Overview

About the property

Quiet and secluded 3-bedroom beach cottage, walking distance to Cape Cod Bay.

Lodged in the nostalgic, grassy beach neighborhood of Lower Road right off Cape Cod Bay, this little cottage is a 10-minute walk to the beach. This part of the Cape is about as sweet and quiet as it was 20 years ago. While there are, of course, the big beach houses as you get closer to the water, this neighborhood and the town of Brewster haven't had the same build-up and ostentatious or over the top wealth that you'll find on other parts of Cape Cod. Brewster was established in 1803, and this neighborhood is less than a mile from the historic buildings built by sea captains in the 1800's, including The Brewster Ladies Library and The Brewster Store, both a short bike ride from the cottage.

The Cottage -

The property is surrounded by conservation land and is a quiet 10-minute walk to the beach (we clocked that with a glass of wine and a dog on a leash). The house has a secluded backyard that backs on to conservation land, an old-fashioned wooden swing, a rocking chair, big shady trees, hydrangea bushes, wild grape vines, daylilies, lots of grass for badminton, and a deck with outdoor seating for coffee or dinner, or to watch the fireflies reign over the yard in July. There is an outdoor shower for post-beach afternoons and warm summer mornings.

Fried seafood, ice cream and a liquor store are each less than .8 miles down the road. Brewster's shorelines have many bay beaches, and while the closest walk is Saint's Landing, you'll find Mants, Paine's Creek and others a short distance away too. It's not uncommon to see fox, rabbits and other wildlife around. In the the morning, you'll certainly hear the songbirds if you take your coffee or tea to the deck or back stoop. Diagonally across the street is Brewster's old cemetery which is worth a visit to see old sea captain's burial sites dating back to Brewster's first settlers.

Indoors is cozy and sweet. An small but open floor plan includes a living room with sofa and sitting chair, books and puzzles and a TV for rainy days. An AC unit for the main room is available for the hottest days. The farm-style kitchen and dining area are adjacent and seat up to 8 for dinner. You'll find what you need to prepare meals including a coffee maker, toaster and microwave. An old sideboard that doubles as a work island always looks and feels great with flowers and summer fruit and berries.

A half bathroom and back entryway have a washing machine and dryer. Right off the back entrance is a clothesline for laundry to dry in the sun.

The back of the cottage has 3 bedrooms, none very big but all very sweet. There is a master bedroom with (1) queen bed, a back bedroom with (1) full bed, and a front bedroom with (2) twin beds. The master bedroom gets a nice little cross breeze. We have fans if you need them plus an AC unit in the master bedroom for hot summer nights. The master bedroom and back bedroom have closet space and hangers, the twin bedroom has plenty of bureau and shelf space. The cottage is winterized, so if you are here off-season or have a cold night, there is a thermostat to control the heat.

Things to Bring With You and What We Have:

Yes, we have wifi and basic cable.

Linens (sheets and bath towels) are included in July and August rentals. All other rentals have linens available for an additional cost. We have blankets and pillows (all new) for the beds.

We provide beach towels and ask guests to launder these and put them away before they depart. (Please don't use the white bath towels at the beach).

We have the basics for what you need in the kitchen. No big electric mixer if you plan on baking, but a handheld usually does the trick. You don't need to bring things like dishes, pots, pans, or serving stuff. We have plenty of wine and water glasses, and some plastic ware for outdoors or beach drinks.

We have a hair dryer in the bathroom and iron and ironing board stored in the laundry cove available for use.

For the beach, we a few beach chairs and an umbrella, so no need to pack those if your car is getting full.

If you do rent the cottage, we will send you a digital guide that should answer most questions about the cottage, the neighborhood as well as some tips for best spots both nearby and a little farther down Cape if you're up for it.

The Brewster Store is just under a mile from the cottage and has most provisions you might have forgotten, not to mention some of the cutest souvenirs and best donuts, pastries and penny candy.

The Lower Cape:

We are biased, but this part of the Cape is the best part. With the bay beaches in Brewster to the National Seashore and Town ocean beaches in Orleans, Eastham, Wellfleet, Truro and Provincetown you're not far from some of the country's prettiest spots. If you like shopping and arts, we have great galleries, antique stores and boutiques, too. Chatham, Orleans and Wellfleet all have great little Main Street street areas for shopping days, and The Lemon Tree Village in Brewster is right around the corner from the cottage.

