If you're looking for a larger house on the Hill for a comfortable rendezvous with family or friends -- be they 8 months, 8 or 80 -- this is your spot. We offer two things that are hard to come by: First - true proximity to the U.S. Capitol ( check your map as you consider locations - Capitol Hill is a large area and many places are not very "close in," but ours is ground zero to sites and restaurants); Second - we have parking - though you probably won't need your car as it's so walkable, bikeable and transit-friendly here.
The East Capitol Street neighborhood is renowned for having the comfortable, tree-lined feel of an 1800s village even as it's a few blocks from world-class entertainment and restaurants, and literally in the shadow of the U.S. Capitol, the Supreme Court and the Library of Congress.
Our 1850 home has four bedrooms + two living rooms, and can accommodate 8 - 10 people. It's suitable for small children (toys, yard) as well as the older set (sightseeing, easy walks). The house is roomy by Capitol Hill standards (2,300 sf) and also private (we have a deep yard in the front and private patio in the back). This is our family home so it is fully stocked with everything you'd need for a home-like stay. We have parking, lots of sun and -- best of all -- we are four blocks from the U.S. Capitol, the Supreme Court and the Library of Congress, and we are a ten-minute walk from two Metro stops. Our home is 2 stories, plus a basement. It sleeps six to eight comfortably (two more could be accommodated in a pinch.) Our top floor has a large master bedroom with a king bed and an en-suite bathroom with a large shower; down the hall from the master bedroom are are three additional bedrooms; one has bunk beds and a trundle and thus can sleep up to three comfortably; another bedroom has a single bed with a pop-up trundle bed which enables the room to have either a twin bed or a king bed - two can sleep here comfortably. The final bedroom has a single bed and can sleep one. These bedrooms share sunny a hall bathroom that has a shower over tub arrangement. Down the stairs, on our first floor, we have a pull-out couch that can sleep another two, if needed. On the ground floor there is a formal parlor with a fireplace, a piano, perfect for quiet cocktails or hanging out. As you walk down the hall from the parlor there is a bathroom and a coat closet. Next there is a nice-sized dining room that can seat 10. Through the dining room is a large open kitchen that includes that opens onto a back family room that is enclosed by two sets of french doors overlooking the patio. The family room has lots of comfortable seating and is where kids and grown ups alike relaxing, playing and watching movies. Our favorite room in the summer is actually outside, in our back patio, which has a grill, lots of plants and an automatic awning for when it’s too sunny (or rainy!), and ample seating for summer parties. In the basement there is a washer and dryer; we have a parking spot available in the back of the house so you can avoid the expense of parking garages.
We fell in love with our house because it's a rambling, private and comfortable house on one of the most prominent streets in the country: East Capitol Street. We have a sunny, private patio out back where we love to have breakfast and dinner.
Not a lot of homes on Capitol Hill are sunny, but we are lucky to have lots of sunshine. In the morning we have coffee in the kitchen or out back, watching the cardinals and checking on our tomatoes and other plants. We can walk almost anywhere from our front door - to the Smithsonians, the subway, the bus, restaurants, parks, you name it!
We had a great time visiting D.C., and especially staying in Diana's wonderful home. The house is beautiful and in a very cool neighborhood, and is just a few blocks up the street from the Capitol building. The home is surprisingly spacious, beautifully furnished, and included all of the amenities that we could have wanted. It was also great to have off-street reserved parking.
The house was clean, spacious and welcoming. The neighborhood was quiet and close enough to the national mall to walk to the museums and monuments. The house easily accommodated our family of eight which included young children, a young adult and a grandparent. Diana was very nice and made sure we had everything we needed to make our stay enjoyable. We hope to be able to stay here again when we visit DC in the future.
We felt very comfortable in this clean, lovely family home so close to everything we came to visit in DC. For a city house, it was very quiet and spacious. The street and neighborhood are pretty and feel safe. Lots of good food options nearby. The house has an older aesthetic but with nicely redone kitchen, bathrooms and family room. Linens and towels were good quality. Diana was a helpful and welcoming host, easily reachable by cell phone with any questions. There were tons of games, toys and books available which made our "down time" particularly relaxing and fun. Thank you, Diana and family!
Nice two floor house with two sitting rooms and good 4 rooms up stairs. Everything needed and more in the kitchen. Good back yard and parking place.
Quiet area, nice neighbourhood. 7 minutes to South Capitol or Eastern Market metro station. Big supermarkets 20 minutes walking or one station by metro.
I hardly recomend this property and the owners are very nice
Diana and James helped make our stay enjoyable with all the information they provided. We walked to all the monuments, to restaurants and to the Eastern Market. We made large family dinners for 2 nights. We really enjoyed the family room being beside the kitchen so we were able to visit while preparing the meals. We had a lovely family Thanksgiving.
Our stay in D.C. was fabulous due to the care and concern of the homeowner about our comfort for a party of 10 people staying for a church function in the National Cathedral. Our accomodations, the lay out of the house, the attention of the home owner to make us feel at "home" were terrific. We had a wonderful experience. We'd book again and again! Thank you!
We are steps from some of the most interesting museums and government institutions in the country. There's literally something for everyone and every age and the best part is you don't need a car. One of our personal favorites is the US Capitol Building, which is four blocks away; there are free tours all day long and if you get tired, not problem, you can just take the rest of the tour the next day! The Library of Congress is another favorite - it's one of the prettiest buildings we have ever seen, like gorgeous palace. A few blocks from our house is Pennsylvania Avenue and 7th Street and the Eastern Market area -- all of them filled with small restaurants that are family friendly, cafes, bars and coffee places. We also have a number of parks where we often toss a ball around, run our dog and have a picnic.
