This 1200 sqft colonial apartment will keep you super comfortable during your stay in Cuenca. Enjoy the comforts of a home for what you’d pay for an average hotel (where all you get is a room with a bed and bathroom)!
Following the description of this apartment (at the bottom) is a 'checklist' of things you might consider when examining other properties. Be sure to look it over so you get the RIGHT FIT FOR YOU!!!
Now, about this apartment.....
Situated in an old colonial building located smack dab in the middle of El Centro. Everything you want is just steps outside your door.
- Close to the blue-domed Cathedral, flower market, and Parque Calderon, the center of the Universe when it comes to Cuenca’s activities, festivals, tourism office, tour bus, etc.
- EZ walk to a large Mercado featuring local grown fruits and vegetables plus meats and seafood.
- Lots of eateries from cheap $3 lunches to upscale restaurants.
- Pharmacies, medical/dental offices, and hospital all nearby.
- Want a taxi or a bus? They're ripe for picking anywhere you happen to be in El Centro.
- Nearby is a plaza lined with Otovalan vendors selling beautiful fabrics, clothing, shawls, scarves, tapestries, etc.
The apartment has been completely remodeled with new flooring, plumbing, toilets, furniture, paint, bed, etc etc.
The living room is huge, with 10ft ceilings, large L-shaped sofa, entertainment center, and large windows to let in lots of light. Enjoy the flat screen TV (with HDMI ports so you can watch (even USA TV stations!) from your laptop), or more than 100 DVD's of your choosing to play on the DVD player.
The bedroom is large with a Queen bed, full bath, and walk-in closet (rare in Cuenca!).
The kitchen is fully stocked with everything you’ll need (except food!)…gas cooktop/oven, microwave, toaster, toaster oven, blender, coffee maker, food processor, and tall refrigerator. Coffee/tea, condiments, cooking oil and spices are also provided.
The really NOTABLE feature of this apartment is the HUGE sun room with soaring skylights! In this area, you can relax, take a nap, read a book, do laundry, or surf the Net at a work desk. When it rains, it's romance at its best to sit in the sun room and listen to the roar of the rain hitting the ceilings overhead. Also in this area a 2nd FULL bath.
Need to do laundry? No problemo as you have your own washer AND dryer (also rare here) in the apt. OH!! A cell phone AND internet are provided, too!
Yet another feature (as if more is needed!) is the rooftop terrace (exclusive use for my guests only) with table and chairs, and great views daytime or nighttime.
Availability: Please consult the online calendar for dates available vs booked. I keep my calendar current at all times.
Pricing: You'll find the daily cost of this apartment to be less than an average hotel here in Cuenca, especially when you consider the additional expenses of eating out all the time. Ask yourself..."How many nights would I get for the same price, if I stayed at a hotel?”
FULL DISCLOSURE: This building (as is 95% in Cuenca) does not have an elevator. The apartment requires a 2-flight walk-up.
Pickup is provided whether you arrive in Cuenca at the airport, bus terminal, or van service.
A CHECKLIST WHEN VIEWING OTHER PROPERTIES:
* Location. Can you walk to most everything you'll want to do, or do you always need to take a taxi or bus?
* Does the unit have hot water at the kitchen sink, bathroom sink (rare here), and piped to the shower?
* Does the shower have direct-piped hot water, or one of those electric shower-heads that produce only lukewarm water (known as 'widow-makers')?
* Does the unit have an oven or just a cooktop?
* Does it have both a washer and dryer IN the unit?
* Does it have a tiny fridge? Is it sitting on the floor where you darn near have to get on your knees to get anything?
* If 2 people are sleeping in the same bed, can they walk around both sides of the bed? Is the bed FULL or QUEEN?
* Is the bed(s) located in the SAME space as the living room?
* Does the furniture look comfortable or is it rigid and formal and/or crammed together in a tiny space?
* Does the kitchen provide all the tools, gadgets, and small appliances you'll want to 'get the job done'?
These kinds of things can make the difference between an 'okay' experience and a great one. Closely examine the photos in each listing and look for details in the descriptive write-up.
I am originally from the Seattle, WA, USA area. I've lived in Cuenca since early 2011.
Great apartment fabulous stay. We loved it here. Dano was really helpful. He left fresh orange and other delicious juice for is in the fridge. The plants roof terrace and art work everywhere . Plus space and loads of towels nice bed sheets kitchen etc
Our stay at Dano's Apartment 1 (Corazon) was great. It was very large, clean and well decorated. The bed was extremely comfortable....giving us a good night's sleep each and every night. The walk in closet was a bonus, making it easy to unpack rather than living out of a suitcase. The sun room was a little chilly in the mornings but what a refreshing change from the Florida heat we left behind.
The location couldn't have been better. It was so convenient to have the craft market at our doorstep, the Park, Cathedral and flower market a block away and our favorite bakery and tienda within a few steps. A five minute walk and you were at the river....beautiful! We did a fantastic day hike in Cajas National Park and spent another amazing day at the Zoo.
Dano went above and beyond the call of duty by assisting us with transportation arrangements from Guayaquil to Cuenca. He was readily available to answer any questions we may have had, providing us with helpful advice and suggestions.
We enjoyed our Cuenca vacation tremendously and even though we were away for a month, we felt right at home in our apartment.
Great location in a plaza that houses a craft market. One block from the main Park Calderon, about 5 blocks to the river. Location can not be beat! The apartment was very clean and spacious! It is technically a one bedroom, but it is big enough to take advantage of the fold out sofa. The kitchen was well equipped. I enjoyed people watching from the balcony.
