"We stayed for just 4 nig...
"We stayed for just 4 nights in apartment 14 of Villino Castellano. One could hardly imagine a better place to stay in Meta.
The Villino Castellano is an impressive 3-storeyed old building, located under the towering mopuntains that surround Meta like a fortress wall. Mr Castellano, the landlord, was kind to meet us at the station (we came by train), and even helped us with one of our suitcases. Meta is so breathtaking, with the see deep down, the mountains all around, with affable shop keepers greeting you from the doorsteps of their shops, that one forgets the (mild) effort of a 10-minute climbing to the Villino Castellano.
The apartment is enormous: it must be at least 45 sqm! Thick stone walls (some 70 or 80 cm thick, I'd say), high vaulted ceilings (Mr Castellano says 4,7 m high), a balcony made of a single slab of marble, large windows with gauzy orange curtains. Very roomy and airy. One window shows you the mountains, over some lemon tree. The other the narrow street beneath. The balconied third window faces a fig tree and a porticoed street.
Mixture of old an new: a chest of drawers that must have seen Garibaldi's times, with a mirror that is stained with time, is almost a museum piece. In contrast, most of the furniture is new an, albeit a bit heterogenous, was chosen with a connoisseur's taste.
Large double bed, with wrought iroon decorations: very comfortable. Smaller bed: good for a child. A sofa that turns out to be a large folding bed.
The kitchen area is well equipped perfectly maintained: large fridge with freezer, enough for one family; an electrical oven; a buffet with assorted dishes and cups.
If you have never operated an electrical range (not the vitroceramic type), then make sure to follow Mr C's instructions for use. The device first appears daunting to operate, or at leas quirky, but it is actually easily tamed!
Some nice touches that show the owner's care for detail: there are some essentials in the kitchen cabinets: salt, pepper, acetto balsamico, sugar, dish washing detergent.
The kitchen utelsils seem to be enough for moderate cooking: pans, pasta cooking pan. We appreciated the existence of a quality can opener and waiter-style corkscrew. If you are used to the Italian espresso --dense, condensed and tiny--, then the size of the coffee maker will no longer intrigue you.
There is a profusion of towels in the bathroom, which is remarkably clean. A word of caution though: the power operated boiler takes a long time to warm. Let it work at least 20 minutes before jumping under the shower. Mind that the same boiler operates the kitchen tap as well.
We were pleased with our stay in Meta, and recommend this place.
A few notes though: 1. since the whole apparment consists of a single ample room, families with children who might wish some privacy might need to look elsewhere.
2. Close and bolt the shutters of the balcony and the window overlooking the street. Otherwise you might be woken at the dead of night by the thunderous din of Meta's garbage collectors! Incerdibly noisy they are, but of course none of this is Mr C's fault.
3. Be prepared to combat some occasional mosquito attacks. As we never travel without our mosquito repellant electrical device, we did not mind them.
All in all, this is a house with a character and a nice starting point for exploring Pompei, Sorrento, Napoli or the Amalfi coast. Don't expect to ahnd aroung Meta too long, though: after a 40 minute walk you can say you discovered it all!
The railway station is indeed some 7-8 minutes' walk away. The trains of the Circumvesuviana run as often as buses elsewhere (some 20-30 minutes apart). Costs are low: 1,10 euro to travel to Sorento. 3,20 euro to Pompei. 3,50 to Naples. From Sorrento, if you are up early enough (which we never were), you may take a boat to Capri (costing a whooping 29 euro per person). There were 24 euro trips to Capri-Positano-Amalfi, but again you had to be in th ...

"Excellent place to travel all around- Naples, Sorrento, Capri , Pompei. Close to train and bus - only 5 min by train and you are in Sorrento, but it was so good to escape from tourist crouds in the evening. Very nice terrace to watch a sunset, sip some wine and have a rest after busy day."

"As a family of four, we really enjoyed our stay in this apartment in Meta. The apartment itself was clean, airy and comfortable with all the facilities that we needed and Luigi, the owner, was welcoming and very helpful. The house has been beautifully restored and benefits from a fantastic roof terrace with excellent views of the Bay of Naples as well as a shady peaceful garden. We liked the village which had shops for supplies and some good, inexpenisve restaurants. It was lively without being very touristy, and was sometimes noisy but never lost its charm for us. We got fit walking up and down to the beach (some parts sandy, some pebbles with free sections squeezed between the large paying sections) where the water was clean and clear but refreshed ourselves with ice creams and cakes on the way back!
Meta is very well placed for visiting Sorrento, Pompeii, Herculaneum, Vesuvius, Positano and Naples using the efficient Circumvesuviana railway service which is only five minutes walk from the apartment. We also used local buses and boats from Sorrento for visits to Amalfi and Capri.
We would recommend the apartment unreservedly and there is plenty to do to fill a fortnight's holiday."

Situated at the very best geografical position both for sea holydays and for touristic (to Capri, Positano, Amalfi etc) or cultural excursions (to Pompei, Paestum, Ercolano etc)
