About the property

“Rustic Elegance!” - a guest described after seeing our warm, inviting cabin home for the first time. If you choose to experience it, you will find it to be that - and much more.

THE CABIN:

When you enter the 2,230 square-foot log home, you will find that the large Great Room will capture your imagination the moment you walk in the door. The tall wooden pillars and the ceiling beams were all hand-carved by an old Taos Indian in the 1950’s. The large rock fireplace will warm your heart, your soul and your body.

The new 55' flat screen TV located in the Great Room will keep you entertained when you are in the mood to kick-back, put your feet up and relax. You will have access to dozens of channels, DVD player, plus Wi-Fi and telephone service. All of the furniture pieces were designed with comfort and beauty in mind. The many, unique artifacts that adorn the walls were handpicked and complement the ambiance of the home. We recommend bringing some of your favorite DVS’s and reading material. However, there are a number of DVD’s and books available for your enjoyment.

The adjoining kitchen is equipped with every appliance and accessory you might need. The gas kitchen stove is a high-quality Viking range and oven with a range-top grill between the four burners. The fridge is a side-by side freezer/refrigerator. You will find an additional smaller freezer nearby, as well as an automatic dishwasher, coffee maker and other appliances. The dishes, silverware, cups and glasses will accommodate 10 to 12 people. The large dining table is great for eating, entertaining and especially for playing games such as card games, Mexican Train, dominoes and a host of other games and jigsaw puzzles, all of which are available for your enjoyment.

BEDROOMS:

The Master Bedroom is also quite spacious and contains a beautiful log, king-sized bed with a very comfortable mattress. It is a welcome retreat after a full day of fun. All bed linens are provided. A new 40” flat screened TV is conveniently located for easy viewing from the bed. There is a walk-in closet in the Master; and in between the closet and Master Bath, is a set of doors that opens to a washer and dryer if needed during your stay. The Master Bath has a Jacuzzi tub and a separate shower as well as two sinks and mirrors. All towels, wash cloths and other necessities are provided.

The large Guest Bedroom is a lovely, large room with a king-sized bed and other unique pieces of furniture and decorations. For extra convenience, we recently installed a private sink in the bedroom. There is also a fair–sized, walk-in closet in that room. Check out the many games and puzzles that are in that closet.

The smaller Guest Bedroom with its log bunk-beds is a delight for kids of all ages. The bottom bed has a standard sized mattress that can easily accommodate two adults or two young children. The top bed has a single sized mattress. This room contains a log desk as well.

GUEST BATH:

Between the large guest bedroom and the third, smaller bedroom, is a shared bathroom, which contains a stand-up shower with a small bath tub at the bottom for children to use if needed. There are double sinks and other necessary amenities.

OUTDOOR AREAS:

After familiarizing yourself with the cabin, it is time to explore the outdoor area. Be aware that it is not unusual to see a small group of deer just casually grazing and roaming on the property as if it were their own.

From the Great Room, please use either of the doors located on the wall bordering the kitchen. Turn to your left and head over to the log swing – as you are walking, note the fire pit to the right for bon-fires at night and in the background a small log cabin for the children to play in. By the time you reach the log swing, if not already, you will hear the sound and be able to see the river waters running at the bottom of a sloping incline. You will also be able to see the beauty of the nearby pond surrounding by high mountains that will reach out and touch your soul.

The deck that runs along the back side of the house also provides you with additional lovely views and takes you to the opposite side of the cabin where a larger deck nestles up against the cabin’s entry door. If you turn to your right and go down the 3 or 4 steps and out straight across the yard, then look to your right again, you will find a sign indicating the location of a staircase, which will take you to the river that runs along the edge of the property.

There is a new propane barbecue available for your grilling pleasure on the north-west deck. A number of outdoor furniture pieces, including an enjoyable log-built swinging bench, mentioned previously, are all available for your enjoyment. There is a very nice picnic table with attached benches on the deck closest to the kitchen as well as a larger picnic table on the ground on the opposite side of the home.

For those who love 'around the camp fire” experiences,' there is a good-sized fire pit with a decorative metal guard. There are handmade wooden benches provided. However, if more comfort is desired, feel free to move some of the other outdoor chairs closer to the fire. Please check with the local Fire Department to be sure fires are allowed at that time. There are usually signs entering and exiting the main road going through Red River that indicate the approval level of firm usage.

Our hope and expectation is that you and your family and friends will all fall in love with our “Rugged Elegance – Vacation Rental” and that you will want to come back again and again.

Thank you!

About Victoria Skinner

Ken & Victoria have been happily married for 21+ years. We have a large, extended family most of whom have experienced the magnificent beauty of the Red River area and particularly our pleasant and inviting mountain home.

