About the property

2 Bedrooms, 2 Bathrooms, Sleeps 9

Built in 1923, this spanish-style house is now a duplex and the back half of the property has 2 bedrooms and 2 full bathrooms with a private yard and jacuzzi just for this back unit. Yard is fully fenced with a large old evergreen tree in the center providing lovely shade. The 4-person hottub in the private backyard is the perfect ending (or beginning!) to each day.

The master bedroom has a beautiful original hardwood floor in an exquisite picture frame pattern. In addition to the high quality natural latex queen bed there is also a queen-sized futon set up at the back of the room which overlooks the backyard.

Lime green guest room has a new Queen bed.

High speed internet WiFi.

There are AC window units in master bedroom and living room.

Landscaper comes twice a month.

Culligan reverse-osmosis water is at the kitchen sink and filters are changed regularly.

Comfy couch (not a sleeper sofa) in living room sleeps 1 plus there's a top of the line air mattress.

If the guest departs more than 30 minutes after the checkout time they will be charged a $50 late checkout fee. We need the full cleaning window to get the place sparkling clean for the next guest and when a departing guest leaves late it can impact the arriving guest, and that's not fair to them or to us.

We provide enough consumable supplies like TP and Paper Towels for the first few days and after that the guest is responsible for providing their own.

About Rosemary

Sean and Rosemary are both originally from New England. We are in our late-30s, we love cooking/eating, going to the beach, running, biking, hiking, yoga, reading. Sean works in renewable energy and is the homeowner. Rosemary is an interior designer and the property manager.

Rosemary purchased this house in 2012

Why Rosemary chose San Diego

Sean bought this house because the neighborhood is peaceful and the house is beautiful.

What makes this house unique

We love the private backyard and the two full bathrooms. The crowning glory is the huge master bedroom with a gorgeous original hardwood floor laid out in a picture frame pattern.

First off, this house is for sale. We learned this 5 days prior to our 3 month stay. The owners wanted us out of the house at least one day a month for their agent to show it. If we had known, we would not have booked the place. The owner was very nice when we said we did not want to participate in any open houses, but we still constantly had people trying to peer in our windows and lurking in our alley to get a look at the place.

The backyard with hot tub was a big factor in our decision to book this apartment. And it was the biggest disappointment. We wanted a yard for our dog and a hot tub for a hot tub. Unfortunately, we could never leave the dog in the yard because there was always somebody roaming back there. Housekeepers, the owner, contractors, FedEx, random solicitors, pest control. We were told that yard maintenance and the pool guy came on Mondays. That is manageable. If we had known that the dog had to be inside all the time to accommodate random visitors, we would not have booked this spot.

The hot tub was never hot when we wanted to get in it. We were told to reset circuit breakers and that the pool maintenance guy would fix it. It would work for a day or two and then we would be ready to hop in and…cold. This happened for three months. The pool guy even said that flipping the breakers was a short term fix and the tub needed some work. Maybe it is fixed now. We didn’t use it once in ninety days.

By far the worst part were the neighbors. Our backyard constantly reeked of their cigarette smoke and was filled with the sound of their profane screaming. Some of the noise was between adults but most was directed at two little girls, around 4 and 8 years old. It got really good on the weekends when everybody (at least five adults live there with a rotating cast of other shady characters) was drinking. Enjoying a meal on our back patio was very difficult when the mother on the other side of the fence was shouting obscenities so horrible even vrbo won't let us post. The police were not strangers to their home, hopefully they will visit more often.

If you are coming in for a day or two, a Chargers game or maybe a visit to Balboa Park, this may be a great place. You could get lucky and pick the magic days the hot tub is working. And perhaps you’ll even avoid the tweaker in the front yard screaming death threats into an imaginary phone for hours. But, it’s a roll of the dice. I totally understand why this house is on the market.

Fantastic Retreat-Like Property in the heart of University Heights and North Park

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at the Spanish Charmer for several months while getting to know San Diego. Our favorite parts of the home were the backyard which was private and retreat-like with the hammock and hot tub (able to enjoy all seasons!), the proximity to great restaurants and shops (highly walkable) and the comfortable, home-like furnishings. The property very quickly felt like our own and we (and our dog) really enjoyed being in this area. Also, Rosemary was extremely responsive the rare times we needed some help. I would highly recommend this rental.

Exceeds expectations!

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I stayed in this home for several weeks while escaping northern winters and found it completely comfortable and relaxing. The upstairs bedrooms have large window with blinds that open from either the top or the bottom--waking up in the morning with the sun streaming in through the upper panes was like paradise. Morning coffee or a glass of wine in the late afternoon on the very private back porch really felt like an indulgence. The neighborhood was great--very quiet and friendly. We brought our one-year old collie and my wife made friends with at least a dozen other dog owners just by walking around and talking to people. The house is across the street from a catholic girls school and we had assumed that would mean noise and commotion twice a day but we found to our surprise that we really heard almost nothing! A great coffee house was just two blocks away and wonderful restaurants were within easy walking distance. Rosemary and Sean were always available when needed but never intruded on our solitude. We spent quite a lot of time looking for just the right place to stay in San Diego and I can truly say that our high expectations have been exceeded. We have already booked our stay for next year!

Great time at the Solar Powered Spanish Charmer

  • 5 of 5

My spouse and I rented this unit, and loved it. The unit is centrally located in a nice, quiet neighborhood. We found it to be close to the city, neighborhood shops, and the beaches. It was very clean. The large flat screen TV in the living room had many channels from which to choose. It had a secluded backyard, deck, and spa. The two upstairs bedrooms were quite spacious, and had a shared bathroom. The kitchen had everything we needed. There was even a driveway to park our car. And, the owners provided excellent customer service. We would most certainly rent from them in the future.

Quiet Paradise!

  • 5 of 5

We chose this as a 5 day home base to stay at while moving our son to his dorm at SDSU; he needed extra days beforehand for ROTC. After busy days driving, shopping and moving in this cozy bungalow was a quiet respite to come home to! The backyard is secure for pets and is so peaceful with it's enormous pine tree and twinkling lights that are timed to come on at dusk. The kitchen was well equipped and the living and dining areas perfect.

The largest shopping center we have ever seen with every store and restaurant conceivable is 5 minutes away.

Rosemary texted me the first day to check-in to make sure all was well and have her contact information. This is an ideal location just minutes from I-8 with easy access to all parts of San Diego; we highly recommend this home.

Great place.

This is a great place to rent. My kids loved the hot tub, Free Netflix as awesome, and it was close to any shopping or services that you need. We took the kids to Trolley Barn Park, San Diego Zoo, La Jolla Cove and the USS Midway ship, everything was less than a 20 min drive. Nice quiet neighborhood, would recommend to anyone.
