Not Ready for Prime Time

  • 1 of 5

Day One, owner 1 1/2 hours late for first rendezvous to guide us to house, which meant we were standing on the sidewalk in the hot sun. Advertised as 10 minutes to town - turned out to be 10 miles, five of which is on washboard, potholed gravel/sand - so beware, it eats cars. Still Day One - got there, no electricity, no water, no working fridge. Water an ongoing problem for the entire month - owner would need to be contacted and he would drive out into the desert somewhere and magically we would have water. But couldn't rely on having a shower or anything - kept a bucket of water next to the toilet. By the way, bathroom walls don't go to the ceiling, so can be 'noisy' if you get my drift. Also, the roof is porous to insects so we got eaten alive with mosquitoes. No mosquito net provided. Fridge is a 30 year old non-functioning propane piece of work - the upper freezer portion worked, that's all. Owner dragged over a coleman picnic chest. We had to bring ice in because owner often forgot, so we had to drain the water out and provide ice daily. Lots of spoiled food. Stove was absolutely filthy. Owner lives in a 70's trailer with plywood on the windows about 50 feet from the front door. About 2 weeks in, he left in the middle of the night - flew to california - didn't bother telling us - left his non-English speaking mexican carpenter (who lives in town) in charge of fixing water, so we were without much of the time. Electricity got sorted out after a week of broken and borrowed power inverters (solar) and dragging a gas generator over from his trailer. Day Two we woke up to three heavily armed policemen walking across the front yard on their way to owner's trailer, looking (and finding) an alleged stolen generator. Also, no wifi. Only if you buy a wifi stick from one of the local cell phone places and buy a plan and then its over your cell phone. Also, were told its a ten minute walk to the beach - that would be if you sprinted and with a machete. Closest beach is a bumpy fifteen minute car ride. Oh, and the ancient propane hot water tank blew up - so no hot water for 72 hours - strong smell of propane inside the house. I could go on, but suffice it to say that the description is nothing like the reality. Owner commented "Its Mexico." He eventually refunded $450.00. The community is great, and this could be too, if the owners got their act together. And told the truth about the place. During our stay, at least, it wasn’t ready for prime time.
