About the property

Come Out And Feel The Wild, Wild West

Beautiful home on five acres of pristine desert...Awesome views of the Catalinas and Rincon Mountains.. Lots of birds, coyotes and wildlife all around.. Home is surrounded by mesquites, cacti and agaves....Out but close to shopping, restaurants and cafes....Lots of hiking paths and bike riding close... All tile floors, high ceilings with fans in all rooms...wood burning fireplace inside and out. Huge brick patio and disappearing sliding glass doors to an incredible backyard with big mesquites and awesome views of the Catalina Mountains. Very quiet, peaceful, with huge wash and sometimes running water. Just a beautiful place to relax and get away. Pool is not heated in the winter. Home has huge windows and a disappearing sliding glass door, to bring the outside in. Huge mesquites surround the backyard where lots of birds gather. Outside patio on the banks of the Agua Caliente wash with stone fireplace to watch the stars as they come out at night. Roadrunners, quails, hummingbirds, coyote howling, beautiful sunsets almost every night. The Agua Caliente Park just south of property with natural hot spring and wild ducks. Mt. Lemmon is just north, and only takes a half hour to reach the top, temperature drops 20 degrees, pine trees, ski lift and three restaurants. The smells of the desert after a rain is incredible. Short ride down a dirt road to this desert oasis...

About Joe Klein or Barbara Powell

Hi...this home was a bank repo, completely torn apart..I added this addition in 2007...tried to leave the desert untouched. I originally came to Tucson from Annapolis Md., grew up in a harbor on the Severn River. Moved here in 1982 to get away from the cold...Love Tucson... I am a watercolor artist and the home is full of my paintings. The master bedroom has African animal art and the guest bedroom has birds from all over the world. I manage this home with my guy Joe...Joe knows how to fix everything, he is a world of knowledge and if there is a problem he knows how to fix it. We live on the property, in the main house.

Joe Klein or Barbara Powell purchased this cottage in 2000

Why Joe Klein or Barbara Powell chose Tucson

My place is very remote but close to town. I own five acres of mostly untouched desert. The Catalina Mtns. are so close and the way the light changes the shadow every morning and night is incredible...The sunsets are the best in the world, almost every evening. Relax out back and watch as the birds come in for their dinner's and experience the sunsets. Lots of coyote sounds early mornings and late evenings. The property has a huge wash, that runs a lot, sometimes it is a raging river. Great place to hike and go up into the canyons. There is an incredible park just south of property, has a natural spring that feeds the ponds, lots of wild ducks, and birds that visit in the winter...My property is only half an hour to the top of Mt. Lemmon. Pine trees and 20 degrees cooler at the top. Awesome drive with lots of scenic spots along the way and picnic areas. I have been to Mt. Lemmon lots of times...and have found a great place to stop along the is called Box Alder, always no one there, picnic tables, bathroom, and lots of blue and black birds. This home is so quiet at night, that you can hear the water running in the wash, coyotes howl, roadrunners click, owls hoot, the wind thru the mesquites. There is a huge pool with diving board for summer fun too. We have just put in a really nice spa tub. Down Tanque Verde Rd. to the east, is some great 4 wheel driving experiences. The road turns into Redington Road and goes on forever.

Also I have another rental on VRBO, the number is 612960 The unit is up a private spiral staircase....

What makes this cottage unique

Experience complete privacy, away from the maddening world, hear no noises except the birds, coyotes and the wind. Go down to the gazebo and start a roaring fire... Listen to the sounds of the desert and watch the stars come out like you have never experienced them!!! We also have another property on this location...the VRBO # is 612960

We just put in a 5 person spa, we will keep it heated...and Joe keeps the chemicals just right...

An oasis in the desert

  • 5 of 5

We just returned from a three week stay in Tucson at Caliente Creek Ranch. Located in the northeast section of Tucson, on a gated five acre private property, with stupendous views of the four mountain range surrounding Tucson, it was safe, secure, quiet... perfect for us two in our late sixties. We had to drive to everything but that didn't matter as Tucson is very spread out and anywhere you were you most likely would have to drive. We could walk less than 1/4 mi to back entrance of Agua Caliente Park across the street from the property's 1/10 mi long driveway, we could bike to the Safeway 6 mi away. 49er Golf Course was less than 5 mi away (cheap after 200 pm), two different hiking trails within Saguaro NP East were less than 20 min drive (one entrance off Tanque Verde Rd and the other off Broadway). The owners were lovely people and had a dog named Jack who was so friendly we coud take him for walks (his fave spot is the Caliente Creek and the wash behind the property) and he visited us frequently. The cottage is attached to the owner's house/residence yet we felt quite removed. The owners welcomed us with a bottle of wine and when we left they presented us with a goody bag of water, candy, grapes and cookies for our long journey home!! Barbara and Joe are kind, welcoming and willing to help us with whatever we needed (suggestions about trails, golf courses, restaurants, movie theatres, etc.). Very pleased with our choice of place to stay for three weeks. Wifi a little spotty at times, plenty of hot water. We enjoyed watching hummingbirds and quail feeding. We saw coyote, roadrunners in the neighborhood. Kitchen well equipped and previous guests left staples for us, as did we when we left.

Will need a car unless you are an avid biker (bike lanes and trails everywhere, along with "share the road signs"). Suggested places to visit: Old Tucson movie set, Kitt Peak Observatory, Sabino Canyon hike (get there before 830 am for parking), Pima Air Museum (get there when door opens), dinner at the Arizona Inn... we golfed at 49ers and Rolling Hill GC (very walkable somewhat short course). Thanks to Barbara and Joe for making us feel so welcome!!

A comfortable cottage in the Tucson desert

  • 5 of 5

The cottage is extremely functional for up to four people although more could be accommodated. It is well appointed and well stocked for your cooking needs. The 12 foot door that disappears into the wall when opened makes the inside and outside spaces have a very open feeling.

Barbara and Joe were  very welcoming and accommodating to our few requests. They were there when they were needed, but respected tenant privacy at other times. Jack, their dog, would visit whenever he felt like it, but he was welcome as he has a sweet disposition.

Tucson is spread out over a vast area and mostly to the north and east of the Interstate highways. This property is in the extreme northeast corner of Tucson. Therefore, getting to various sites in Tucson can take from 30 minutes to an hour. If you come for the serenity and quietness the property has to offer this is not a problem.
