that came 2 times while we were there (for 7 days). We didn't run out of clean dishes but we didn't use the kitchen a lot either. Plus we can always wash our own.
We really missed not having a washer and dryer since our beach towels can get pretty nasty and we didn't have enough time to really search out a laundry service, so having a laundry service on the recommendation list at the house would be awesome.
Our only complaint (and why 4 out 5 stars) is the water pressure in the house is really poor. I understand this is true for most of the south side of the island, and expected it to a degree... but were we glad to shower when we got home to the states!!
All in all, we would stay there again and recommend it to anyone who knows the island and it's quirks and don't forget to plan to have a golf cart!
PS- we named the big Iguana living by the golf cart Carl. Carl the Iguana.. LOL
Once again a delightful place to stay. August 27 - September 3. My first time at Casa Mariposa was August 2010. Been a few more times to other casa's but this time was a Mother/Daughter trip. The AC option was what I thought she might need but Mom acclimate very well, without AC. (Mom did very, very well at 83. Many were surprised at that, she kept sharing that tid bit off and on so I know she was comfortable visiting Isla.) Casa is near Punta Sur so I suggest a golf cart. Walking distance to rugged but safe scenic shore hikes...or a walk on a sidewalk lined roads on either side of casa. Breezes, sunrises and a view of iconic shell house off one patio that I often found my Mom enjoying. We got groceries and had dinner inside but also out on the patio deck with a six person table. Only one odd issue and Dan helped us take care of that. Cleaning and pool guy good. It is a compound with walls all the way around. We had evenings looking towards Caribbean that we saw fireflies in the surrounding vegetation. Love the pool bridge...unique to property in general but a great place to hang, out of the sun, and enjoy still enjoy the pool on a hot day. We met Richart who created the floating bottle island, also the turtle farm on same road. Took cell but did not use. Wifi great so ipad was a way to keep in touch as needed and share pics of our adventure. Dined on North beach area at several places. Last evening, wanted it special. Casa Mariposa does not have a full sunset view. I was going to take Mom to Zama Beach Club for dinner but something pulled me toward a nearby spot on the way there. Turned around and after checking menu at Casa Suenos a small hotel but open to public dining. Note: can even reserve private dining at the end of the pier...we saw a couple doing that who arrived when we did. A good place that we has our South Point sunset and dinner. Good food and service. To sum it up: Still Smiling.
We have been to Isla several times and this is the third villa that we have rented. Each of the villas has strengths. What we enjoyed most about Casa Mariposa was the privacy. Other trips we have been with family or friends but this time it was just my wife and I. We liked the location in that it was away from noisy streets and yet a great home base to go and do all of the great things that Isla has to offer. The villa was everything that it claimed to be. A lady came by to clean a few times but always when we were gone. A man cleaned the pool a few times but was inconspicuous as well. There were many birds and beautiful flowers and trees to enjoy while soaking up the sun. We paid to go to a beach one day but hurried back to the villa because it was just much more relaxing quiet. Isla has some of the best restaurants of all the places we have been to in the Caribbean. That is why we keep coming back. It is easily accessed from Cancun and a fun and safe place to enjoy the sun. I wish I was there right now! A perfect day would be Mango Cafe for breakfast, The Soggy Peso for lunch and afternoon margaritas and then supper at Limon's.
I highly recommend Isla Mujeres and Casa Mariposa. Go for it and have a great time!
It's been over two months since my family and I stayed at Casa De Mariposas, and it's been a rough two months. I can't help but look at photos of our stay on Isla and think "why aren't we there right now?" Enough about me, this house was great, amazing, fantastic, incredible, etc... It was my wife, my 2 year old son and couple we are friends with that stayed in the house. The house was perfect for our son, the salt water pool was great for him and the gates at the house kept him off the stairs. We stayed for 9 days and we ended up making food for half our stay. The kitchen was perfect and clean, had all the utensils you could possibly need and was convenient. Our room was technically below the 2nd floor front porch so we'd put our son down for bed and sit on the back patio on the second floor. I miss that patio more than anything, we'd sit out on the back in the morning and night and watch/listen to the ocean and just relax. The breeze that came to the back was great, really helped to cool you off. The decor of the house was great, the color of the walls, and the detail of the house was amazing. I'd buy the house in 2 seconds if I could. The bridge over the pool was really neat, it was a great touch to the front area and made it unique. The location was perfect, although we weren't very close to a store, the area we were in was extremely quiet. Also, if you'd like to go to a beach Garaffon de Castilla is a short walk and has a breathtaking beach. Unfortunately we only went there twice but next time around I will be there everyday. There was more than enough water provided and the maids came every other day. I've been to Isla before and it quickly became my favorite place in the world but this house is my favorite place on the Island. It's extremely relaxing and the perfect getaway. It's also very homey, I felt like I was at home the minute we arrived at the house. The owner was extremely cooperative and was a pleasure to communicate with. He answered all my questions and made sure we were set up accordingly. I appreciate all that he did for us and want to thank him for allowing my family to enjoy such a wonderful home. I will be back at the house at some point next year and hope to make this house my vacation spot for years to come.
As a filmmaker, I know that sometimes a story can be oversold, too earnest, tries too hard. However, my wife and I, along with another couple who are also in the Hollywood business, found Casa Mariposas online. We looked at the various reviews, read between the lines, and came to one simple conclusion - this is the place to stay on Isla Mujeres.
If you are looking for an all-inclusive resort - go elsewhere. If you want a central location (well, really, on a 5 mile by 1/2 mile island, what part is not central?) look elsewhere. If you want to live in a house, with great balconies and patios, with a fantastic kitchen, get in your 4-person plus cargo bin golf cart (which the owners of CM will arrange for you - they even come by in the middle of the night and refuel) and be anywhere on the island in 10 minutes, but still have a private enclave, with a private pool, to come home to, Casa Mariposas is the place.
If you dive, there are so many options it's almost ridiculous - MUSA (the underwater sculpture museum - hundreds of life sized statues), wrecks, reefs, cenotes on the mainland, whale sharks (snorkeling only). We could not have imagined a better week. Throw your gear into the back of the cart and away you go. Or, even better, contact Dick and Morna at Paradise Divers - amongst the best tour operators ever - and we have all dived a lot, so that is not faint praise. Again, Tripadvisor subscribers - read between the lines.
Casa Mariposas - we will visit again and again.
