Bedrooms 4
Property type cottage
Minimum Stay 3 - 4 nights

About the property

4 bdrm 2 bath. kitchen with great rm, screened porch, patio, hot tub,

This beautiful cottage nestled among tall pine trees and landscaped shade gardens has character and unique design. One sees a friendly screened porch with table and benches for breakfast gatherings and a wicker sofa with two large wicker chairs upon entering the house. The great room is comprised of living room with gas fire place, large television cabinet, a dinning room and open kitchen. Twin comfortable sofas can be used for sleeping in addition to a sleeper sofa in adjoining room.

French doors from the dinning area lead to the very cheerful three season room where games and a small bar area may be of entertainment. Additional sofa and seating space add to living areas; white cabinets with shelves provide for storage. A small table for four is appropriate for intimate dining under a fashioned canopy candelabra.

A bedroom with queen-sized bed and master bedroom with desk space connect to a spa bath. Walk in shower and jacuzzi tub are accessible. A door connects the master bedroom and second bedroom so the two might share a walk-in closet. The idea originally housed an office and study area. The second bedroom opens to the three season room and is ideal for families with young children.

Outdoors, a family sized hot tub is set off of a patio and deck. The garden provides color and beauty, recreation space, a fire pit, and outdoor reading areas.

3rd bedroom has a queen bed and antique furniture, closet space.

17 foot Hallway connects the kitchen 3 bedrooms and laundry room. nice circular flow to the rooms.

There is a staircase built by a Czech craftsman with unique shelving and cabinets under the staircase leading up to a loft overlooking the great room. Board games, puzzles and DVD's, books and old magazines are stored in the units under the stairwell are available for guest enjoyment. The loft consists of a play area and a unique small slanted pink wall bedroom with skylight. A real sweet hideaway. A double bed is in the bedroom and a twin bed and a small child's bed are in the play area.

The house is well equipped for the best cooks. I love to cook.

Pots and pans and all baking equipment. Small food processor, coffee maker, carafe, strainers Fully stocked with dishes ( heavy plates in the credenza) and dish towels and Automatic dish washer soap. A change of bedding: sheets, pillow cases, and warm blankets are located in the big walk in closet for the master bedroom and adjoining bedroom on top shelves. Insect repellents and first aid kit are located in the master bath and guest bath. also leaving most used condiments...ketchup and mustard and spices as most guests have to spend a fortune if they like to cook. Most people like a clean home so I am leaving a vacuum cleaner, mops, brooms, and non toxic cleaning supplies for our guests.

Table napkins and Mats are on a wicker stand in the dinning room.

For the outdoors grill the cover must be over the grill when the grill is cooled down. Grilling equipment and insect spray are inside the outdoor storage box inside the pergola. There is

wood for the fire pit in the wood storage bin.

There is an umbrella and 3-4 beach chairs available for use on the beach.

Going to the beach:

In the back yard which is fenced in on three sides (one side by flowering shrubs and bushes) and very private there is a shed and rack for wood storage. Behind the shed along the fence there round wood cuts that make a walking path to the easements for walking along the sidewalk through the 5 small cottages. This was once one lot with the 5 little cottages and the big cottage on a double lot, between Nolan Ave and Lakeshore Rd. A walking and parking easement was given to the cottages which were 'landlocked' at the time this property was purchased. In other words I have an easement to walk through the cottages sidewalk and they have an easement to park and walk down the path along the split rail fence.

When you walk down the sidewalk past these 5 little cottages ( about 35 yards ) you will come to Lake shore Rd. Look right and you will see a white fence about 1/4 block down the road. THAT IS THE ENTRANCE TO MILLER BEACH! signs at the entrance state NO DOGS, FIRES, OR ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGES ALLOWED ON THE BEACH.

The GARAGE IS NOT AVAILABLE for guest use!

Sand could be washed off from feet and body by a hose behind the hot tub or the side hose at the side of the house. Your beach items could be stored together along the fence near the shed as you return to the house.

