About John Merritt
While living in Midland, Texas during the 1980's we were missing the mountains. After looking around the southern Rockies we found this lot in Ruidoso, NM. I designed a passive solar log home and had the log package milled in Las Vegas, NM. All of the logs were raised on a single weekend by our family and friends. Those who didn't think they could do something like that were amazed at what a team of hard workers can do. The rest of the work we did mostly ourselves. While we lived in Midland, only 4.5 hours away we used the cabin a lot. So now that we live outside of San Antonio, TX (9+ hrs) and our four daughters are married and we've got the draw of six grandkids we don't get up to our cabin near as much as we would like to even though we're retired. Rather than leave the cabin just sitting there growing old, we've enjoyed sharing it with the VRBO world. The care and respect that it's received has been amazing.
Why John Merritt chose Ruidoso
Though build 30 years ago, a few years ago we accepted that the harsh mountain environment had done its work on the logs and we were forced to paint them. So now we have the Red Log Cabin. We remodeled the inside using reclaimed longleaf yellow pine for the living area wood flooring and tiled the baths and mud room. We were able to reseal the logs interior so it looks as good as new. We only make it up to the Cabin 2-4 times a year. Rather than leave the cabin just sitting there growing old, we've enjoy sharing it with the VRBO world. The care and respect that our Red Cabin has received has been amazing.

Needed lots of upgrades
The cabin was nice but really needed cable TV at the minimum. The VCR movies were really old. The patio umbrella was broken. Will not be staying again.
We loved the look of the house, inside and out. The air conditioner was the main problem for us. The thermostat would not go below 73. It was usually warm while we were there and the cabin never really cooled down. Also, there was no cable TV. There was a TV and a few movies and DVDs to watch. We ended up leaving a day early because of the temperature in the house.
I'm sorry you did not know how to operate the A/C. I was at the cabin in June and the air conditioner was working great. I wish you would have contacted me so we could have worked through any issues you were having. You sent me an email saying that you were leaving a day early because you had some problems back home and had to get back.
We definitely would like to stay in the cabin again.
Amazing and cozy
The view on the balcony is amazingly serene and relaxing - the cabin is so nice and roomy!!
Lovely, peaceful cabin with all the amenities!
We had a great stay at the Red Log Cabin. Very peaceful and serene. Easy access to town and to the road to Ski Apache. We enjoyed the deer that came by each day and the acorn woodpeckers in the trees surrounding the cabin.
The cabin has everything you need for a great stay. We would definitely stay there again.
Great location, quiet, cozy, and just minutes from downtown.
Property owner ensures you have all you need and answers all your questions promptly.
All year round the ladies will love the Ruidoso shopping. There's a broad range of shops from Southwest to south of the border to Indian to cowboy and ranch decor and artwork. The casinos at the Inn of the Mountain Gods and at Ruidoso Downs are always worth a visit for those who like to the gambling but are also great for live entertainment. Between Memorial Day and Labor is horse racing season at Ruidoso Downs. The Downs is noted for its Quarter Horse racing but also has Thoroughbred racing. The season culminates with the All American Futurity Labor Day weekend. There are plenty of golf courses to challenge to golfer. Close to the cabin are the Links at Sierra Blanca and the older Cree Meadows. Two of the best courses in New Mexico are the resorts at Rainmakers and the Inn of the Mountain Gods both of which allow day play. Pickle ball is huge in Ruidoso. Play starts at 9:00 at the courts adjacent to the Links golf course. All guests are welcome and they even have paddles you can borrow. Of course the big winter attraction of Ruidoso is the skiing/riding at Ski Apache. If you're not a skier or boarder at the base of Ski Run Rd is a great tubing park.