Dano was readily available to answer questions and was proactively informative, an excellent host. I would recommend this to friends and family! The plaza does get quiet at night, so consider this if you expect to get home late and are planning on walking. You may want to take a taxi.
We spent the Christmas week in Cuenca. Dano was our host and we truly felt like his guests. This apartment is squeaky clean, spacious and nicely furnished. The kitchen has everything needed to make delicious food that you can buy at the local market. We enjoyed shopping and cooking at home -- a very welcome break from our hotel stay in Guayaquil. Best of all -- breakfast on the roof deck which is a lovely and serene spot, also well maintained with cactus plants, beautiful ceramics and colorful paint. Even thought the apartment in located right on a plaza sleeping at night was quiet and restful because the bedroom is away from the front windows. The apartment has lots of charming features and is very comfortable. It has a washer and dryer! A luxury item we probably take for granted. The location in el Centro is perfect -- so easy to walk to the river, out for coffee and to see the sights just by walking around. Dano made every effort to make our stay pleasant. Before we arrived, he helped us figure out transportation to Cuence and picked us up at the van location when we arrived. He was very responsive to all our questions and shared useful information -- like finding a place called Joe's Secret Garden where we enjoyed Christmas Eve dinner. He has a comprehensive resource book he has written over the years with detailed guidance on local restaurants, events, and insights into having an enjoyable time in Cuenca. We loved our day at the local spa -- so relaxing. His enthusiasm for the quality of life in Cuenca is so clear and it is nicely balanced by deep knowledge of the area and things to do and not to do. We felt very welcomed and safe in Cuence and look forward to a return visit and a longer stay with Dano.
Several years ago I rented an apartment in Paris for a month. When I arrived there was a note on the mailbox to go across the street to a local bar to retrieve the key to the apartment. Climbing up four flights of stairs with a very heavy and bulky suitcase (one woman/one month/too much clothing!!!) I opened the door to find every inch of space covered with wet sheets! It took me three weeks to discover the washing machine...under the cutting board in the kitchen and I had to buy glasses and a mug for my coffee. So, what a relief to find Dano waiting for me at the airport and being my guide for the first hour after I landed in Cuenca, with a much smaller suitcase might I add. He walked me through the apartment and explained the different doors and their locking procedures which was a great help.
The first thing I noticed was the apartment was spotless and exactly as represented in the photos...see Truth in Advertising heading. The second thing was the washer and dryer. I had been traveling for 10 days before I got to Cuenca so those appliances were a welcome sight. I didn't do any cooking while there but the kitchen was very well planned and filled with any kind of appliance or tool that I would have needed were I to cook. The walk in closet was as big as a family of four or five could have ever needed and I was very happy to see there were extra blankets, even though I didn't need them. The bedroom was very quiet and I heard absolutely no noise the entire time I was there and I'm a very light sleeper. There were two bathrooms, one I never used, and gratefully all the hot water I could have needed plus a really good shower head. The only thing I would have liked would have been one of those wall magnifying mirrors for an "old broad" to put her makeup on with.
So, to me, the two best parts were the living room and it's terrace and the upstairs outside room, bigger than a terrace! I loved taking my coffee in the morning to the terrace off the living room and watching all the activity taking place in the market down below. When I got around to my yogurt and fruit breakfast, I took that up to the next floor to a very comfortable table and chairs and lots of sun. I found yogurt and granola within a two or three block walk of the apartment plus a huge market filled with any kind of fruit imaginable.
Not fair, ran out of room! I would recommend this place to anyone and would look forward to going back again with great pleasure!
We stayed in Dano's apartment for 3 days (unfortunately cut short due to unforeseen circumstances). We were very impressed with Dano right from the beginning - before we even arrived. He personally picked us up from the airport and gave us a brief tour of the city on our drive to the apartment. He had also sent us a copy of the apartment 'bible' in advance of our stay - an extensive and appreciated resource of info on the apt facilities, things to see in Cuenca, best restaurants, what to avoid, tips for travellers, etc. We relied on it. Dano's apartment included basic 'staples' such as condiments, coffee, laundry soap, toiletries, etc. He had a large inventory of DVDs, maps, and even a local cell phone for us to use. We felt very accommodated and prepared for our stay. When we arrived in the apartment, fresh roses were in the bedroom and we were immediately drawn into the spacious location with lots of light and a tremendous view of Plaza San Francisco. The apartment was very clean, and in a great central location. We were moving onto Quito directly upon leaving Cuenca and Dano also graciously provided tips for us while in Quito (well outside what he needed to do). There is little to say by way of do differently other than perhaps a recommendation to consider a wifi booster for better signal while using the wifi in the living room and on the balcony. Really though, this was a small thing in the scheme of it all. Would strongly recommend this apartment and this owner to anyone visiting Cuenca, Ecuador. The perfect host.
We had a great stay at this apartment. From first contact to after our departure Dano was very helpful and gave us a lot of useful information, including events taking place during our stay as well as places to visit and stay after we left Cuenca.
Dano met us at the bus station and took us to the apartment, it is in a secure building with 2 doors prior to the door to the apartment.
The apartment itself was clean and is very spacious and had everything we needed, it was a home away from home for the 11 days we were there. The balcony was great, being able to open the doors and watch the market activity below.
It is centrally located, the cathedral is a very short walk and everything else is within easy reach. Whilst it is in the centre of Cuenca we found the bedroom to be quiet being set back from the front of the building.
There was a problem with the internet towards the end of our stay, we contacted Dano and he got the engineers out to fix it.
We really enjoyed our stay here and it will be our first choice if we return to Cuenca.
Everything is right outside your front door.