Things to do and things to see:

There are 6 public beaches including Warren Dunes State park, Silver Beach in St Joseph which has a fantastic Carousel for kids and adults. Bring your bikes! and bike helmets!many biking trails. Wine tasting at the many vineyards and a wine trail for those who want to sample and drive through the lovely countryside and farm areas. There are many golf clubs private and public in the area so bring your golf clubs...local papers have discount coupons for golfing.

Captain Mikes in Bridgeman on Red arrow Hwy is great for kids who like go carts and other fun rides , many places for shopping and antique shopping along the highway and Three Oaks which also has Vicker's Movie Theater for Foreign and Independent Films and Acorn Live Theater which hosts many accomplished and famous musicians, actors, comedians etc. Also many art galleries in Three Oaks will nourish and satisfy your thirst for any kind of art.

About Donna Dutton

First time ...just newly listing my home on VRBO in 2014. My childhood was spent in the southwest side of Chicago. I graduated from Maria High School and University of Illinois at CC Campus. I worked in various social service agencies and would escape to Union Pier for relief from the very stressful work.

This area was a place I could come to relax, read, walk the beach at sunrise and think, have a glass of wine and listen to the soothing waves at sunset. BIKING THE ROADS WAS ALWAYS A SHEAR DELIGHT ON WEEKDAYS WHEN THE ROADS WERE PRACTICALLY EMPTY. I was never a big shopper but for anyone who loves nature this was the place. I have a Kayak and one big enjoyment is kayaking on the Gallien River 5 minutes from my home. The Costa Rica river trip I recently took had monkeys and birds. The Gallien has no monkeys but about as much wildlife and so close to home.

I enjoy the art scene here in' Harbor Country' Many great art happenings in this area, for foreign and independent films and live theater . I can take the South Shore Train into Chicago whenever I want to visit with friends or go to concerts . Can't beat the price senior rate $4.50 each way and no parking fees.

Donna Dutton purchased this cottage in 2000

Why Donna Dutton chose Southwest

Our family has vacationed on these lovely beaches for 40 years. Living in Chicago Beverly and then Palos Heights was a short 1-1/2 hour ride here. We rented vacation cottages for the first 10 yrs since the year I was pregnant with my first child. Memories of picnics on the beach with family and friends, Backyard BBQ's, smores and bonfires and sunsets and early morning jogs along the beach with our golden retriever has bound my heart and soul to this area. The kids loved to go to the local orchards to pick blueberries, peaches , cherries, apples and go for long hayrides in the countryside come fall. Memories of family fun, playing in the sand, building sandcastles and frolicking in the in whitecap waves as they crashed on the beach.

I loved this area so much, I bought a business here 20 years ago so I could spend my summers on the beach, (or so I thought) and enjoy the beautiful clean white snow in the winter. This last winter was bitter cold and for the first time ever we had white sparkling roads throughout the winter. great for sledding, cross country skiing or even snowshoeing. Winters vary for snow conditions but the warm fireplace is great for lounging with a good book.

I have lived in this house since I purchased it. I love this house. Together with my daughter, I created a beautiful shady garden as there was nothing here when it was purchased.... I planted over 200 plants, bushes and trees. Many of the plants were sun loving and now are in a shady area and need to be moved to my other place in the Harbor Country area 5 minute drive away. Since I am so close in proximity, you may call me if there is a problem of any kind and I will be there within the hour.

What makes this cottage unique

This house was very close to the beach and the price was right. It was rebuilt and remodeled with cathedral ceilings, skylights, three season room and loft. Later the front deck and back pergola were built and soon after a screened porch was put on the deck. Most guests love the screened porch. The cottage has a good flow, some say a round flow throughout the house. Good house to entertain. The kitchen is easy to work in with everything within reach. You can watch TV in the living room or have a conversation with family at the dining table or counter bar stools while preparing meals. Don't have to feel isolated in the kitchen because you are part of the happening already.