The Lower Cape is great for biking. If you're up for a longer ride, The Cape Cod Rail Trail will get you by bicycle all the way to Provincetown, with great coffee, sandwich and beach stops along the way. The Brewster trail entrances are just a few miles from the cottage.

There are great restaurants, sandwich and coffee shops, golf, beaches, ponds, hiking trails, The Museum of Natural History (amazing walking trails and just down the street from the cottage) and Nickerson State Park all nearby.

Please let us know of questions and we hope you'll consider your vacation at our cottage, Featherwinds!

About Liz Shook

I was born and raised on Cape Cod as a year-round resident right in Brewster. My parent's house is just 1.5 miles from this cottage, and they help manage it when I'm traveling. My fiance and I live in Ethiopia where he works for the UN, though I travel to the US frequently as a freelance producer and we get to the Cape and to Montana where his family lives as often as we can.

Why Liz Shook chose Cape Cod

This property is right for families or small groups of friends who are ok with a small house and like being in a quiet, pretty neighborhood close to the beach.

Great little beach cottage!

  • 5 of 5

This was our second stay in this cottage and it was every bit as enjoyable as the first time. It's a simple but darling little house in a great part of the Cape. Can't wait till our stay next year!

Perfect location and comfortable cottage

  • 5 of 5

Thank you Liz for letting my family stay at your beach cottage. We had a great time. The cottage was clean and cozy. You were a pleasure to deal with and always responsive and accommodating. The cottage had a great backyard for coffee in the morning or relaxing after a long day at the beach. Our son loved the tree swing in the backyard. The house was very convenient to access all the local shops and restaurants and within a short walk to the beach. We didn't bother getting a beach pass because we could walk right down to Saint's Landing. I would definitely recommend your home to friends or family. Thanks again!

Excellent Cape Cod retreat

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed our week's stay in June 2016. The cottage is an easy 10 minute walk to a Bay side beach which is particularly excellent for toddlers and young children, and offers great sunsets! The cottage had all the amenities we needed and many thoughtful touches. The Brewster area has much to offer, and being mid-Cape it is a perfect location for exploring, and very near the Cape Cod Rail Trail. We plan to return next year with our grand-daughter. Definitely recommend this spot.

Exactly as I pictured a Cape Cod Cottage

  • 5 of 5

The cottage was clean, well equipped, and very charming. It felt very comfortable and relaxing and private. The hammock was a great spot, as was the outdoor deck for grilling. Very nice grill. The beds were very comfortable and the kitchen space was open and worked well for cooking with a couple of people. We really appreciated the owner's guidebook that included great recommendations for beaches, food, and sights. We think Brewster is an ideal place on the Cape! We found the closest beach a reasonable walk (used a wagon to cart our toddler and stuff). The cottage road and surrounding roads are relatively busy, however, so one needs to be careful walking and you cannot really bike anywhere with kids. We highly recommend this cottage for its location and comfort--we had a full house but were never cramped. Also so nice that it was small-dog friendly.

Cute, well equiped cottage in a great location

  • 5 of 5

Our stay at this cute cottage was just what we needed -- a quiet, peaceful location to get away from the city grind for a long weekend. We shared the cottage with another couple and their 16 mo, and the place didn't feel small or cramped. The cottage is well equipped with pretty much anything you could possibly need while staying in Brewster, and there are plenty of shops close by for anything else you might need. The kitchen is well stocked with pots and pans -- there is even a lobster steam pot! The furnishings are very comfortable, and, if you enjoy the sounds of nature, the chirping birds each morning add a certain amount of charm. The cottage looks exactly as it does in the photos, inside and out. The grounds are extremely well maintained and the deck is a great place for breakfast in the morning or an al fresco dinner.

The cottage is close to quite a few shops, restaurants and art galleries. I would definitely recommend making a stop at the Brewster Store and Kate's Fried Seafood and Ice Cream for a scoop. The beach is very close by and well maintained. It's not the easiest place to walk around as there are very few sidewalks and lots of blind corners on heavy tree-lined streets, but if you have a car almost everything is within a very short drive.
