Rehabilitation Tax Credits Used to Restore Unusual Gothic Revival-Style House in Beaufort

By John Wood

211 Turner Street, after rehabilitation

Beaufort's most exuberant example of a Gothic Revival-style residence was recently restored using the state and federal rehabilitation tax credits. When the nondescript historic house at 211 Turner St. was purchased, the owners did not realize the architectural gem that was hidden beneath layers of synthetic siding. A series of architectural investigations by HPO Restoration Specialist John Wood revealed the building's original configuration and finishes. The forensic analysis of the building enabled the owners to restore missing features, including the first floor of a central projecting bay and A. J. Downing-inspired window hoods.

We loved this home so much the first time, we decided to come back and stay in the cottage which is in the back behind the house. Since it was just my husband and I, it was perfect! This cottage was stunning. It has a very large bedroom (only 1), a very nice spa like bathroom, a beautifully designed kitchen with granite counters and beautiful fixtures. The living room is just off the kitchen with wonderful newer furniture and even a wall mounted “smart” TV. The cottage had newly tiled floors from front to back and it was simply beautiful! I loved staying in the house the first time we were there, but I think the cottage was perfect for my husband and I! As always the owners were just wonderful! Will be staying again, VERY SOON!

Beautiful house in perfect location!

  • 5 of 5

This is the second time we have stayed in this lovely home. The kitchen is the perfect size to cook for friends and the living room is so inviting! The location is perfect, the water front is only a short walk and there are all kinds of great restaurants, shops and bars that are just a block or two away. The owners are incredibly hospitable and helpful as well (and can make a mean banana bread!!). Thank you so much for having us and making my birthday so special!!

We hope to be back again!!

Best location in Beaufort

  • 5 of 5

Our family rented this house for Thanksgiving. It's beautifully done and the location is the best in Beaufort. We enjoyed being able to easily walk to all restaurants and shops along the waterfront. Because we were so close to town, we also enjoyed the large front porch, where we could chat and watch others going by on their walk into town. And bikes came with the house! There is lots of space and each bedroom had its own, very modern, private bathroom. Great place to celebrate with family.

Beaufort wedding

  • 5 of 5

I rented the Admiral's House for my daughter's wedding party. The girls stayed at the house and we celebrated the rehearsal in the backyard. This is the most wonderful couple that care for this home. They corresponded with me over the year and answered all my questions. We also rented another of their homes and the cottage behind the house. They make the house feel like home and provide you with household items, clean and insect-free rooms, ironing boards, irons, coffee, sugar and dish detergent. Amazing along with great advice as to where to eat and explore. We rode the bikes and set up large tents in the backyard for a fabulous rehearsal dinner. The friends were able to play games, eat and drink and neighbors were gracious. This was the best weekend ever and the Owens are better than perfect owners. They are kind, considerate and warm. If you ever come to Beaufort consider this beautiful property and the Owen's hospitality. Jane Dickerhoff, mother of the bride.

WOW! Perfect! Awesome! Excellant!

Five couples get away! My husband picked out the place for us to stay! You never know what you are going to get! We rent at least 4 or 5 places a year! Let me tell you, we were so pleased with everything. Finding a house that five couples can be comfortable in without spending your life savings can be difficult. This house was perfect. We all had ample amount of space, we all slept, we had everything we needed in the kitchen, and the big table was perfect for our card game! We walked everywhere we wanted to go, and the front and back porches were an extra! We all agreed that we want to go back! In fact, I want to buy the place! The décor was lovely. Oh! Last but not least, it was so very clean! We walked to the grave yard, and walked to Carson's to eat the first night. Watching all the huge yachts come in to dock was really something to see. On Saturday 8 of us had a fishing tournament on Shackelford Banks! The shells from Hurricane Mathew were an extra treat, and the fishing was excellent. After dinner on Saturday night, we all just sat around and talked. We didn't even play cards, we just enjoyed being together! Saturday night was a full moon, and two owls serenaded us stooped on top of the church steeple! Yes, it was a weekend to remember, or maybe even a short story!