The proximity to the beach is great. You can leave your ' stuff' on the beach and come back to the cottage for a break or lunch or nap and go back in the afternoon for more beach fun. The beach is generally safe and no one here is afraid to leave things like beach chairs and coolers, umbrellas should be taken down and laid on the sand. I would not leave personal items or things that could blow away on the beach because sudden wind or rain could surprise people without warning.

The three season room is the room I like the best. So cozy, comfortable and bright with a gentle breeze blowing from the open windows. I rarely need the air conditioner on...the house is cool because of how it is built...double roof in some sections and high ceilings and good flow through the house.

The patio is great for small group meals (6 chairs) at the umbrella table . The gas grill was purchased 3 years ago and can grill for 10 people easily!

Have good meals, good wine, good laughs good weather and lots of fun on the beach or whatever you experience here in this lovely cottage, dear guests.

Family Memories

  • 5 of 5

The whole family enjoyed our stay. The house was comfortable and private. The private, quite large backyard was wonderful. So glad we chose this property for our family vacation.

Our stay included me, my husband, sister and brother in law and Sadie our cairn terrier.

I have to say that I expected more for the money we spent on this rental. The furniture was all old and mixed matched. And two of the bedrooms didn't have closets and there was only one bedroom with a dresser. So we basicly had to live out of our suitcases. We did not use the second floor as we didn't need it.

The house has a lot of potential but many things needed updating., The bath towels, washcloths and kitchen towels ect. were very old and worn

The TV was also very small for the entertainment center it was in, and made it hard for everyone to see it.

The kitchen was well stocked for a rental. And we did do some cooking, although we were told that some of the essential spices and cooking oil were provided. We did need to use some oil for a recipe and were shocked to find that the oil was dated 2013 and there was a fly inside the bottom of the bottle.

We did enjoy having the beach a couple blocks away, and spent several days relaxing in the sun and searching for stones and sea glass.

If you like to shop, many of the stores are only open certain days and few hours. At least in June, it may change later in the season.

All in all, this is the most we have ever spent on a weekly rental and we have stayed at some close to half the price and we found them to be nicer.

If you have a large family , you do have room to spread out.

We may vacation in the area again but most likely not here..

I'm in love with Union Pier and this lovely home!

  • 5 of 5

This house is the absolute best! I've rented many homes for vacations before, and this is by far my most favorite! I'm very picky and we have five children, and this home met all our needs and wants. It far exceeded our expectations. Donna has put so much into this home and it shows. The backyard with the hot tub and porch is awesome for entertaining. We went to the beach everyday with our five small children and had no problems at all. The walk to the beach is easy and probably less than 5 minutes. The beach is beautiful, and we had it to ourselves the whole week. We saw maybe a couple of families and that was it. All in all, it was our best vacation ever. We made so many memories and we will definitely be coming back next year! My advice for anyone is stop looking and just rent this home!! Thank you Donna for everything!

The house and location was wonderful. A great set up for multiple couples.

  • 5 of 5

We stayed three nights with friends and enjoyed every minute. The fire pit, back and front porches and of course the hot tub were all fantastic. We did more cooking than expected because the kitchen was great and fully stocked. We had a wonderful getaway without ever feeling like we forgot a thing. Highly recommended!

House has everything you need, in the perfect location!

  • 5 of 5

Donna was a wonderful host, and her house is perfect for a winter get away. We had plenty of space, and with 10 women that's saying something. We absolutely loved how close the house was to the wineries and distillery. We spent ample time by the fire place and in the hot tub. We even took a stroll to the beach to see the frozen water. Thanks to Donna and her daughter for their hospitality!

Owner's Response: So the ten of you were comfortable in the house. Wonderful!! Thank you so much for you very great review, Monica! I am glad you got to use the hot tub . It is wonderful in the winter. The warm fireplace sure adds so much to the cozy atmosphere when you return home in the winter's cold. Glad you got to visit the wineries and shops and made use the low rates for your group as well. Thanks also for leaving the house very clean. donna
