Situated at the 3,500 foot elevation on the tree-lined eastern slope of Kilauea Volcano, Mohala Na Pua has the unique vantage point of proximity to the Volcano National Park, a view of majestic Mauna Kea Volcano in the distance, and an uncluttered, sunny aerie just a few steps from the dappled shade of native ohi'a trees and giant hapu'u tree ferns. The residence, like a family, "is a place where minds come into contact with one another. If these minds love one another, the home will be as beautiful as a flower garden..." -
It is evident that the significance of family and Buddha's flower garden are woven into the fabric of Mohala Na Pua , which means literally 'the blossoming flowers;" also a reference to a child shinning forth, a thought freely evolving, a heart unfolding. It is meant to be a place of relaxation and simplicity, providing ease from the daily stress in our lives with the powerful energy of active Halema'uma'u Crater nearby, and the expansive desert of lava fields that pay tribute to flows of past years.
The bright and airy upstairs has two sun-filled bedrooms, a bathroom, living room, full kitchen and dining area. Downstairs is an expansive 'ohana (gathering area/famiy room) with a spacious adjoining master bedroom and bath and access to a private patio facing the delightful jungle of a back yard.
This villa has all the modern convenience of a turnkey destination including washer - dryer, all imaginable kitchen appliances, two flat screens with DVD players and full cable, free Wi-Fi, and a bangin', easy to operate, one button fireplace. Also a bathtub for soaking. The sprawling grounds are a botanical garden in progress, the work of the owners to restore the native foliage while integrating the introduced flowers that Hawai'i is noted for.
E komo mai i ko'u mau hale. Come and visit our home in Volcano. Within 5 minutes of the Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park, we are also just 3 minutes from the relaxed Volcano Village and its restaurants, convenience stores, and the Volcano Art Center. We hope your stay with us provides you with the relaxation and enjoyment of our mountain retreat.
Herb and Nona were both born and raised in Hawai'i; Nona from Honolulu and Herb from Moloka'i. Both are part native Hawai'ian and both have family roots on the island of Hawai'i. They live in Volcano Village after moving here from O'ahu 14 years ago. Herb is a counselor at Kamehameha schools and Nona is the assistant administrator/director of nursing at a small rural hospital in Ka'u. Both are steeped in their culture and this land and love to share their knowledge with anyone interested. Neither will come check on you during your stay unless for some reason you specifically request their presence.
Nona B. Wilson purchased this chateau / country house in 2007
This property was purchased for their son and his family a few years ago. When things did not work out and their son moved back to O'ahu for work, Nona and Herb started working in the yard and on the house. They intended at the time to offer it for sale. Many friends assisted them in this effort and feelings of aloha grew for the house and the area surrounding it. It has become something very special to us and we want to share it with others. Our hope is that everyone who stays at Mohala shares our feelings for this very special place, our wahi pana.
The villa although large has a cozy feel to it. The views from the upstairs living area into the ohi'a trees and hapu'u with Mauna Kea in the distance are truly amazing. Although close to the highway leading to the park, Volcano Village and points beyond, and located in a residential area, there is a lot of privacy. Sitting on the back patio off the master bedroom, you look out at a broad expanse of tropical rainforest. We love it.
Thank you for sharing your lovely home, advice and aloha with us! We enjoyed our stay immensely! We would love to stay here when we return to the Big Island.
Nona met us at the house when we arrived and showed us where everything was. The house was clean and well organized. The beds are slightly older and one of the big beds was twins pushed together and they made a crinkly noise when you slept on them. The only source of heat is the lovely gas stove upstairs, so we spent most of our time there. The kitchen had all of the necessary pots and pans for cooking, and we were able to bring our Chromecast to use on the TV to watch Christmas movies. If we had any questions, Nona was always ready to pick up the phone.
Great location just minutes away from Volcano National Park. Huge master bedroom downstairs. Perfect for a large family of 8. Cozy fireplace upstairs. Cute nook below the stairs for the little ones to play in. Beautiful Christmas decorations. Very quiet neighborhood. Property was very clean and had everything listed. We had the pleasure of meeting the owner Nona. She shared several insights about the Volcano National Park with us. Would definitely stay here again when we visit Big Island.
