Overview

About the property

1+ Bedroom House, Full Bath and Kitchen, Sleeps 4, Small Dogs and Kids Welcome.

Beautiful 1+ bedroom house (solarium easily converts to bedroom) with full kitchen, spacious living room, and play/dining area on 2.5 acre private, wooded property with giant open lawn. A stones throw from civilization so you can get away from it all, or venture out right into it all from your super chill country home. This house has been in my family for 50 years. It's well-taken care of, nicely furnished, and located literally 300 feet off of any road. Giant bay windows abound looking out on nature and the night sky. The stone-faced wood-burning fireplace adds another dimension to chilly late-fall or winter nights. You'll think you're in the middle of nowhere unless you need something; and then you'll be right next to whatever you seek. We have an outdoor patio with a picnic table, plus another table and chairs out in the meadow. Our lawn is massive and perfect for outdoor fun including frisbee, catch, croquet, volleyball, badminton...whatever strikes your fancy. Best of all, we're only an hour to an hour and 10 minutes from Manhattan. That's a real hour folks...not gee-if-only-traffic-didn't-exist timing. We're also close to Ronkonkoma train station so your non-driving friends can easily come out to join you for the weekend.

In addition to all those windows, we have air-conditioning and fans. The main bedroom is huge, as is the solarium (named that because of its 14 windows) which serves us as a second bedroom and is easily convertible. Perfect for a family or couples with or without visiting friends, though a solitary writer might also think he'd dropped into Heaven.

You can easily barbecue and eat out on the porch, or anywhere in the backyard. Take a look at a googlemaps picture and you'll see how the house is perfectly set back from the road.

Nearby Corey Beach is ideal for kids. Shallow bay water, a playground on the sand, and local fixture Flo's Luncheonette serving up yummy food. For the ocean beach experience, Smith Point on Fire Island is a 15 minute drive away. Otherwise, the Pines, Cherry Grove, Watch Hill and Davis Park ferries are 15 minute drives into town.

About Natalie Picoe

We are a family of 4 and currently live in Hudson County in N.J. Before that my wife and I both lived in NYC for 20 years. This house has been our refuge and we love it. It's rustic and relaxing and we hope you enjoy it as much as we do.

Natalie Picoe purchased this chateau / country house in 1950

Why Natalie Picoe chose New York

My great-aunt and uncle bought the house before the Long Island Expressway even reached out this way. It's bucolic and quiet, but still close to tons of fun amenities. I fell in love with the house as a child because the property felt like Tom Sawyer could live there. Later, when I became a writer, it provided the perfect redoubt for concentrated work. Still later, when I began raising a family I found out just how many wonderful and fun things there were to do nearby. Our kids either play in the yard, or we take them to the beach, the pool, or the water park.

What makes this chateau / country house unique

In the 20 years since the house became mine, not once has a visitor come without saying some version of 'wow...I can't believe there's a house back here. I never knew.' It's really one of a kind. We rarely take vacations because weekends at the house, when it is not rented out, are like vacations in themselves.

Notes:
Our property is an old house in the woods. It's gorgeous but rustic. One of my favorite things to do is just sitting on the couch reading a book and looking at the trees in the back yard.

Great get away, especially with kids

  • 5 of 5

We really enjoyed our stay! Tucked away and surrounded by trees, it was the perfect little get-away-from-it-all house. Everything was clean and the host was prompt to reply to our questions and needs. The yard is wonderful for kids to play and explore. Hope to get back there again soon.

Private property away from the busy road with big yard ideal for my family

  • 5 of 5

This was a great property to use for my family with two toddlers. There was a big yard, kid toys in the yard and in the house, and they could be as loud as they wanted. The owners were very easy to work with. The house was very clean and has an old fashion rustic feel to it.

Fun and relaxing, especially with little ones

  • 5 of 5

I originally choose this location because a.) it seemed like enough space for my twin toddlers boys to run around and be toddlers without feeling like we were ruining someone elses vacation and b.) it was close enough to nearby beaches and other activities in case we got bored. We actually never made it to the beach! They boys gravitated to all of great toys and open space to run around in and my husband and I enjoyed sitting back and watching them play. It was just rustic enough for us city-folk and close to tons stores for last minute items to grill (and, of course, wine!). As someone else mentioned, it's not luxury but comfortable with cute little features and everything you need to relax.

Our house and property are ensconsed in 2.5 acres of gorgeous woods but just down our driveway civilization awaits. Down the street is a beautiful public park, the Holtsville Ecology Center, featuring playgrounds for kids, a running/biking track, a very well-regarded petting zoo (rescue animals only), and an enormous public swimming pool as well as an 18' deep kiddie pool for the tiny ones. We are a 15 minute drive from Davis Park, Watch Hill, Cherry Grove and the Pines ferries to Fire Island. Ten minutes away from Patchogue, a truly resurgent town filled with great places to eat (trust us, we're picky), an arthouse movie theater, a theater and a library right downtown. Our house is located in a wooded area close to the Davis Park and Sayville Ferry stops. We are close to Bellport too. We love riding our bike down the dirt path to the ecology center and going swimming in the local pool. There's great bike riding in the area, and of course easily reachable and awesome bay and ocean beaches (Corey Beach for kids, Smith Point/Mastic Beach). There's a great public golf course just down the road in Holbrook, there's a nearby amusement park for kids (Boomers), and walking distance away the hamlet of Holtsville has a bagel shop, chinese food, a comic book store, and a pizzeria. Our property is large and open enough for volleyball, frisbee, or croquet. We love to just hop on our bikes and explore.

If shopping is your thing the Smithtown Mall is a 15 minute drive and has top line retail.
