About Justine Shapiro

Rabbi Sydney Mintz is a Rabbi at Temple Emanu-El in San Francisco. In 1989 she moved to the Bay Area from Chicago and soon became enamored with Mendocino County. Justine and Sydney fell in love 4 years ago and they live together in San Francisco with their sons. Justine grew up in Berkeley California and for 10 years traveled the world as the host of the TV travel show GlobeTrekker. Though she was born in one of the most beautiful places on the planet (South Africa) and has traveled through over 40 countries, Mendocino county is one of the most stunning spots she has ever set foot upon, for both the land and its people are radiant, and grounded, creative and kind. Justine produces and directs documentary films. Justine was nominated for an Academy Award for PROMISES, a documentary about Palestinian and Israeli children.

Justine Shapiro purchased this house in 2014

Why Justine Shapiro chose North Coast

Sydney and Justine hoped to buy a small piece of land in the region they both loved the most: Mendocino county. A friend insisted that they see the Albion Schoolhouse, which had just gone on the market. Sydney and Justine stepped into the Albion Schoolhouse and to their utter astonishment, fell in love with EVERYTHING about it.

What makes this house unique

Mendocino County is one of the planet's most pristine, protected and therefore, stunning spots. 147 miles from San Francisco to Albion, this lovely drive - which takes about 3 hours introduces you to the varied landscapes of Northern California. The route takes you through pastoral lands, then vineyards, through beautiful Anderson Valley, the forests, and winding into the lovely town of Boonville (with its unique shops and delicious ice-creams and meals). 45 minutes from Boonville the road opens onto the dramatic coastline and (voila!) you are at The Albion Schoolhouse.

You are far enough away from the Bay Area that you will notice that the air is fresh, your rhythms align to a pace in tune with nature, and within in a short time you'll find your mind shifting into a familiar but long forgotten gear. You'll marvel at simple wonders: clouds, sparkles on the sea, grasses that shimmer in wind and sunlight.

From The Albion Schoolhouse you are minutes from stunning coastal hikes, pristine beaches, world class restaurants and the best that cafes anywhere have to offer by way of coffee and baked goods.

The town of Mendocino feels far more like a victorian sea side village but with all the amenities one desires: unique shops, art galleries and excellent restaurants and grocery stores. Don't miss the breath-taking hikes along the Mendocino's headlands, the trail heads are right there in town.

Mendocino offers other outdoor adventures: canoeing, fishing, kayaking, mountain biking.

We offer 2 options for your stay at The Albion Schoolhouse: Option 1: CONNECTED (wifi, tv, landline). And Option 2: DISCONNECTED (landline only… remember the good old days?).

a magical place

  • 5 of 5

10 members of our blended and extended family (ages 10 to 65) stayed at the albion schoolhouse for 2 nights in late july for a family wedding on the medicino coast. for many of us, it was the first time to the area, and we were all deeply moved by the natural beauty of that section of the california coast. for us, the schoolhouse was the perfect landing spot after long days socializing with dozens of guests. we played board games (on the biggest and best scrabble board we had ever seen!); improvised bursts of music on the stage with the piano (in tune, by the way!) and drums; sipped excellent mendicino coffee and prepared breakfast in the large, well equipped kitchen; enjoyed cocktails and tapas in the great room before heading out to the wedding festivities; and slept deeply in comfy beds. the schoolhouse was beautifully furnished, modern, clean and completely charming, all at once. we all hope to return again to this magical property for another family escape in that magical part of the world. thanks justine, for making the rental experience so easy, and for having the vision to restore the schoolhouse for others to enjoy.

Fabulous Schoolhouse!

  • 5 of 5

The Albion Schoolhouse was amazing! It's in such a beautiful location with so much to do in the area. And the schoolhouse itself is absolutely beautiful! We were able to make a glorious meal in the chefs kitchen. There was more than enough room for all of our family. We had a family style concert in the library/stage room, with professional instruments. The bedrooms are so comfy and the bathtubs are to die for! (although I will say, if you have anyone in your party that has any kind of disability getting in and out of the tub/shower is not advised)

We are planning another trip to the schoolhouse next year and we will.stay for longer. There is so much to do.in the area and the accommodation's are so lovely and welcoming. We just have to.come back!!!

Amazing and such a fun place to stay

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at the Albion house with two families over the 4th of July weekend and we absolutely LOVED the house. The owners are a delight to work with and very helpful with recommendations on restaurants and things to do.

The house is in a great location and short drive to Mendocino and many of the local activities. It is also a short walk to the beach thru a RV park.

The school house has been meticulously and uniquely remodeled and has an incredible energy. We love to cook and the kitchen had everything we needed to make some amazing meals. The home is filled with organic soaps and cleaners and incredibly comfortable beds and sheets.

The adults enjoyed talking by the grand fireplace, while the kids played in the great room on the drums and toys provided in the house. We we enjoyed family meals of eating and praying together and appreciating the love that went into creating such a wonderful home.

I would 100% recommend staying here and Mendocino is such a fun and unique town to visit and we loved all of the organic and delicious food at many of the restaurants.

Beautiful, spotlessly clean and unique place to stay

  • 5 of 5

We recently spent a weekend up at the Albion School House and found it beautiful, unique and extremely comfortable.

The kitchen is amazing and a chef's dream in terms of the professional stove, equipment and layout - I cooked up a storm all weekend and had everything I needed. The bathrooms are beautifully done with great amenities and the bedding was soft and luxurious.

The house is bright and airy, spotlessly clean and thoughtfully furnished. The fact that they allow pets was a huge plus since we were traveling with a pup.

Justine, the owner could not have been nicer or more accommodating when I made a VERY last minute reservation ( the night before).

She made sure that her house manager, Pamela came by the house before we arrived to turn on lights, since we arrived so late, and to make sure that we could get in and were comfortable. Pamela called me the next morning to say hello and offer any help we might need over the weekend.

Justine also sent me an amazing list of all types of restaurants, activities and things to do during our stay.

They made us feel so well tended to and vested in us enjoying ourselves.

Clearly they LOVE this house.

You do need a car or a mode of transportation to get into Mendocino whilst staying here.

There is however a market within walking distance and beautiful trails to explore all around the house.

Thank you for such a great, relaxing weekend!