Ken was born and raised in Albuquerque NM and still has a lot of family scattered throughout the area. Victoria was born and raised north of Detroit, MI, and moved to Arizona in 1980 and quickly fell in love with the great southwest. We met in Arizona and later married in 1995.

Victoria Skinner purchased this cabin in 2005

Why Victoria Skinner chose New Mexico

We experienced the charming community of Red River, NM, for the first time while driving the 'Enchanted Circle' and to our surprise, we both fell in love with it instantly. We drove back through, went to a real estate office, looked at a cabin and bought it. Discovered that the cabin was too small for all the company we were having and bought the current beloved cabin that we have lived in ever since.

What makes this cabin unique

We have put a lot of ourselves into our cabin home and it has been full of family get-together memories that are priceless to us. The cabin was built in the early to mid 1950's. Adding to the warmth of the cabin are beautiful hand-carved pillars, which hold up the roof to the Great Room.

Views of the nearby pond, river and mountains in all directions were also contributing factors to why we bought the place. Pine trees envelop the cabin and a east fork of the Red River borders the 3/4 acre property. It is very quiet, peaceful and enjoyable. We often have a small herd of deer wandering through the property enjoying the lush vegetation.

Within a very short distance, one can leave all evidence of civilization and enjoy the tranquility of the mountains, streams and forest. This is just a small nugget of why we love it here.

Beautiful!

  • 5 of 5

This was our 2nd stay at this property. The home is absolutely amazing. Beautifully decorated and spacious. Outdoor views of river, mountains, and pond are stunning. Did have a healthy bear come right up to the front porch one evening, my 2 yr old granddaughter alerted us to his presence with a blood curdling scream. She still loves teddy bears so I don't think it scarred her. We had a wonderful, relaxing, few days, and are taking wonderful memories back to Oklahoma.

Comfortable, secluded and snow-covered

  • 5 of 5

We had such a wonderful time at this cozy and secluded cabin! We have four small kids (ages 2-8) and the sleeping arrangements and open floor plan were perfect for us. We especially loved being able to explore and play in the deep snow right out the front door. The kitchen is well stocked with quality appliances, and the laundry closet was super helpful. We spent most of our time at the cabin, but we also enjoyed frequent visits into Red River to go shopping and snow tubing in the evenings.

In addition, we were very impressed with Victoria's (owner) and Marty's (property manager) responsiveness. This is an excellent, comfortable cabin, with great management. We would love to visit again someday!

Exceeded our expectations!!

  • 5 of 5

Our trip was wonderful and staying in your beautiful home made it so much better!!!

The cabin was fully euipped with everything we needed from linens to sleds to spices to cook with. We even had a delivery mid week to replenish some supplies. We loved making a fire (plenty of wood supplied) roasting marshmallows and relaxing in the jacuzzi tub. There was plenty of snow for the kids to play in and the morning walks in the neighbor were breath taking. Looked just like a postcard!! The roads were nicely plowed but we definitely need a 4 WD to get to the home when the drift moved some snow to the road. I especially appreciated how close to town we were 6 miles but still far away enough to feel like we were in the country. The decor was super cute and welcoming. My ONLY suggestion would be a coat rack added by the front door. Just to keep things tidy after coming in and peeling off all our layers. Other than that we had everything we needed. Would book here again in a heart beat!!!

This beautiful, yet comfortable mountain home is just a short distance (6-1/2 miles) from Red River, New Mexico. Red River, a popular ski and resort town, is located on the historic “Enchanted Circle.” As you drive southeast from Red River on Highway 578 you will find yourself surrounded by nature’s beauty at its best.

While staying in the area, you may want to take advantage of the many sporting and recreational activities close by, such as: fishing, hiking, mountain climbing and sightseeing. These can all be experienced by simply stepping out of the door of the cabin. Within a relatively short drive, you can go river rafting in the Rio Grande River or rock climbing in that same area. In the fall, plan on coming back to see some of the most spectacular colors in the nearby Aspen Groves. In the winter, you can choose from three nearby ski runs in Red River, Angle Fire and the World Class Taos Ski area.

Year around, in the Town of Red River, you can enjoy some of the best steaks you have ever tasted, as well as a wide array of other great Country Western cuisine and entertainment. It is recommended that you plan on shopping the many, unique gift shops and variety of other stores in Red River and Taos. Just outside of Taos, resides the largest surviving multi-storied Taos Pueblo in the United States, which is well worth the visit.

There are also many fine wineries in the nearby communities and many other fantastic places to explore and activities that you can participate in within the surrounding areas.
