Rehabilitation Tax Credits Used to Restore Unusual Gothic Revival-Style House in Beaufort

By John Wood

211 Turner Street, after rehabilitation

Beaufort's most exuberant example of a Gothic Revival-style residence was recently restored using the state and federal rehabilitation tax credits. When the nondescript historic house at 211 Turner St. was purchased, the owners did not realize the architectural gem that was hidden beneath layers of synthetic siding. A series of architectural investigations by HPO Restoration Specialist John Wood revealed the building's original configuration and finishes. The forensic analysis of the building enabled the owners to restore missing features, including the first floor of a central projecting bay and A. J. Downing-inspired window hoods.

We loved this home so much the first time, we decided to come back and stay in the cottage which is in the back behind the house. Since it was just my husband and I, it was perfect! This cottage was stunning. It has a very large bedroom (only 1), a very nice spa like bathroom, a beautifully designed kitchen with granite counters and beautiful fixtures. The living room is just off the kitchen with wonderful newer furniture and even a wall mounted “smart” TV. The cottage had newly tiled floors from front to back and it was simply beautiful! I loved staying in the house the first time we were there, but I think the cottage was perfect for my husband and I! As always the owners were just wonderful! Will be staying again, VERY SOON!

Thanks for making our time extra special!

  • 4 of 5

Dear Mr Owens,

It was a joy to stay in your beautiful home! Thank you for sharing it with us. Thank you for the special touch of color coordinated towels laid out on each bed. That was warm and welcoming. Also, thank you for making check-in and out easy. Not having to strip the beds was wonderful. That may seem like a small thing, but it has always annoyed me to pay a good price to rent a property as well as pay a cleaning fee and still have to strip the beds. So, thank you! We had a delightful time!

So clean and cozy! Everything is very well kept and taken care of.

  • 5 of 5

We had a group of family and friends stay for my wedding weekend. The home is gorgeous! Everything you would expect from an old Beaufort home. Beautifully redone while keeping all the unique crafts of an older home. We had everything we needed for the weekend and it was so convenient to our church and venue (just across the street). It couldn't have worked out any better!

Things that I didn't think existed

  • 5 of 5

Islands of wild horses roaming free makes me want to believe in unicorns. What will I find next? An affordable house I can rent with five bedrooms, each with a queen bed and a private bath? I didn't know that such a thing could exist but there it is in this quaint little coastal town. It is a wonderful old house with a totally equipped kitchen and comfortable living room, all without being too frou-frou. We also rented the adjacent cottage, and six couples cooked together and had family-style breakfasts and lunches around the dining room table. We had dinners at some of the many delightful nearby restaurants, all within easy walking. Our six cars fit well in the lot behind the house.

We had a problem with the plumbing one night and called the owner at 10:30 at night and the problem was solved within an hour. I'd prefer not to have the problem but I was very impressed with the quick response. I recommend the Admiral House highly and I hope our group can gather there again next year.
