Rehabilitation Tax Credits Used to Restore Unusual Gothic Revival-Style House in Beaufort

By John Wood

211 Turner Street, after rehabilitation

Beaufort's most exuberant example of a Gothic Revival-style residence was recently restored using the state and federal rehabilitation tax credits. When the nondescript historic house at 211 Turner St. was purchased, the owners did not realize the architectural gem that was hidden beneath layers of synthetic siding. A series of architectural investigations by HPO Restoration Specialist John Wood revealed the building's original configuration and finishes. The forensic analysis of the building enabled the owners to restore missing features, including the first floor of a central projecting bay and A. J. Downing-inspired window hoods.

We loved this home so much the first time, we decided to come back and stay in the cottage which is in the back behind the house. Since it was just my husband and I, it was perfect! This cottage was stunning. It has a very large bedroom (only 1), a very nice spa like bathroom, a beautifully designed kitchen with granite counters and beautiful fixtures. The living room is just off the kitchen with wonderful newer furniture and even a wall mounted “smart” TV. The cottage had newly tiled floors from front to back and it was simply beautiful! I loved staying in the house the first time we were there, but I think the cottage was perfect for my husband and I! As always the owners were just wonderful! Will be staying again, VERY SOON!

A perfect home in a perfect location.

  • 5 of 5

A great home in the best location in Beaufort. How wonderful to be welcomed with homemade bread and all the comforts of home. Front porch rockers and swing provided pleasant spot for drinks and conversation. Close to coffee and wine shop, antique shops, and waterfront. We could walk to several restaurants. We hope to return.

Spacious house in great location!

  • 5 of 5

Our party came to Beaufort for a three night stay. The location of this house was great. It was easy to get to the Duke Marine lab for the work part and very easy to get downtown to eat at the restaurants. The house had plenty of bedrooms with private baths and the common areas were very comfortable and spacious. I would like to return and spend more time sitting on the front porch.

Had a great time in Beaufort

  • 5 of 5

The house was great. Plenty of room. Loved having some starter items in the kitchen. That was very helpful. Wonderful location. Owners very nice and responsive. The only things I would suggest is to add blinds in the bed & bathrooms, the 2 bottom level bedrooms have plenty of room for king beds, the wifi did not work while we were there and that could be an easy fix, the back door needs planing- very hard to open and close. But again these would be easy things to fix. It's a great place and we would definitively stay there again. You can walk to everything.

Owner's Response: Hi Dawne Thanks so much for your suggestions. We are happy that you enjoyed your time in Beaufort, NC. Sometimes there are issues with the Wi-Fi in the house. Resetting the modem helps. Next time please call us so we can help if its a problem. The back door has this "sticking" problem when it is HOT. Moisture is not its friend. We have already planed the door. Which, at times causes an issue in the COLD months with it not closing. We continue to look for solutions to this issue. King beds on the first floor has been discussed. lol. Maybe by next year we can make that happen. For more privacy in the bathrooms I have put a glass covering on the windows for privacy but it still lets the light in. We always appreciate our guests sharing ideas to make staying at the Admiral's House a positive experience. Regards Patti & Nelson ~
