The 'lady of the house' works from home as a ceramic artist, and as such, is available for your questions at any time.

Waimea is the perfect town. No, really, it is. It's country, yet cosmopolitan, located smack-dab in the middle of one of the largest privately owned cattle ranches anywhere, home to the headquarters of W.M. Keck Observatory, the most scientifically productive telescopes in the world, filled to overflowing with luscious, farm fresh produce (and farmer's markets) that supply the farm-to-table restaurants Merriman's, Red Water Cafe, Village Burger to name just a few, add to that the top-notch cultural hub of the Kahilu Theatre and don't forget that everything is within walking distance, what more could you possibly ask for?

Watch the video: search for KITV News online, once there, search for 'where you live: Waimea' and watch the video! (apologies, but VRBO won't let me post a link)

On the Big Island, you'll absolutely need to rent a car to get around.

No smoking. No pets. Please observe quiet hours between 9 pm & 6 am.

About Zoe Johnson

Hi! Thanks for stopping by.

We have lived on the Big Island for 12+ years. We love the outdoor lifestyle, hiking, swimming, kayaking & snorkeling as often as we can. In our humble opinion, Kamuela is an absolute gem of a town, the very best place on the Big Island to live. We love the central location for ease of access to both sides of this amazing place, and can't wait to share some of the greatest insider tips with you!

Guestbook comments from the owner

The suite is beautiful! Brand new and so many thoughtful touches. Beautiful finishings throughout. Loved having two bathrooms for our family of 4, as well as a washer and dryer to use after we we caught in a mid-day shower. The location is great just 1-3 minutes to all of the shops & restaurants in Waimea. We visited two farmers markets on Saturday and the kitchenette was prefect for preparing our dinner and breakfast. The king bed was so comfortable with nice linens and so was the sofabed. The location was quiet and Zoe and Scott were easy to reach by text on our day of arrival and departure. The directions to the home and to access the suite were easy to follow. We didn't need to contact them at all during our stay as the suite had everything we could have asked for! Highly recommend this suite for those coming to explore this part of the Big Island.

Island hospitality and comfort

  • 5 of 5

We loved staying at Ginger Garden Hale. The rental is well stocked with everything you could need for island adventures and is located close to some amazing sights. We had a great night's sleep each night. Having two bathrooms is really convenient too, even if you're just a couple.

Perfect Kamuela property and location

  • 5 of 5

Ginger Garden Hale is perfectly located in Kamuela. It's close to restaurants, shopping, grocery stores and the beaches of the Kohala Coast. We were there to check our son into Hawaii Preparatory Academy which is also just down the street so it made getting back and forth to campus a breeze.

The unit was fresh and clean and had everything we needed for our stay. While we did little cooking the kitchen was adequately stocked to prepare almost any meal. Having 2 bathrooms made it very convenient for our family of 4 although the pull out sofa bed was a tad too little for our teenage boys. Nevertheless, we would definitely stay here again.

Many thanks to Zoe for a most warm and hospitable stay!

All Amenities Included and Exactly as Advertised

  • 5 of 5

What else can you say about a vacation rental that has everything you could possibly need for a clean and comfortable lodging? Excellent!

First, location is everything, and it's only few minutes driving time from Waimea (Kamuela) town and within reasonable walking distance (about one mile) for a morning or evening stroll.

Second, the apartment is a renovated portion of the main house with a private entrance and was reconstructed with premium materials, plus the floorplan allows two distinct living areas each with it's own bathroom/shower stall. For a couple or couple with kids this is a big plus.

Cooking is limited to a twin burner electric stove and professional microwave oven inside, but the gas grill is just outside, however with the abundance of culinary attractions in town I'd recommend visitors let someone else do the cooking and dine out.

Last, my visit was business related, and coincidentally Zoe and Scott were off island. Nephew Jake was available however, and I'd say for vacation travelers, especially first-time visitors to the Big Island this would be the ideal "go to" destination and would rate return visits for sure.

For those who desire resort-like accommodations this might not fit the billet, and be prepared to spend at least twice if not three times the daily rate here for a hotel room in the overcrowded man-made "paradise" down on the South Kohala or Kailua-Kona Coast. This is upcountry living at it's finest and the reason locals and long-time residents call North Kohala "God's Country". Aloha E Komo Mai.

Cute little apartment

  • 4 of 5

It was a well kept and private apartment. It can be a bit noisy if the owners have company because the walls are thin. The owners were thoughtful and their guests were quiet after 9.

Owner's Response: Aloha Colleen, Thank you so much for your kind review of the Ginger Garden Hale! Your positive feedback truly means the world to our little rental business, and we're deeply sorry for any inconvenience you may have experienced due to noise! We have since taken steps to further insulate our adjoining wall against any future carryover, and thank you wholeheartedly for alerting us to this issue. We're absolutely delighted you enjoyed your stay as much as we enjoyed having you as our guest. With warm Aloha, Zoe & Scott