It's hard to say more than the other reviewers - we, too, found the home immaculately clean with everything one could need. Umbrellas, great assortment of kitchen utensils, full size washer/dryer, etc. It was rainy when we visited, or we would have spent time in Nona's beautiful patio and gardens, both front and back. We were very close to the entrance to the Volcanos National Park and it was easy to return in the evening to view the glow from the caldera. The home is just off the main highway, approximately 1 mile east of the town of Volcano and 2 miles east of the park entrance.
Although we mostly ate at the home, we did (as other reviewers did) enjoy a take out lunch from the Tuk Tuk Thai food truck. Nona was a gracious hostess and met us upon arrival to be sure we had all we needed, and to show us around the home. We appreciated the diligence about recycling and composting. All-in-all, we had a cozy and convenient stay and I highly recommend that you consider this home for your visit!
This was our favorite place in Hawaii, both the house and the location! We were a group of 3 adults and 4 children under the age 3 (!). Nona was so kind and welcoming, she really went out of her way to make her house kid friendly. There was a pack-n-play, high chair, baby gate for the stairs, break-proof dishes, outlet covers, and fresh, local fruit (big hit when we arrived hungry). The house would also be perfect for several couples traveling together or families with older kids/teens. It is very tastefully and comfortably decorated. There's a master suite and living room (with laundry closet!) on the first floor, the second floor has two bedrooms and a shared bath, second living room and kitchen. The house is very well equipped - kitchen has just about everything you could need, laundry with detergent provided, there are plenty of towels, some beach supplies, and a binder of local information. And compost! I always hate tossing compostable stuff when on vacation.
We loved the area, the cool weather was so welcome after the heat of Oahu and Kona. The volcano was very active when we were there, we could see lava spattering! The lava tube hike was great for kids, our volcano obsessed two year olds really enjoyed it. The black sand beach was great too - there were some protected pools perfect for little kids to splash around and we saw two turtles on the beach and one swimming! We recommend the Volcano House restaurant for a full breakfast (buffet, young kids free, can't beat the view), Tuk Tuk food truck for lunch/early dinner (good Thai food, friendly service, reasonable price for the area), and the bar/lounge restaurant at Volcano House for dinner (more casual than the restaurant, friendly service, kids menu, beer, great view).
Thank you Nona for a great end to our Hawaii vacation!
We had a really pleasant stay at Nona's villa. It was the perfect place to base ourselves while we explored the area. We hired a car and drove from Hilo. We called Nona when we were close and she met us there to show us around. She provided us with local fruit, bread and coffee which were greatly appreciated. There were even fresh flowers to welcome us. Nona gave us some great suggestions for restaurants and places we should visit. The spacious house had everything we needed and more and it was spotlessly clean. There is a full kitchen, laundry, umbrellas, board games, books, a study area and even blankets and a wood fire for the cooler weather. Our only disappointment was that we didn't stay another night to enjoy this wonderful house and gardens. We would highly recommend this villa to anyone visiting the Volcano area.
I had only heard of Volcano and came so unprepared because I did not know what to expect from the tropical jungle paradise. First of all, bring a sweater because it could go from lava hot to sparkling rain in the blink of an eye. Luckily Nona saved the day by lending me warmer clothing😬Photos don't do the place justice. It could be anything from the perfect headquarters for a family reunion or a romantic couple's hideaway. I won't tell you what it was for me😜 I really enjoyed being able to prepare all meals with modern conveniences, watch my favorite television shows, sit by the fire, and soak in the tub which has natural purified water from this artsy mountain retreat.
Mohala na pua is only 5 min away from the entrance to Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park. Here you can view amazingly breathtaking lava flows, hike thru spectacularly beautiful native forests, and view alluring native birds. A few minutes away is the inviting Punalu'u Black Sand Beach, the tempting volcano winery, and scenic volcano golf course. Volcano Village with its delicious restaurants, quaint art galleries, general stores, and a couple of gas stations is minutes away. Cooper Center in the village has a calendar of activities and a farmer's market on Sundays.
