The 'lady of the house' works from home as a ceramic artist, and as such, is available for your questions at any time.

Waimea is the perfect town. No, really, it is. It's country, yet cosmopolitan, located smack-dab in the middle of one of the largest privately owned cattle ranches anywhere, home to the headquarters of W.M. Keck Observatory, the most scientifically productive telescopes in the world, filled to overflowing with luscious, farm fresh produce (and farmer's markets) that supply the farm-to-table restaurants Merriman's, Red Water Cafe, Village Burger to name just a few, add to that the top-notch cultural hub of the Kahilu Theatre and don't forget that everything is within walking distance, what more could you possibly ask for?

Watch the video: search for KITV News online, once there, search for 'where you live: Waimea' and watch the video! (apologies, but VRBO won't let me post a link)

On the Big Island, you'll absolutely need to rent a car to get around.

No smoking. No pets. Please observe quiet hours between 9 pm & 6 am.

About Zoe Johnson

Hi! Thanks for stopping by.

We have lived on the Big Island for 15+ years. We love the outdoor lifestyle, hiking, swimming, kayaking & snorkeling as often as we can. In our humble opinion, Kamuela is an absolute gem of a town, the very best place on the Big Island to live. We love the central location for ease of access to both sides of this amazing place, and can't wait to share some of the greatest insider tips with you!

Guestbook comments from the owner

The suite is beautiful! Brand new and so many thoughtful touches. Beautiful finishings throughout. Loved having two bathrooms for our family of 4, as well as a washer and dryer to use after we we caught in a mid-day shower. The location is great just 1-3 minutes to all of the shops & restaurants in Waimea. We visited two farmers markets on Saturday and the kitchenette was prefect for preparing our dinner and breakfast. The king bed was so comfortable with nice linens and so was the sofabed. The location was quiet and Zoe and Scott were easy to reach by text on our day of arrival and departure. The directions to the home and to access the suite were easy to follow. We didn't need to contact them at all during our stay as the suite had everything we could have asked for! Highly recommend this suite for those coming to explore this part of the Big Island.

Great place to stay and wonderful, attentive hosts

  • 5 of 5

This is a wonderful place to stay. The apartment is spacious, the kitchen is great and the ginger garden was very impressive. Great place for business trips or vacation. Very private and off the beaten path but close to the beaches, state parks, and shopping. Zoe and Scott made everything easy and were wonderful hosts. It was a great visit.

Great Place - Perfect location!

  • 5 of 5

Scott and Zoe were wonderful hosts....they gave great suggestions about what to do and how far things were. Kamuela is a central location on the Big Island - Hapuna Beach is mere minutes away, you can see the Observatory in the distance, and Hilo isn't far. The unit was very comfortable & having 2 bathrooms was convenient. There's a great choice of books to read if you're inclined & the beach toys were very handy! We'd stay there again if we find ourselves on the Big Island!!

Greatest little Ohana ever!

  • 5 of 5

We started our Big Island vacation at the beautiful Ohana of Zoe and Scott. The directions were excellent, location was just where we wanted, up the hill where it is a little cooler and closer to local restaurants and shopping but easier zip down to the best beaches on the island. The condo had every thing you could ask for. A one bedroom with 2 baths (and showers) was a luxury. We found the towels, snorkel gear and guide books we needed and were happy to find a few condiments, coffee and what we needed to make ourselves at home. The Wifi worked great, the bed was warm and comfy. I would come back anytime. Mahalo for your hospitality.

Beautiful Getaway!

  • 5 of 5

The apartment was so clean and spacious. Very well-appointed and located in a quiet neighborhood that has great mountain and sunset views. Although attached to the owner's home, it was very private. We enjoyed our stay and look forward to visiting again!

Island hospitality and comfort

  • 5 of 5

We loved staying at Ginger Garden Hale. The rental is well stocked with everything you could need for island adventures and is located close to some amazing sights. We had a great night's sleep each night. Having two bathrooms is really convenient too, even if you're just a couple.

Perfect Kamuela property and location

  • 5 of 5

Ginger Garden Hale is perfectly located in Kamuela. It's close to restaurants, shopping, grocery stores and the beaches of the Kohala Coast. We were there to check our son into Hawaii Preparatory Academy which is also just down the street so it made getting back and forth to campus a breeze.

The unit was fresh and clean and had everything we needed for our stay. While we did little cooking the kitchen was adequately stocked to prepare almost any meal. Having 2 bathrooms made it very convenient for our family of 4 although the pull out sofa bed was a tad too little for our teenage boys. Nevertheless, we would definitely stay here again.

Many thanks to Zoe for a most warm and hospitable stay!
