About Duane and Shelley Sims

Duane and Shelley Sims purchased this cabin in 2014

Why Duane and Shelley Sims chose Black Mountain

This is our dream part time mountain home. We've been vacationing in the Black Mountain and Asheville area for the past 8 years. Every year we find more reasons to love this region. Good restaurants, coffee shops, breweries and crafts abound, all reasonably priced. We enjoy a day of hiking or fun in the city, and then eagerly return to our tranquil home and relax on the deck or in front of the fireplace.

What makes this cabin unique

The scenic drive from Black Mountain to our property will fill your senses with nature's beauty. Pastures and the valley are surrounded by mountains, You are likely to see deer and turkeys as you climb the paved road in Laurel Ridge to our home. You may be lucky enough to see a bear on your drive. Enjoy your morning coffee on the deck overlooking gorgeous mountains. Dine on the picnic table on the deck, or relax with a local beer, appetizers and cool mountain air after a rewarding hike or a busy day in Asheville.

Laurel Ridge Mountain home stay

Thank you so much. Beautiful home and everything that we needed was there. We were in the house with one other family each with a 12 yo child and there was plenty of space for all of us to be comfortable. The owners were very generous in helping us find good hiking options for our boys. The view was amazing and we enjoyed Black Mountain tremendously. Hoping to return very soon. Thank you again.

Fantastic for a family vacation in the mountains!

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful stay at Hiker's Haven with my parents and 3 year-old. The house is spacious, comfortable, tastefully decorated and very well-equipped. We all slept well, and the bed in the loft adjacent to the upstairs bedroom was well-designed to accommodate a family with young children. The WiFi was quick and reliable (unfortunately I did need to work on this trip.)

We took walks near the house, explored the river down below, played board games, read from their awesome collection of children's books, baked and generally had the perfect family getaway.

Shelley and Duane could not have been more helpful. They left a comprehensive guide to the area, and gave us lovely recommendations for child-friendly hikes in the area. At their suggestion, one of the highlights of our trip was a hike to Catawba Falls.

The house is about a 12 minute drive up the mountain from the town which has some great restaurants, shops and venues with live music. The drive was beautiful, and although a bit steep at certain points, manageable and so pleasant. It was an easy drive into Asheville.

Morning coffee on the balcony overlooking the mountains was so relaxing. I wish I could go back tomorrow. Thank you, Shelley and Duane!

Hikers' Haven was the perfect house for our family to enjoy a week in the mountains.

  • 5 of 5

The house location makes heading into Black Mountain and Asheville easy and convenient. Our family enjoyed going on many hikes and white water rafting! The house was always so nice to come home to after a day outdoors. Hikers' Haven has a well equipped kitchen and comfortable living space. Our family also enjoyed a day of relaxing at the house! We read, played games and enjoyed the peacefulness of Hikers' Haven! Thank you to the Simms and their hospitality! We had a great week!

Great place to stay if you love to hike!

  • 5 of 5

This cabin is really beautiful, clean, well appointed and has nice views of the mountains.

I strongly recommend this cabin for those who like to spend more time outdoors on hiking trails than combating Ashville traffic . It is 35 min from Blue ridge parkway and gets you to the scores of spectacular trails on this parkway and allows you return to retire for the night with the least of hassles. It is centrally located to other major attractions including those in Cashiers NC. In three days we walked four trails and also went to Cashiers, NC and walked on the foothills trail down to the base i of the waterfalls.

The owners are extremely nice, kind and polite and went an extra mile to ensure our comfort and safety.

Beautiful Mountain Home

  • 5 of 5

My family and I stayed at Hiker's Haven over the Presidents Day weekend. It is an absolutely beautiful house with phenomenal views and fantastic owners. The house itself is new and everything about it was designed to be a home away from home. Beautiful open layout with a super comfortable sectional in front of the fireplace and a kitchen that is extremely well-stocked and has everything that you could ask for. The house felt very private despite being close (12 min) drive to the town of Black Mountain, as well as the Blue Ridge Parkway and a short (30 minute) drive to Asheville. Finally the owners could not have been more accommodating. They quickly responded to all of our emails and were extremely helpful in providing information for restaurants, hikes and places of interest, etc. They even went so far as to check up on us when the local weather was forecasting a winter storm moving in. I can't say enough good things about this house and it's owners. We would certainly come back again.

Wonderful Mountain Get-A-Way!

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I rented Hiker's Haven for a few week get-a-way from the Florida heat. It was excellent! The cabin (it is so much more than just a cabin) is very well done. We were the first renters and everything was so fresh and new. The downstairs Master Bedroom, Bath and walk-in closet made it so convenient for us. The open floor plan for the kitchen, dining and great room was all very well done and flowed so well. We had our son, daughter-in-law and 2 grandchildren visit for two weekends. The upstairs bedroom with its own bath (like having two masters) was great for them and the kids slept easily in the loft on the daybeds. We all enjoyed the porch both in the morning for fresh air. The kids like playing at the picnic table and walking along the road. We found a really nice path near the fire station and our 5 year old grandson had a fun walk along it finding wild strawberries. Hiker's Haven does live up to its name of being a Haven and great get-a-way. It is at an altitude with cooler temperatures. On the drive in there is a swimming hole the locals use, and we stopped one day just to cool off our feet. Plus on our visit we several bears in the area. That was exciting - glad we were in the car each time. Hiker's Haven is also a great location for visiting the local sights, small towns, and scenic roads.
